SULKY PLOW. No. 269,427. Patented Deo.19,1882.

UNITE STATES PATENT FFICE.
MICHAEL KITE, OF PRAIRIE TOWNSHIP, JACKSON COUNTY, MISSOURI.
SULKY- PLOW.
'SRJJIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,427, dated December 19, 1882. Application filed July 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL KITE, of
7 Prairie township,in the countyof Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Hinge Couplings for Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a part of a sulky-plow to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is perspective view of my improvement, shown as applied to a plow-beam and draw-bail. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same, the plow-beam being shown in cross-section.
The object of this-invention is to improve the construction of the double-hinge couplings for which Letters Patent No. 25l,895 were granted to me January 3, 1882, in such a man ner as to give the plow better oontrolover the sulky and prevent side draft upon the sulkytongue.
The invention consists in a double-hinge coupling for sulky-plows, constructed with a clamp to hold the plow-beam, and connected by a bolt with a bracketand bent brace-bar hinged to the draw-bail, whereby the plow-beam will firmly control the sulky and preventside draft, while having a free lateral and vertical movement, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a wheel, B the arched axle, G the tongue, and D the draw-bail, of an ordinary plow-sulky.
E represents the beam, F the handles, Gthe standard, and H the mold-board, of an ordinary plow.
lis a U-shaped bar, which passes around the plow-beam E,aud hasa bolt, J, passed through its projectingentls at one side of the said beam. The bar I and bolt J form a clamp to receive and hold the plow-beam E, and are secured to the said plow-beam by one ormore set-screws, K, which pass through the upright middle part of the barI and rest against the said beam.
L is an upright bar, the lower end of which is bent outward at rightangles, and has a hole formed through it to receive the lower end of the bolt J.
To the side bar, L, is secured, by the bolts M N, a bar, 0, the upper end of which is bentoutward at right angles, and has a hole formed through it to receive the upper end of the bolt J. The clamp I, bolt J, and bars L 0 thus form a hinge and allow the plow-beam to have a free lateral play.
To the lower part of the bar L is secured, by the bolt N, the lowerend of the bar P, which is bentoutward, inclined outward and upward, and its upper end is bent upward, so as to be parallel with and at the same height as the upper end of the bar L.
Between thelower parts of the bars L P is interposed the end of abar, R,whichis secured in place by the bolt N. The bar R is bent at right angles, passes beneath the bars L I, and has a hole formed through it to receive the bolt J, by which it is secured in place. At theother side of the beam E the bar R is bent upward at right angles, so as to be parallel with the the bar L, and the said bar is made of such a length that its upper end will be at the same height as the bars L P.
In the upper ends ofthe bars P L Rare formed holes to receive the draw-bail D. The bars P L R and the draw-bail D thus form a hinge to give the plow-beam E a free vertical play.
The coupling is kept in place by one orrnore collars or clamps, Q, placed upon the bail 1), between the bars P L or between the bars L R, or in both places, and secured in place by set-screws, clamping-screws, or other suitable means.
The coupling canbe applied to and removed from the draw-bail D by taking out the bolts J N, which'allow the bars I LR to he slipped over the angles of the said bail.
\Vith this improvement the plow-beam will have a more direct draft upon the sulky, so as to avoid any side draftand prevent sidepressure by the sulky-tongue.
If desired, the coupling can be made without theinclined bar I; but [prefer to use thesaid bar, as giving theplow-beam better controlot' thesulky.
I have shown and'described my double-hinge coupling as swingingbelow thedraw-bail; but with most plows it will be used above thebail, its position depending upon the construction of the sulkyand of the plow to be connected with the sulky. Another advantage of this construction is,that it allows a square corner to be turned without raising the plow out of the ground.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A double-hinge oouplingfor sulky-plows, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the plow-beam clamp I, the bracket 0 L P, the bent bracebar R, and the bolt J, as set forth.
2. 1n adouble-hinge couplingforsulky-plows,
the combination, with adraw-bail, D, the plowbeam clamp I, the bars 0 L, and the bolt J, of the bent base-bar R, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the coupling is strengthened a gainstlateral strain, as set forth.
3. Inadouble-hingecouplingforsulky-plows, the combination, with the draw-bail D, of the plow-beam clamp I, the brackets O L P, the bent bracebar It, and the boltJ, the clampturning horizontally on the bolt and the bracket and brace-bar turning vertically on the bail,
whereby the plow-beam will firmly control the sulky and prevent side draft, while having a free lateral and vertical movement, as set forth.
MICHAEL KITE.
