(Cl. 206-58 The present invention relates to dispensing cartons and particularly to a carton of the type for containing rolls of paper and the like, such for instance, as rolls of waxed paper from which the paper is dispensed in web form and torn in pieces of desired lengths against a cutter.
An object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing package adapted to hold a single roll of paper or other material so as to protect the same from dust and to permit the ready withdrawal of the paper web.
The invention further contemplates a package made from a single blank of material, which is scored and folded to provide a package of the requisite form and construction.
. An important object of the invention is to provide a carton having a hinged front panel so as to permit ready grasping of the free edge of the paper web.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a package which is economical to manufacture, easy to assemble, and eflicient in use.
The above, other and further objects of the invention, will be apparent from the following de- 'scription, the accompanying drawing and appended claims.

The blank is cut and scored to provide a top wall panel l4, rear wall panel l3, bottom wall panel l2, upper and lower front wall panels l5 and I] and a hinged panel l0 overlapping the of a box embodyupper front wall panel IS.
The top wall panel is provided with end flaps which fold alonglines l and are free along cut lines I' and 2. The flaps are scored at their extremity to provide tuck-in flaps 2l.' Notches are cut in flaps 20 to provide locking portions when the flaps are assembled.
The bottom wall panel l2 has no end flaps.
The rear wall I3 is scored along lines 6 to provide flaps l9. These flaps have L- shaped slits 28, 29 positioned near the fold lines 6 as shown in Figure 5. The upper edges offlaps l9 are cut to provide an inclined portion 39, a horizontal portion 40 and a stepped portion 4| to provide a suitable interlocking structure for tuck-in flaps 2|.
The upper front wall panel I5 is scored along line F to provide a free flap l6 which is folded inside the box to overlie the roll 46 as shown in Figure 2. The front wall is scored along lines 8 to provide end flaps 22 which are provided with trlangularly shaped notches 21 to form locking tongues 26.
A rectangular opening 45 is located in the medial portion of the top and front walls for the purpose of accommodating the thumb of the user when the end of the web is grasped.
The upper front wall panel I5 is overlapped by a swingable panel I 0 which is hinged along score line A. A tear-01f blade is scored to the panel l0 so that its serrated edge will have the points of the serrations extending slightly beyond the edge of said panel. The tear-off blade may be fastened by any suitable means to the outside or inside of the panel Ill.
Panel section I ll is provided with end flaps ll which are foldable along score lines 4 and cut free along lines 3. The ends of flaps I! act as stops to limit the outward swing of panel I 0 as shown in Figure 4. When panel I0 is swung to the dotted line position shown in Figure 4 the tips of flaps I! contact the top wall as shown by the dotted lines and thereby limit he outward swing of panel I0. In my preferred box construction panel It) does not swing out more than about out of the front panel plane.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the specific means disclosed for limiting the outward swing of the hinged panel.
Any other suitable means such as, for example, pieces of flexible tape or wire attached to the box and the panel may be used if desired.
The lower front wall panel II is provided with end-flaps l8 foldable along side lines 5. The flaps are cut at one edge alonglines 42 and 43 to provide ofi-set portions adjacent the panel I0. Triangular cut out notches 38 are provided on the other edge of the flaps to form locking. tongues 24 which hold the panel H in fixed position.
The method of making a box from the blank illustrated in Figure 5 is as follows:
The blank is folded into box-like form along scored lines B, C, D, E and F to form panels H), II, I2, l3, l4, l5 and I6. Roll 46 is placed within the panels with panel I6 folded thereover as shown in Figure .2. End flaps I9 are then folded over the end of the box as shown in Figure 3 and tongues 24 are inserted in the L-shaped slots 29 thereby locking the lower front wall panel II in position. Tongues 26 of end flaps 22 are then inserted in the L-shaped slots 28 thereby locking the upper front wall panel IS in position.
Stop flaps I1 are then folded over the ends of the box as shown in Figure 4 and end flap folded thereover and locked into position by means of tuck-in flap 2|.
In using the carton it is simply held, say in the left hand, with the bottom I2 resting against the palm, the left thumb resting lightly on flap 32, and the fingers grasping thelower front wall panel II. The thumb of the right hand is then inserted inside the hinged panel In in the vicinity of the cut out portion 45 which accommodates the backof the thumb. The hingingpanelisswung out sufficiently to permit grasping of the end of the web 41 which can then be drawn out to the required length. A slight pressure is then applied on flap 32 with the left thumb to hold the roll 32 rigidly and the web is cut off on the cutter blade 40.
After the web is cut the end portion thereof will be retained in the passage formed by panel HI overlapping the front wall l5. End flaps i! being in frictional engagement between portions of the outer closure flaps 20 and the inner flap I9 will restrain the outward swing of hinged panel ID to such limited extent as to prevent the end of the cut web from folding back on itself and receding within the box. This construction therefore serves to retain the end of the web within the passage for grasping by the fingers.
The box made in accordance with this invention is strong and rigid enough for all purposes intended, pleasing in appearance, and one which lends itself very readily for use in connection with rolled waxed paper or other types of paper. The box is securely fastened together without the use of glue, paste, stickers, or like means thus making assembly rapid and economical.
The panels or walls have been designated as front, bottom, rear, top and the like, but it is to be understood that this is for convenience only, and the invention is not to be construed as limited by designation of these parts in the manner mentioned.
It is to be understood that many changes may be made in the proportion of parts and equivalents may be substituted or used without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A box for a supply of a rolled web including a top, rear, bottom and front wall, said front wall extending short of the bottom wall, overlapping end flaps for closing the ends of said box, a hinged panel overlapping a portion of said front wall to provide a passage therebetween for the web, said hinged panel having end portions movable in frictional engagement between overlapping portions of the said end flaps, said end portions being so constructed and arranged as to limit the outward swing of said hinged panel to such limited extent as to retain the end of said web within said passage in position for manual grasping thereof.
2. A box for a supply of rolled web material including a top, rear, bottom and front panel, said front panel consisting of an upper and lower panel portions, said upper panel portion having a folded flap portion the free end of same being adapted to overlie a roll contained within said box, the said lower panel portion terminating short of the upper panel portion to provide a longitudinal slot for the passage of the web material, and a hinged panel integral with the saidlower panel portion overlapping said slot and a portion of the upper front panel to provide a passageway for withdrawal of the web material.

A box for a. supply of rolled web material including a. top, rear, bottom and front panel, said rear wall having end flaps provided with slits for receiving locking tongues, said front panel consisting of spaced upper and lower panel portions, said upper panel portion having a longitudinally hinged flap portion adapted to overlie a roll contained within said box and having end 'fiaps provided with locking tongues, said lower panel portion having end flaps provided with locking tongues and having a panel integrally hinged thereto, said hinged panel overlapping the upper panel portion of said front panel.
5. A box for a supply of rolled web material including a top, rear, bottom and front panel, said rear wall having end flaps provided with slits for receiving locking tongues, said front panel consisting of spaced upper and lower panel portions, said upper panel portion having a longitudinally hinged flap portion adapted to overlie a roll contained within said box and having end flaps provided with locking tongues said lower panel portion having end flaps provided with locking tongues, a panel integrally hinged to said. lower panel portion, said hinged panel overlapping the upper panel portion of said front panel and having stop portions at the ends thereof for limiting the outward swing of said pan'el.
6. A box for a supply of rolled web material including a top, rear, bottom and front panel, said front panel consisting of spaced upper and lower panel portions, said upper panel portion having a. longitudinally hinged flap portion adapted to overlie a roll contained within said box and having end flaps provided with locking tongues, said lower panel portion having end flaps provided with locking tongues and having a panel integrally hinged thereto, said hinged panel overlapping the upper panel portion of said front panel, saidrear wall being provided with end flaps having notches therein for receiving the locking tongues of the front panelportions, said top wall having flaps overlying said end flaps and having a tuck-in flap for locking same in position.
