Description

March 4, 1958 w. A. KLEIN 2,825,452 DISPENSER CARTON WITH RETAINER FOR LEADING EDGE OF ROLLED SHEET Filed May 4, 1956 s iii ii INVENTOR.
ii BY ATTORNEYS United States Patent 2,825,452 DISPENSER CARTON WITH RETAINER FOR LEADHYG EDGE OF ROLLED SHEET Walter A. Klein, Midland. Mich., assignor to The Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Mich., a corporation of Delaware Application May 4, 1956, Serial No. 582,868 1 Claim. (Cl. 206-58) This invention relates to an improved dispenser carton for rolled sheet stock. It has particular relation to such a carton used to pack, ship and dispense from a roll contained in such carton any desired length of wrapping sheet, especially that class of film or foil wrapper coming into common use for wrapping foods.
A problem has arisen when attempting to use conventional dispensing cartons for thin plastic film, due to the tendency of such film or foil to cling to surfaces of the same or other materials. The cling tendency is advantageous when such foils are used for wrapping purposes, but causes difiiculty at the time a desired length of foil is severed from a supply roll. The leading end of foil on the roll tends to fall or snap back against the roll and cling to it. Because the foil may be very thin, of the order of 0.0005 inch, it is extremely difiicult to locate the lost leading end when it is desired to sever another length of foil from the roll. Sometimes it is noted that the leading foil end clings to the cutting means attached to dispensing cartons, and care is required to retrieve the foil end from the usually rough or serrated cutter.
It would be desirable to have, and it is among the objects of this invention to provide an improved dispenser carton for rolled sheet stock, especially for rolled film having a tendency to cling to opposed surfaces, which insures retention of the leading edge of the rolled sheet for easy access, out of contact with the supply roll and out of contact with the severing means. Related objects will become apparent.
The improved dispenser of the present invention is illustrated in the acompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of the improved carton;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the means for retaining the leading film end;
Fig. 3 is a similar cross-section, showing a length of film being held in position to be severed from the supply roll;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the carton, taken along line 44 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5' is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the end-retaining means of Fig. 2.
In its commonest and most practical form the new dispenser carton is a right parallelepiped with five of its six faces fixedly positioned, and with the sixth face constituting a cover or access member 11 hinged along one long edge 12 at the rear of the carton and having the other long edge 13 folded or bent inwardly at an angle to approach or touch the inner side of the front face 14 0f the carton above the midline of said front face, but below the line of attachment of a film-severing strip 15 on the upper edge of the said front face 14. It is preferred to provide axially aligned short cylindrical bosses 16 affixed to the internal faces of the ends 17 of the container, to support the hollow core 18 on which the film supply roll 19 is wound and to serve as an axis of revolution for said roll. The retainer element for the leading end of the film supply is a flat strip 20 resiliently hinged within the carton adjacent the front face 14 along a line above the midline of said front face, and tending Fee to press against the downwardly turned front edge 13 of the cover member 11. It is preferred to provide one or two apertures 23 in the cover member 11 along the fold line, for a purpose to be described.
To put the assembly into operative condition, the roll 19 of sheet material is mounted in the carton 10 to unwind from the bottom toward the front face 14. A length of the sheet is led up along the inner front face of the carton, thence between the downwardly directed flap 13 of the cover member 11 and the upwardly directed and resiliently hinged retainer strip 20, and finally out of the carton. To sever a length of the sheet material 21, the leading end 22 is grasped, suitably near apertures 23 which permit inserting a finger behind the film end 22, and drawn forward far enough to provide the required length of sheet, and is pulled down over the working edge of the severing means 15. While being brought into position for severing a length of sheet material, the sheet emerging from the carton presses against the retainer strip 20, forcing it against the front 14 of the carton and out of pressure engagement with the downwardly directed cover flap 13. As soon as pressure is released, due to severance of the withdrawn length of the sheet, the newly formed leading end 22 is automatically secured by, and projects a short distance from the previously described opposiing flat faces of the retainer assembly. The end 22 is never lost, and can be grasped without having to bring ones fingers near the cutter strip.
The retainer element 20 mounted on the inner face of the front panel of the carton may be, as shown, a reverse folded fiberboard, one fold of which is secured to the carton, or it may be a strip of any smooth and at least semi-rigid material mounted on the upper half of the inner face of the front panel 14 of the carton by any suitable spring means so as to press in the described manner against the'inwardly directed cover flap 13.
In the foregoing description, reference has been made to front, top, back, bottom and end members of the carton since a common practice is to use such cartons in a position to have the access panel on top, and the discharge port at the front of the package. It is to be understood that these terms are used herein for simplicity of description only, as the carton can be used in any of several positions.
I claim:
A carton for dispensing sheet material from a supply roll contained therein, being generally in the form of an elongated right parallelepiped and having two end panels, a front panel, a bottom panel, a rear panel, a cover member hinged to the top edge of the rear panel and having an inwardly bent front edge flap directed toward and terminating near the inner face of the front panel above the midline of the front panel, a resiliently mounted fiat strip supported on the inner face of the front panel above its midline, disposed parallel to and in opposed pressure relationship with the outer surface of said inwardly bent flap of the cover member to serve therewith as a retaining means for the leading end of sheet material threaded therethrough from the said supply roll, said resiliently mounted flat strip being the upwardly directed free end of a reverse-folded paperboard strip, the other end of which beyond the fold is secured to said front panel; and, a serrated sheet-severing strip mounted on and projecting slightly above the upper edge of said front panel of the carton.
