UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE CHARLES JAMES BRADBURY, F BOSTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO JOHN H. HORNE, OF LAWRENGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
DEVI'CE FOR GRINDING QLL-BARS.
SPECIFICATTON forming part of Letters Patet No. 291,469, dated January l, 1884.
` Application filed March 15, 1883. Rcnewed November 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs JAMES BRAD- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusctts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Grinding Roll-Bars; and I do hereby declare the foly lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will" enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which a i form a part of this specification.
V structed as hereinafter set forth, especially adapted to the purpose, and capable of being `readily inserted and removed, and requiring no boxing up of the roll. a
The drawings accompanying this specification represent in Figure l an isometric elevation of the device containing my invention.` Fig. 2 in such drawings is a longitndinal vertical section. In carrying out my invention, I provide box or trough, C, ofcastiron, of a length somewhat greater than that of the roll to be ground and of a width sufficient to contain enough abrading materials to exert the necessary grin d= ing action upon the 'roll say'of fairiiside measurement of about five inches. The interior of the box C is `filledwith` a solid substance, D, conposed of emery or other durable abrasive material. u
When a roll is to be ground, it 'is raised, the bed-plate removed, and the box C deposted in place of such .bed-plate The roll is then` put in "rtation and lowered by degrees upon the grinding material in the box C until the armed surface of the roll is true, the tub in which box C is set containing sufficient water to cover the trough G, to prevent heating of the knifebars during said grinding operation. It is not essential that the entire depth of the box C be filled with the grinding substance D. In point of fact, such substance may be comparatively shallow, and the box cast with a pocket in its upper part to receive it, as shown in the drawings ata. In this case the sides or lips b b,
supporting said box or pocket a, are to be s trengthened with cross-ribs c c, &e
I claimi The trough or box ,0, having lips b and cross-ribs'c, and containing abrading material D, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I`afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES JAMES BRADBURY.
