HARNESSfPAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,486, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed November 17, 1883` L (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOLLAND C. BABcooK, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness- Pads, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Y Figure l is a perspective view of a'harnesspad embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of part of a pad, looking from the under side, the filling being shown by turning back a corner of the inner lining. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-sectional view of part of the pad on enlarged scale.
My invention consists in providing a harness-pad or the like harness part with a bear ing-surface or lining of rawhide, the said lining being preferably treated with any ordinary solution or w-ash to render it pliable and more or less water-proof, and the pad being made up on a foundation with a filling of soft material-as felt-specially prepared and medicated, the whole secured together, as by stitching, my invention having for its object the prevention and cure of sores and galls ordinarily incident to the use of harnesses. The rawhide, when used asa lining for a pad, as in the form herein described, is rendered waterproof by proper treatment, and so prevents the undue absorption of moisture and sweat by the filling, which, as a further precaution, is treated with an antiseptic, (as carbo1icacid,) that keeps it from becoming foul or a vehicle for disease,
In the accompanying drawings, the letter ct denotes the body or foundation of a pad, made of any suitable material, as enameled leather; b, a filling or interlining, preferably of felt, which is treated with any antiseptic, as carbolic acid; c, the inner lining of rawhide, which is prepared by treatment with an essential oil, and may also be made more waterproof in any ordinary and convenient manner. To adapt the rawhide to this special use, as a lining for harness parts, it is made pliable by the use of oil and the like substances, and when thus prepared it is cooler by several degrees than the surrounding air, and being more or less waterproof sheds instead of imbibing moisture, and these properties fit it particularly for the special 'use to which I put it in this connection as a lining.
In the device herein shown and described, the foundation, filling, and lining are united by a binding, d, as of leather, stitched through and through along the edges of the pad. On the sides of the pad are secured straps or similar means for attaching the pad to the harness.
It is evident that. my invention may be embodied in 'various forms not only in the pad, as herein described, but also in lining other harness parts with which the rawhide may be directly united, and notincorporated inaseparate pad'.
I claim as my inventionl. As an improved article of manufacture, a harness-pad consisting of an outer foundation of enameled leather or other suitable material, an antiseptic filling, and a lining of pliable rawhide, substantially as set forth.
v2. As an improved article' of manufacture,
'a harnesspad or the like device consisting of a foundation of enameled leather or other suitable material, a filling, and a lining of pliable rawhide, all substantially as described.
3. The combination of a foundation, a., an antiseptic interlining, b, and a rawhide lining, c, all substantially as described.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, a harness-pad or analogous article having its bearingsurface covered with pliable rawhide, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
HOLLAND C. BABCOCK.
