Description
UNITED STATES VPATN T OFFICE.
THOMAS HOPKINS, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY.
SACK-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,695, dated August 21, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HOPKINS, of Newport, Campbell county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Sack-Fastener; and I do hereby ,declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for securely tying' or closing up the mouths of sacks, bags, &c., and consists of two pins or buttons and a connecting link constructed and combined, as hereinafter explained, so as to be permanently secured in position and afford means of attaching the string to the bag and of securing its free end.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l exhibits the construction of the fastener before permanent attachment to the sack. Fig. 2 represents the instrument for permanently securing the fastener to the sack. Fig. 3 is a section of the fastener before attachment. Fig. 4 is a section of the same after attachment. Fig. 5 shows the mode of securing the tying string to the fastener. Fig. 6 shows the mouth of bag and fastener when string is secured.
A and A are two buttons formed of oblong or cylindrical pieces of wood contracted toward each end and at their middle.
B is a ring or yoke which at rst is of the oblong form seen in Figs. l and 3. A hole being punched in the sack the ring B is protruded half way through the side of the sack and a button inserted into each end. The center part of the ring is then compressed as seen in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. For this purpose I employ a pair of pincers such as represented at Fig. 2. One end of a string C being now secured to the ring Bhthe fastening is ready for use.
In use the mouth of the sack is gathered in the usual way and the free end of the string being wound once or more around the sack is then pulled forcibly between the button A and the sack side and wound several times around the ring between the buttons and the sack is fastened, the large parts of the buttons effectually preventing the escape of the end.
I claim as new herein A sack fastener consisting of two pins or buttons A and A and a connecting link B, constructed and combined in the manner and for the purposes setforth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
and of my invention THOMAS HOPKINS.
Vitnesses MAHLON LEEDS, GEO. I-I. KNIGHT.
