SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,766, dated January 13, 1885.

Be it known that I, BARTI-IOLOMY WILHELM, of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved Corkscrew, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved corkscrew which is provided with a socket adapted to receive and fit on bottle-heads of different sizes.

The invention consists in the combination, with a corkscrew, of two loose prongs between which the screw is adapted to revolve, and of a sliding ring surrounding the prongs and serving to hold their lower ends a greater or less distance apart, according to the size of the head of the bottle.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved corkscrew. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line as m, Fig." 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the under side of the corkscrew.

The corkscrew A is provided with a crosshandle, B, in the usual manner, and directly below the handle a cone-shaped part, 0, is mounted rigidly on the stem of the screw and in the handle, and this piece 0 is provided in its bottom or larger end surface with an annular or circular groove, D, into which semicircular tongues E pass, which are formed on the upper ends of beveled or slightly-curved prongs F, which are provided in the inner edges with offsets or shoulders G, which rest upon a flat ring, H, held to turn loosely on the lower end of the stem of the screw and at the upper end of the screw proper. Shoulders J are formed on the inner surfaces of the I prongs F at the lower ends. A band or fiat ring, K, surrounds the upper parts of the prongs and fits quite closely on the same.

The corkscrew is used in the following manner: It is screwed into the cork to be drawn until it has a firm grip. The prongs F are adjusted to fit on the head of the bottle, and then the screw is turned,and as the screw cannot move downit compels the cork to move up. By moving the ring K downward the lower ends of the prongs F are brought together, and thus adjusted for small bottles. If the ring K is brought or moved upward, the lower ends of the prongs F can be spread to fit the heads of large bottles.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The corkscrew having the prongs loosely connected and adjustable thereon, said prongs being adapted to rest upon the bottle-neck, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with a corkscrew, of prongs held loosely on the same, and of a sliding ring on the prongs, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with a corkscrew, of the fixed part 0, having a circular groove in its bottom, the prongs F, having tongues E at their upper ends, and of the ring K, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. The combination, with the corkscrew A, of the flat ring H, the tapered part 0, having a groove in its lower end, the prongs F, having tongues E and internal shoulders, G, and of the sliding ring K, substantially as herein shown and described.
