To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. KESPOHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Limbs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to artificial limbs, and has for its object the provision of a socket having a wall-cushion or padded wall of special material for the support of the stump of the wearers leg.

It consists of the constructions, combina tions, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawing, the figure is a side elevation, partly in section, of an artificial limb embodying my said invention.

In said drawing, 1 is the partly-hollow or vertically-recessed body portion or main wall of the artificial limb, to which is secured in any suitable manner a foot 2. Within said body portion is constructed in any suitable manner a wall-cushion, preferably concentrio with said body portion or approximately cylindrical, made of the manufactured composition well known to the anatomical truss trade as factis, the use of factis or factice, being a substance obtained by treating or mixing fatoils of any suitable kind with sulfur, preferably with chlorid of sulfur, being regarded by me as highly important for my purpose in view of its springy character and its great durability against the deterioratin or hardening or softening effects of heat or coId or moisture and in view of its non-shrinking character and its immunity from collapse from accidental punctures. The factis may be laid loosely against the inner face of the body portion or may be glued thereto, as desired, and is held or further held in position and protected against abrasion by a thin covering of leather 4 or equivalent protecting material, which covering extends below the lower edge of the factis and above its upper edge, being bent over such upper edge and secured to the outer face of said body portion by gluing or tacking, or both, or in any suitable manner. The lower edge of said covering is preferably reduced to a thin ed e and glued to the interior face of said body portion below the lower edge of the factis.

While I have described certain details of construction, I do not desire to be limited to such details in all respects, my invention being broadly in the formation in said socket of a wall-cushion of the composition known to the trade as factis.

In operation the wall-cushion adapts itself readily to the conformation of the periphery of the Wearers limb and forms a yielding support therefor and has no noticeable heating or drawing or absorptive effects.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In anartificial limb, the combination with a socket portion for the reception of the wearer's limb, of a concentric Wall-cushion formed of factice, a composition of a fat oil or oils and sulfur, positioned in said socket, substantially as described.
