BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2, 1908.
Application filed June 12, 1907. Serial No. 378,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs O. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United .States, residing at WVashington city, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottles of that class in which a hard metal collar adapted to receive a closure device, is secured in permanent air and gas-tight relation with the neck as shown and described in Letters Patents granted to me April 3, 1906, and March 5, 1907, numbered respectively 818,033, and 846,177, and particularly to that type illustrated and described in a copending applica tion filed by me the 12th day of June 1907, Serial No. 378,543, in which is shown and described a sheet metal closure device adapted to be located within the inner wall of the hard metal collar, which closure device is formed with its lower end open, and the 0pposite end closed by an integral head.
My present invention has for its object to so arrange the inner wall of the hard metal collar that greater resistance will be offered to the withdrawal of the closure device after it has been secured within the collar, and to so construct the closure device that its wall may be not only more readily forced into close contact with the hard metal collar, but that it shall also be heldagainst vertical movement within the hard metal collar while pressure is being applied to force its wall outwardly.
With these objects and ends in view my invention consists in so locating the hard metal collar upon the neck of the bottle that the inner wall thereof shall be of less diameter at its upper extremity than at its lower end thus producing an annular converging shoulder.
My invention consists further in forming the metal closure device with a closed bottom and open upper end with an annular flange, constituting a means by which the closure device may be withdrawn, and with an annular shoulder intermediate the upper and lower extremities adapted to contact with the upper extremity of the hard metal.
collar and which shall serve to prevent vertical movement of the closure device during the operation of forcing its cylindrical wall into proper contact with the interior surface of the hard metal collar.
My invention consists further in forming the sheet metal closure device with an integral concave bottom for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
My invention consists further in providing a sheet metal closure device with a sheet metal 'disk having an area slightly greater than the cross section of the body of the closure device and adapted to rest upon the bottom of the same and also adapted to exert an outward or radial pressure against the wall of the closure device when said disk is subjected to a flattened pressure by any suitable tool all as will be hereinafter and. in detail explained.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may know how to make and use my. improved bottle and closure device and fully appreciate the advantages thereof I will proceed to describe the same referring bynumerals to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck of a bottle with the hard metal collar permanently secured thereon and with the.
closure device in position to be forced radially into sealing contact with the hard metal collar. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the closure device in proper sealing relation with the ring or collar. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of the closure device with the sheet metal disk therein, the bottom of the former being concave and the latter convex. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a modification in which the bottom of the closure device is convex, and the disk concave.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts'in the several figures of the drawing.
1, is the neck of a bottle formed with a circumferential rib 2, at its upper extremity and slightly rounded or beveled on the inner surface as indicated at 3, in Figs. 1 and 2.
4., is a hard metal collar and 5, a soft metal packing which preferably is composed of soft metal such as described in the pending application hereinbefore referred to, which are permanently attached to the neck of the bottle by spinning or otherwise forcing the outer surface of the collar against the ex-. tremity of the bottle and below the rib 2, and the inner wall against the rounded or beveled inner surface of the neck of the'bottle in such manner that the inner wall of the collar will bottom of the closure device and its interior diverge in a downward direction of the collar as clearly shown.
6, is the sheet metal closure device formed with an open upper end which is flanged outwardly as shown at 7, to provide a means by which said closure device may be removed when desired. The lower end of this device is formed with an integral closed bottom 8, which may be of concave form as shown at Fig. 3 or of convex form as shown at Fig. 4, in order that the superficial area of the bottom 8, shall be slightly greater than the area within the cylindrical walland 9, is a sheet metal disk of concave form as shown at Fig. 3, or convex as shown at Fig. 4, and likewise of greater superficial area than the area within the wall of the closure device, and preferably having its outer edge turned to provide an increased contact surface with the wall of the closure device.
The purpose of giving this increased area to the bottom of the closure device has a two fold object in view. When the form is such as shown at Fig. 3, the flattening of the disk 9, will exert a radial pressure against the wall of the closure device 6, to an extent suflicient to force the same into close sealing contact with the interior surface of the hard metal collar 4, while the concave form of the bottom of the closure device will adapt itself to the necessarily increased area within the cylindrical wall of the closure device, and when used with bottles containing gaseous bodies, the expansive force of the gas against the concave bottom will operate to cause a. constant outward pressure of the closure device against the hard metal collar to maintain the established conditions. When the disk are of the form shown at Fig. 4, the con vex bottom in the manner already described adapts itself to the increased area within the cylindrical wall of the device and at the same time operates in the same manner as the disk 9, to spread or force the wall of the closure device against the collar, and in this manner cooperates with the disk 9.
In order that the pressure exerted by any suitable tool in flattening the disk 9, or the disk 9, and the bottom 8, as the case may be, shall not operate to force the closure device below a predetermined locality, the closure device is formed with an outwardly projecting shoulder 10, adapted to seat itself upon the upper extremity of the hard metal collar l 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I From this construction it will be obvious that when pressure is exerted against the disk 9, with any suitable tool to produce the close sealing contact between the walls of the closure device and the collar, the outwardly projecting shoulder 9, of the sealing device resting upon the upper surface of the collar 4, will securely hold the sealing device against any bodily movement vertically.
The convergence of the inner wall of the collar and the position of the wall of the closure device below the projecting shoulder 9, establishes a relation which prevents the separation of the parts except through applied force exerted by a suitable tool beneath the flange 7, of the closure device.
Having described the construction and advantages of my improved bottle what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In combination with a bottle provided at its upper extremity with a hard metal collar secured in air tight relation therewith and having its interior extremity turned downwardly and in contact with the .inner surface of the neck of the bottle and converging upwardly; a sheet metal closure device having an open upper end and an integral closed f bottom and adapted to make a close contact with the converging interior wall of the hard metal collar, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
2. In combination with a bottle, a sheet metal closure device adapted to be expanded into sealing contact with the bottle neck and formed with an open upper end and an integral closed bottom at its lower end, and having an outwardly projecting shoulder inter mediate the upper and lower extremities, adapted to limit the vertical movement of the closure device within the bottle neck, as hereinbefore set forth.
3. In combination with a bottle; a sheet metal closure device having an open upper end and an integral closed bottom of greater area than the cross section of the body, and
provided with an independent expansible sheet metal disk also of greater superficial area than the cross-section of the body of the closure device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. ANDERSON. \Vitnesses:
