UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY B. STEWART, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO THEODORE SOHWER AND JOSEPH E. BLAKE, OF SAME PLACE.-
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,359, dated ANovember 15, 1892.
Application tiled January 12, 1892. Serial No. 417,847. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. STEWART, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My present invention relates to a stopper intended more particularly for use on weissbeer bottles, but which may be used on other bottles, the object being to form a stopper which can be conveniently and quickly applied and made perfectly tight and secure.
M yinvention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is an elevation illustrative of my Fig. 1I is part in elevation and part in vertical section. Fig. III is atop view.
Referring to the drawings, l represents part of a bottle to which I have shown my improvement applied.
2 represents a rotatable band surrounding the neck of the bottle; 3, a bail having inturned lower ends 4, fitting in the eyes 5 of the lever 6, the ends 7 of the lever having pivotal connection with the band 2. This form of bail, lever, and band is old, and I make no claim as inventor thereof.
8 represents the cork, having a threaded central socket 9, in which fits a screw-plug 10, having a perforation in its upper end, through which the bail 3 passes; or some other suitable form of device for connecting the plug to the bail might be adopted by which the bail is enabled to turn the screw-plug.
The operation is as follows: The bottle belever 6 is forced downwardly, drawing the cork into the mouth of the bottle in the usual manner, the operation of the bail and lever being old and well understood, as it is avery common form of device; but it has been found that such a device does not form a sufficientlytight seal for weiss-beer, which is of a very gaseous nature, and hence my provision of the screw-plug by which the cork is made perfectly tight by turning the plug for unscrewing the latter and for increasing the distance between the cork and the bail after the lever and bail have been adjusted, as stated. By connecting the plug to the bail, as eX- plained, a very convenient means of turning the plug is afforded, which is by simply taking hold of the bail and turning it aroundin the right direction, the ring 2 slipping around on the neck of the bottle. In this Way the cork can be made perfectly tight in an instants time, and when it is desired to remove the cork againV the bail is turned in the reverse direction a time or two for screwing in the plug and for lessening the distance between the cork and the bail, and then the lever 6 is thrown up in the usual manner, when the cork can be turned from over the mouth of the bottle.
In the claim I refer generally to the bail 3, rotatable band 2, and lever 6 as a locking device.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a band adapted to encircle a bottle, a bail, a lever constructed of wire and fulcrumed on the band and having the ends of the bail pivotally connected to it', a stopper having a threaded opening, and a threaded stem adjustable in the threaded opening of the stopper and provided with a transverse opening receiving the bail, whereby the stopper is hinged to the bail, substantially as described. ing filled, the cork is put in position and the HARRY B. STEWART.
In presence of- A. M. EBERSOLE, E. S. KNIGHT.
