SHEET MATERIAL DISPENSING CARTON WITH NOTCHED CIRCUMSCRIBING TRAVELLING CUTTER Filed Feb. 11, 1957 *l mum ig I, H! g4 /0 r I II will? I T H W HT INVENTOR.
United States Patent Ernest Calvin Campbell, Jr., Grain Valley, Mo., assignor .to Hallmark Cards Incorporated, Kansas City, Mo., a
corporation of Missouri Application February 11, 1957, Serial No. 639,569 8 Claims. (Cl. 164-73) This invention relates to cutter means for sheet material, and more particularly to structure usable in combination with a carton serving the dual purpose of housing the sheet material and reciprocably mounting the cutter assembly thereon. It is the most important object of the instant invention to provide a carrier reciprocable longitudinally along an elongated carton and having a cutter mounted thereon for movement along an opening in the carton through which the sheet material may be pulled whereby any desired amount of the sheet material may be severed in a single'stroke of the carrier and its cutter.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a combined carton and cutter assembly wherein the cutting edge of a sharp knife or blade is disposed to cooperate with one edge of the carton forming an elongated opening therein so as to easily, quickly and safely sever the sheet material without waste in absence of creasing or otherwise damaging the sheet material, and in a manner to present a straight, smooth, severed edge.
A further object of the instant invention is to provide structure of the kind above set forth having a notch formed in the carrier in a novel manner to receive the sheet material, hold the same in proper relationship to the outlet opening, and properly guide the paper into severing relationship to the cutting edge of the blade. Other objects include important details of construction to be made clear as the following specification progresses.
In the drawing: Figure Us a perspective view of a roll stock container having cut-off element made pursuant to the instant invention. i
I Fig. 2 is a plan viewthereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, cross-sectional view taken on line IIIIII of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse, cross-sectional view taken along line IV--IV of Fig. 3. v
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 3. I a
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the contair'iershowing one of its ends in an open condition; and F'ig. 7 is an enlarged, fragmentary, detailed cross-sectional view taken on line VIIVH of Fig. 2.
The component parts of the assembly illustrated in the drawing include an elongated carton broadly designated by the numeral 10, and a carrier 12 for a cutting element 14 secured to the carrier 12 for reciprocation therewith longitudinally of the carton 10.
Carton is adapted to receive a roll 11 of sheet material 15 such as paper, particularly package wrappings. To this end, carton 10 is preferably polygonal in transverse cross section as seen in Figs. 4 and 5, and provided with a bottom 16, a pair of sides 18 and 20 and a top 22. The ends of the carton 10 are closed by a pair of overlapping flaps 24 and 26 integral with sides 18 and 20 respectively, and a third flap 28 which Patented June 9, 1959 overlies the flaps 24 and 26 and is integral with the bottom 16. A wing 30 on the flap 28 is inserted into the carton 10 between the top wall 22 and the upper edges of flaps 24 and 26. Downturned supporting feet 32 for the carton 10 are struck from the material constituting the bottom 16. I
The sides 18 and 20 are provided with a longitudinal row of elongated openings 34 permitting the user of the assembly to rotate the roller stock 11 within carton 10 and extend the sheet material 15 in the manner shown by Fig. 5, through an elongated, longitudinal opening or slot 36 formed in the top wall 22. Spacers 38 are provided in the carton 10 adjacent the ends thereof to hold the roll .11 properly aligned with the opening 36 as seen in Fig. 3.
Tubular carrier 12 circumscribes the carton 10 complementally therewith for free sliding movement longitudir 12 are rectangular and coextensive nally thereof and includes, therefore, four interconnected walls 40, 42, 44 and 46 which engage and rest fiatly against carton walls 22, 18, 16 and 20 respectively. The bottom Wall 44 and one side wall 42 of the carrier in length. The top' wall 40, however, of the carrier 12, is cut away to present a pair of edges 48 and 50 that are relatively perpendicular, the edge 48 being parallel to and flush with edge 52 of top wall 22 which forms one side of the opening 36. Thus, the edge 50 is substantially perpendicular to the edge 52 and partially traverses the opening 36. The side wall 46 of carrier 12 is also properly cut away' to present an inclined edge 54 that merges with the outermost end of edge 50.
I p A substantially J-shaped notch 56 is formed in the top wall 40 at the inside corner presented by edges and 50, notch 56 extending initially in parallelism with the edge 48 and terminating in an inclined portion 58 that is angularly displaced with respect to edges 48 and 52,
. presenting an acute angle between the notch portion 58 and the edge 50.
The cutting element 14 is preferably in the nature of a relatively flat, thin blade having a cutting edge 60 that extends across the edge 52 in angular relationship to the latter and, therefore, at substantially the same angularity; as the notch portion 58. A
portion of the cutting edge portion 58 as seen in Figs. 62 between edge 50 and notch 56- is to' facilitate insertion of the sheet 60 is cleared by the notch 2 and 7, and corner preferably rounded material 15 into the notch 56. The cutting element 1,4?- may'be attached to the wall 40 between the latter and the wall 22 in any suitable manner such as by use of adhesive or gummed tape.
In use, the carrier 12 is initially disposed atone end of the carton 10 as illustrated in Figs. l3, whereupon the-carton 10 is held so that-through use of the thumb and-fingers of one hand, roll 11 may be grasped through the openings 34 and rotated so that the sheet material 15 may be reached and pulled through the opening 36.. Such sheet material 15 should be folded'or looped over theedge 52 as illustarted in Fig. 5, and held so-as to be received by the notch 56.
Thereupon, the carrier 12 is shifted along the carton 10 to the opposite end thereof bringing the cutting edge 60 into severing relationship thereto. During such movement of the carrier 12 along the carton 18, the notch 56 facilitates feeding of the sheet material to the cutting edge 60 and holds the same in proper relationship to the edge 52 of carton 10. The sheet material 15 is free to move into the inclined notch portion 58 and be severed by the cutting element 14 throughout that portion of the cutting edge 60 Which is exposed by the notch portion 58.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
