ANIMATED GREETING CARD Filed Sept. 14, 1950 IN VEN TOR.
BY (/00? Z3. 0770/22 Patented July 29, 1952 ANHHATE D GREETING CARD Jack OHara, Kansas City, Mo., assignor to Hall Brothers, Inc., Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application September 14, 1950, Serial No. 184,818
2 Claims. (01. 46-120) This invention relates to a greeting card and more particularly to a greeting card of rocking horse type.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a card of this character having a pair of runners curved so that the card will rock when in extended position and which will collapse to a flat position for insertion in an envelope.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a card having curved lower extremities so that the card will rock thereon and remain in extended position; to provide a card simulating a horse or other animal; to provide for mounting of a caricature of a child or other object upon the horse and pivotally attached thereto so that it will swing back and forth with respect to the horse upon rocking movement of the card; and to provide a device of this character simple, economical to manufacture, and efflcient in operation.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on a line 2-2, Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a side view illustrating the caricature pivotally mounted thereon and shown in dotted lines in one position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the pivoted member.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the body of the device Referring more in detail to the drawings:
l designates a card embodying the features of my invention comprising a single sheet of paper or other material having sufiicient body or strength to bear its weight when in use. The card as here shown illustrates the body 2 of a horse or other animal having a neck portion 3, head 4, back 5 and tail 6.
The lower portion of the body 2 is extended forming one side 1 of a base 7 for the animal and the lower edge is curved as indicated at 8 to form a rocker on the base.
The rear portion of the card is .provided with an extension forming a second base 9 having a curved lower edge forming a second rocker Ill. The base 9 is formed integral with the base memher 1 by an attaching tab 1 l formed by slot portions I2 and I3 from the rear of the base porrtion and having fold lines l4 and ii at the conmeeting edges of the tab II and a center fold line [5 for a purpose later described.
The front portion of the base is formed with a connecting tab or member I1 formed integral with the base portion 1 and provided with fold lines l8 and I9 and a center fold 20 also for a purpose later described. The outer edge 2| of the tab H is formed with a locking tab 22 for engagement in a slot 23 in the outer portion of the rocker 9. The rockers 8 and H] are provided at the outer end with tips 24-25 and 26-21 respectively to simulate the appearance of rockers on a chair or the like.
The back 5 of the animal is provided with an opening 28 adapted to receive a pin or the like 29 for pivotally attaching to the back of the animal a caricature of a child or the like 30. The pin extends through an opening 3! just below the neck portion of such caricature.
The card proper is cut from a single sheet of material and the base 9 is folded on the fold lines 14 and I5 so that the rocker ill will be parallel with the rocker 8 and. the tab I1 is folded on the fold lines 18 and I9 and the locking tab 22 insorted in the slot 23 of the base 9 so that the card will stand in upright position and rock on the rockers 8 and Hi. When it is desired to collapse the card for insertion in an envelope, the fold lines It and 20 of the connecting tabs H and I! will be moved inwardly so that the base 9 will lie fiat against the base 1.
When the card is set up rocking movement of the card back and forth on the rockers will cause the caricature 30 to pivot on its respective ends and move forwardly and backwardly to simulate a child riding on a horse or other animal, the riding caused by the rocking horse movement.
The lower end of the caricature 30 is provided with an opening 32 adapted to receive a pin or the like 33 having its inner end provided with a flat head 34 to allow the caricature to slide freely against the body of the animal.
The top of the body of the card is cut out simulating the back portion 35 of the horse and the shoulder portion 36 of the caricature of the child riding the horse, having arms 31, hands 38 and holding a hat 39. Depicted upon the front face 40 of the card is the waist portion 4|, legs 42 and foot 43 of the child wearing chaps 44 and also depicting a saddle 45 having a stirrup 46. The front face of the caricature bears the resemblance of a child and includes a handkerchief 41 around his neck, and the pivot pin 29 holding the caricature to the body portion of the on the outer side of the opposite rocker may be placed verses or rhymes or other matter, if desired.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved rocking horse card simulating a child riding on the horse caused by 0 the rocking movement thereof.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 7
1, A greeting card simulating a horse withthe' legs and body of a child thereon comprising a single sheet of material, including sections interconnected by intermediate sections along fold lines at an edge of each of said interconnected sections whereby said interconnected sections are in substantially parallel relation, one of said interconnected sections having a free end" and a slot therein, one of said intermediate sections having a tab insertable through said slot to interconnect said interconnected sections, said interconnected sections being curved on their lower edges and their ends extending outwardly from the intermediate sections forming rocking portions, an appendage simulating the head of a child pivotally attached to the back of the body of the child on said card whereby an appearance of riding is caused by rocking said card, said appendage having an elongated body having an opening in the lower end thereof, and means in said opening engaging the back of said card providing free rocking movement of said appendage,
said intermediate sections having fold'lines near the centers thereof for folding one of said interconnected sections against the other.
2. A greeting card simulating a horse with the legs and body of a child thereon comprising a 40 4 single sheet of material, including sections interconnected by intermediate sections along fold lines at an edge of each of said interconnected sections whereby said interconnected sections are in substantially parallel relation, one of said interconnected sections having a free end and a slot therein, one of said intermediate sections having a tab insertable through said slot to interconnect said interconnected sections, said interconnected sections being curved on their lower edges and their ends extending outwardly from the intermediate sections forming rocking portions, and an appendage simulating the head of a child pivotally attached to the back of the body of the child on said card whereby an appearance of riding is caused by rocking said card,.said intermediate sections having fold lines near the centers thereof for folding one of said interconnected sections against the other, said interconnected sections having spaces for greetings and verses respectively.-
