Beit known that we, CHARLES A. DIES and REINHOLD LUNDGREN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in EX- panding Brings or Stoppers; and we do hereby declare J[he following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. f
The present invention relates to that type of expanding bungs or stoppers for barrels and other like vessels in which an annular elastic packing is spread or expanded within the bung or other hole to effect a tight closure of the same.
The principal object of the present improvement is to provide a simple, durable, and effective construction and arrangement of parts in which the elastic packing-sleeve of a cylindrical form is expanded in an even man-- ner, so as to have a uniform closure action on its peripheral surface.
Other objects of the present improvement are to provide a compaot'and non-projecting arrangement of parts, means for the ready operation and removal of the bungor stopper, and means to prevent entire disengagement of the bung parts, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims.

l Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the lower member of the bung, having a. cone shaped marginal portion 2 and a plane central'portion 3, to which the screw-threaded stud 4 is centrally secured in a rigid and substantial manner either by forming an integral part thereof or by being riveted thereto, as shown in the drawings, in which the said lower bung portion is shown as formed by a stamping of sheet metal.
5 is the upper member of the bung, which in the present improvement is formed with an inverted-cone-shaped portion 6, counterpart to the cone-shaped portion 2 of the lower member, a depressed central web portion 7, having a non-circular central orifice 8, that fits over the screw-threaded stud 4, having a corresponding non-circular formation, so that the upper member will be capable of vertical movement with relation to said stud, but incapable of independent rotary movement in ahorizontal plane, and an outer marginal portion 9 ofa greater diameter than the bunghole, so as to constitute a stop to limit the insertion of the bung into the bung hole or oritice. This marginal portion 9 may be dispensed with in some cases without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
10 is a nut screwing upon the stud Liabove the web 7 of the upper member 5, as shown. In the present improvement this nutis formed with laterally-projecting lugs 11 at or near its upper end, as shown, and which aords means for rotating the nut by means of the special wrench or key hereinafter described.
lVith the construction of the upper member 5 as shown and described a central lopentopped chamber is formed that receives the stud 4 and operating-nut 10, so that the same will have an arrangement wholly below the top surface of the bung,` and this feature is a material point of the present invention.
12 is the elastic packing-sleeve of the present invention, having an annular cylindrical form, as shown.
13 is a spirit ring fitting the interior of the elastic sleeve 12, with its ends engaging the respective coned formations of the'upper and lower .bung members 1 and 5, as shown, and in the present construction the split 14 in the Ico said ring will have an oblique arrangement. (See Fig. l.)
The nut l is connected to the stud 4, so as to be capable of but a limited longitudinal travel thereon in order to prevent entire disengagement between the parts, by the following means: 15 is a washer secured to the upper end of the screw-threaded stud 4, which Washer is adapted to have movement in an open-topped counterbore 16 in the nut 10, as shown in Fig. 1.
The Wrench or key for applying or disengaging the bung is illustrated in Fig. and Will comprise a handled shank 18 and a cylindrical head 18, formed with a bore adapted to fit over the circular sides of the nut 10, one or more vertical slits 19 to pass over the lateral lugs 11 of said nut, and an upper horizontal extension 2O of said slits to receive the said lugs, the arrangement being such that in the operation of unscrewing the nut the horizontal portion of the said slits will engage beneath the lateral lugs 1l to afford a means to Withdraw the bung from its position in the bung hole or orifice.
With the present construction the split ring receives the expanding action of the upper and lower cones in a direct manner at its respective top and bottom ends and in turn imparts such expansion to the elastic packing-sleeve in an even and uniform manner the Whole length of said packing-sleeve, and in consequence a very tight and' substantial closure is effected.
Having thus fully described our said invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an expanding bung or stopper, the combination of the lower member formed with a coned portion, a screw-threaded stud carried by said lower member, the u-pper member formed with an inverted coned portion, an annular cylindrical packing-sleeve, a split ring arranged within said sleeve, with its respective ends engaging the coned portions of the members, and a nut screwing upon the screw-threaded stud, substantially as set forth.
2. In an expanding bung or stopper, the combination of the lower member formed with a coned portion, a screw-threaded stud carried by said lower member, the upper member formed with an inverted coned portion and a central sunken web forming an opentopped chamber in said member, an annular cylindrical packing-sleeve, a split ring arranged Within said sleeve with its respective ends engaging the coned portions of the members, and a nut screwing upon the screwthreaded stud, the nut and stud being ar ranged in the openatopped chamber of the up per member, substantially as set forth.
3. In an expanding bung or stopper, 'the combination of the lower member formed with a coned portion, a screw-threaded stud car ried by said lower member, the upper member formed with an inverted coned portion, an annular cylindrical packing-sleeve, a split ring arranged within said sleeve with its respective ends engaging the coned portions of the members, and a nut screwing upon the screw-threaded stud, and provided with lateral studs near its upper end substantially as set forth. o
4. In an expanding bung or stopper essentially as herein described, the combination With the upper and lower members, a fixed screw-threaded stud, ofthe nut formed with an open-topped counterbore, and a Washer secured to the upper end of the stud and having vertical movement in said counterbore, substantially as set forth.
