Description
UNITED STATES PAENT ()FFIQE.
D. J. OWEN, OF SPRINGVILLE LYNN, PENNSYLVANIA.
BROOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,231. dated May 31, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. J. OWEN, of Springville Lynn, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and Improved Broom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, represents a front elevation of a broom constructed according to my in-' vention, and Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in confining the butt ends of the wisp of a fiat broom in a leather bag of such a form that two of its sides, seen by looking on the fiat side of the broom, converge toward the handle while the two other sides of the same seen by looking edgewise at the broom diverge toward the handle, so that a kind of protuberance is formed which enables a steel spring of the proper form which is secured to the handle to confine the wisp in the bag.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a bag made of leather or any other yielding but not elastic substance and of such a form that two of its sides a, a, converge toward the handle B, as clearly represented in Fig. 1, while its two other sides I), b, diverge up to a certain point toward the handle as clearly represented in Fig. 2. This bag is closed on the to and open at the bottom and the opening 1s just large enough to pass the butt ends of the wisp up into the bag and as the two sides a, a, approach each other, the butt ends of the wisp fill up the space oflered by the two other sides I), and when the entire wlsp,
which constitutes the broom is passed up into the leather bag, the sides 6, of the same are pressed out as clearly represented in Fig. 2, and a steel spring C, is now pressed over the same which is so shaped that it admits the protuberance formed by the sides I), but that it compresses firmly the mouth of the bag by means of two bars 0, which extend nearly all the way across the leather bag close over its mouth and on both sides of the same. This steel spring is secured between two jaws cl, formed by the lower end of a ferrule D, which is attached to the under end of the handle.
It is obvious that when the wisp is used up it is very easy to take out the leather bag A, from within the steel spring G, put in a new wisp and confine it in the spring in the same manner.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
As an improved article of manufacture a broom provided with a leather bag A, spring C and otherwise made as herein shown and described.
D. J. OWEN.
