NEWABK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB F ONE-HALF T0 ABRAHAM LEWIS, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
GALLOPIN G HORSE.
Application led October 2, 1922. Serial No. 591,715.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, BLA ZsAnNY, a citi-- zen of Hungary, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gallopin Horses,- of which -the following is a speci cation.
llhis invention relates to toys, having more particular reference to the type of l0 toy known as a hobby horse, the invention having for an object to provide a novel toy of this type in the use of which the various members of the animal are caused to move in a manner approximating or resembling the movementsofa real horse.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the a pended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a hobby horse constructed according to my invention. y
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, this view being taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig; 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail fragmentary orizontal sectional view taken on the line 4.--4 of Fig. 2 and illustrating the means for oscillating the head of the horse.
Fig. 5 is a like view on the line 5-5 of Fi 2 and illustrating the means for oscillating the tail of the horse.
As here shown my improved toy comprises a rectangular base on which is xed a walllike frame 11 which extends longitudinally of the base midway between opposite sides thereof. Supported at front and rear ends of this frame,'adjacent the top thereof, are shafts- 12 and 13 respectively from the ends of which pairs of arms 14 and 15 hang. To the lower ends of these arms the body 16 of the horse is pivotally attached, as indicated at 17 and 18, the body being of hollow construction and open on the lower side, and enclosing the top of the frame 11 and the arms 14, 15.
The front legs 20 and hind legs 21 of the horse are pivotally attached to the body at the before mentioned points 17 and 18 respectively,u being arranged to swing on thelr pivots with the arms 14, 15 and 1ndependently of the body as the latter reciprocates back and forth on the. said arms, pins 23 fixed in the upper ends of the legs above their pivot points projecting through arcuate slots 24 in the body to engage with the arms 14, 15.
The front and vrear legs are pointed at thel knees as indicated at 30, an independent motion being given to the lower portions 20', 21' of the legs as the body swings back and forth. This is accomplished by means of rigid arms 31, 32 on the said leg elements 20', 21 to which are attached the ends of links 33, 34 whose opposite ends connected to cross bals 35 in the frame 10.
The'head 38 of the horse is arranged to move up and down as the body 16 reciprocates, the neck 38 being pivoted at its base to the shoulders as at 39. Projecting from the front shaft 12, through the slot 41 in the frame 10, is a finger 42 which projects between two pins 43 carried bythe neck and thus causes the neck and head to move as shaft 12 oscillates. The base portion 38a of the neck is counterweighted to balance the head 38.
The ears 45 may also be caused to move, being here shown as pivoted as at 46 and having integral tail-pieces such as 47 which are united by a bar 48 connected by cord 49 to a second finge-r 50 on the shaft, a spring 51 being also connected to the bar 48 to move the ears in an opposite direction to that in which they are moved by the cord 49.
The tail 55 is arranged to have a lateral swinging movement -an'd is mounted on an arm 56 pivoted as at 57 and extending over the rear end of the frame 10, this arm having a cam slot 58 therein engaged by a pin 59 on the frame so that as the body 10 swings back and forth the tail is moved from side to side.
The child using the toy sits on the yback of the horse with his feet on the base 10 and moves the horse back and forth, causing the various members to move as above pointed out.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right', ,is reserved to all vchanges and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as denedin the ap nded claims.
aving thus described my invention what I claimI as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of lthe United States is as follows:
1. A toy comprisin a frame, front and rear pairs of arms spending from said frame, and a horse suspended from the lower end of said arms and covering said frame,
v legs pivotally attached to said body vcoincident with its points of suspension from said arms, and devices 0n said legs projecting through arcuate slots in the body to engage the said arms to cause the legs to swing in unison with the said arms.
2. A toy comprising a frame, front and rear pairs of arms depending 'from said frame, and a horse suspended from the lower end of said arms -and'covering said frame, legspivotally attached to said body co-incident with its points of suspension from said arms, and devices on said legs 'lower end of said arms and covering to engage the said armst'o cause the le to swing in unison with the'said`arms,`sa1d legs `being jointed, and means forcausing' upper leg members.
3. A toy comprisin rear pairs of arms depending from said frame, and a lhorse suspended from the said frame, legs pivotally attached vto sai body co-'incident with its points of suspension from said arms, and devices on said le s projecting through arcuate slots in the bo y to engage the `said arms to cause the le to swing in unison with the said arms, sa1d legs being jointed, and means for causing the lower leg members to swing upon the upper leg members, comprising rigid arms on the lower leg members, and links connected to said arms.
In testimony whereof I have ailixed my signature.
BLA ZSARNAY.
