L. M. MYERS.
SHINE 0R GLOSS REMOVER AND NAF PRODUCER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC-16| 1918- A Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
I VUlxurrI :T'ATS Specification of Letters Patent.
L LAURA M. MYERS, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHINE on Gross REMOVER Ami NAP-PRODUCER. 1
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Application filed December 16, 1918. SerialrNO. 267,011.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LAURA M. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shine or Gloss Removers and Nap-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
When clothing becomes shiny or polished on account of wear, the user frequently would desire to remove the shine or gloss so that the cloth will have its original appearance, but the ordinary brushes or cleaning devices very often accentuate or increase the gloss instead of removing the same.
The objects of this invention are, to provide a device for removing the gloss or shine from clothing; to provide a device of this character which may be cheaply constructed andwill be conveniently used; to provide such a device in which the active elements may be readily renewed; and, in general, to provide such an improved device as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention:
Figure l is a side view thereof; Vand Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view.
I have discovered that garnet paper or cloth, when properly applied, will serve to remove the gloss on clothing and will tend to produce or raise a nap thereon. This paper or cloth consists of a suitable fabric to which ground or pulverized garnet has been applied in a manner similar to the way in which sandpaper is made.
In order to utilize such garnet paper in a convenient manner, I provide a holder or support for the same, as shown in the drawings. This holder comprises a body portion 3, the upper part of which is rectangular in cross section, while the lower part is substantially circular. The garnet cloth 4 is applied to this body portion and secured thereto in any convenient manner, being preferably wrapped around the same one or more times, as indicated in Fig. 2.- This paper or fabric is held in position by the handle 5, which consistsv of an upper rounded portion 6 and a lower flat portion 7, which extends the full length of the body portion and is preferably slightly narrower than the body. This handle is secured in position by means of screws or the like 8, which are conveniently located at eitherend thereof.
When the device is to be used, it is held by the handle portion, the flanges or flat portions 7 serving to protect the'ends of the lingers from the goods to be acted upon. It
will be noted that the semi-cylindrical lower'.v
portion of the device may be drawn sidewise across 'the goods and there will be af line contact which will be very effective in serving to raise the nap on the cloth, and thereby remove the gloss or shine.
By having the upper part of the body portion 3 made rectangular, flat surfaces such as are indicated at 9 are provided on either I side of the device,` and these surfaces may be used where larger areas are to be acted upon, or where better results may be; obtained by such flat surface. The corners, such as indicated at l0, may be used along the seams or wherever it may be necessary to get into cracks or limited spaces.
By having several layers of the fabric around the body portion in the first instance,
the user is enabled to utilize the device for ,a
larger amount of work by cutting off the, outer layer as it becomes worn and exposing the next inner layer. This may be conveniently done by running a knife along the edge, as indicated at 11.
While I prefer to use garnet cloth, it will be noted that other similar materialvwith a sharp or crystalline surface may be utilized, for example, emery paper or the like.
HavingV thus described my invention,l
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Ina device for removing shine or gloss from clothes, the combination of a holder comprising a substantially rectangular body portion having a semi-cylindrical lower side, garnet paper wrapped one Ior more times around said body portion, a handle having a flat surface engaging with the kpaper on the flat side of the body portion, and means for fastening the handle to the body portion to secure the ypaper in position.
2. In a device of the character set forth comprising a new article of manufacture for removing shine fromclothing, the combination of a body having flat sides and a rounded lower surface, a fabric provided with sharp crystalline grains vapplied to said body, and a. handle secured to the body sind holding the fabric in position, the wrangemeint` being such that the device will have two flat sides and :i rounded bottom. for engagement with the goods to be noted upon.
3. ln 2L device of the Character Sei foth for raising a nap on Cloth, the .combination of a, Wooden block, a fabric coated with kwhen @he device-ie applied to the goods.
