Description

Patented Apr. 10, 1923.
PAEN
BYRON E. BOWLES, OF COUNCIL BLUYFFS, IOWA.
KNIFE SHARIENER.
Application led June 29, 1921. Serial No 481,230.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that BYRON E. BowLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Blus, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to knife Sharpeners and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that a knife may be sharpened by drawing the same through spaces between adjacent blocks, said spaces being wedge shaped in cross section, and to provide within said wedge shaped spaces sharpening members, which sharpening members are preferably formed from files, and are inclined and disposed within chambers 'of the blocks, and are held 'in said chambers by being engaged by a centrally disposed metallic block.
A further object is to provide a knife sharpener having wedge shaped spaces between blocks, one of said blocks being provided with an inclined sharpening element in abutting engagement with a metallic block forming the other side of the wedge shaped space thereby forming a sharpening device which will sharpen a knife in such a way that what is known as a toothed edge will not be formed onthe knife, thereby allowing an even keen edge to be obtained.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth,'shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the knife Sharpener.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the knife Sharpener taken on line 2-2 of Figure l1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular shaped base plate, which base plate is provided with an integral downwardly and inwardly extending member 2, Whah .member has threaded in its horizontal portion 3 a set screw 4, by means of which set screw the device as a whole may be attached to a table 5. Disposed on the base plate 3 is a wooden member 6 of substantially the same size as the base plate 1, said wooden member having disposed thereon wooden blocks 7 adjacent its ends and a centrally disposed metallic block 8. Extending through the blocks 7 and 8 are securing screws 9, the lower ends of which are threaded as at 6 into the base plate 1 and form means for securely holding Athe blocks in place. The yinner sides 11 of the blocks 7 incline downwardly and inwardly and are provided with rectangular shaped chambers 12, in which chambers metallic sharpening elements 13 are disposed. The sharpening elements 13 are preferably files and fit snugly within the chambers 12 in such a manner that the walls of the chambers will prevent longitudinal or vertical displacement. The lower ends of the sharpening elements 13 engage the upper side of the wooden member 6, which member will prevent downward movement of the sharpening elements. The metallic block 8 has its opposite sides 141 spaced from the sides 11 of the'blocks 9 and incline downwardly and outwardly and merge into downwardly and inwardly inclined walls 15 adjacent the lower end of the block 8. Walls 15 engage the faces of the sharpening elements 13 and prevent inward movement of the elements 13 and also form means for securely clamping the elements 13 in the chambers 12 when the securing screws 9 are in place. It will be seen that wedge shaped knife receiving spaces 16 are provided in which a knife may be placed during a sharpening operation and that when the knife is drawn through the wedge shaped spaces 16 the sharpening elements will sharpen the knife and the adjacent inclined surface 14C of the metallic block 8 will prevent a saw or wire edge from being formed on the knife. By providing oppositely disposed sharpening elements 13, it will be seen that both sides of the knife may be sharpened by simply shifting the knife from one wedge shaped space 16 to the other and drawing the knife through said spaces.
From the above it will be seen that a knife sharpening device is provided which simple a soastmtiou and one wherein a keen edge may be formed on a knife in such a manner that a saw or a wire edge cannot be formed.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A knife Sharpener comprising a base plate, a clamping member carried by said base plate whereby said base plate may be detachably secured to a support, a wooden member disposed on said base plate and of substantially the same size as the base plate, three spaced vertically disposed blocks eX- tending upwardly from said wooden member and attached thereto by means of bolts eX- tending therethrough and into the base plate, the adjacent walls of the blocks being oppositely inclined thereby forming wedge shaped spaces, at sharpening elements disposed in recesses in the inclined lfaces of the outer blocks, the inclined faces of the centrally disposed block merging into downwardly and inwardly extending faces in engagement with the inner faces of the flat sharpening elements, and forming means for holding said sharpening elements in place7 said centrally disposed block being formed from metal.
ln testimony whereof I affix my signature.
