IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,278, dated August 3, 1875; application filed April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH O. JENKINS, of Lebanon, in the county of Wilson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double Cultivators, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line 00 a, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the middle beam, B is the inner beam, and (J is the outer beam, of each part of the cultivator. The forward end of the middle beam A projects and has a hook formed upon it for the attachment of the 'draft. The
. forward ends of the inner and outer beams B O are secured to the opposite sides of the middle beam A by bolts, two to each side beam. The forward parts of the side beams are bent twice at an obtuse angle, so as to bring the rear parts of the three beams parallel with each other, and the three plows to the proper distance apart.
This construction brings each plow directly' in line with its beam and all the beams parallel with the line of draft, causing the plows to run steady and preventing any twist.
The rear parts of the beams A B G are curved downward, and are slotted near their ends to receive the bolts D, by which the plows F are secured in place, so that the said plows may be adjusted up or down, as may be required. These slots are formed by spreading the iron so that it will not be weakened, and so as to form a wider seat for the plows E.
Upon the ends of the beams A B O are formed upwardly-projecting toes F to enter holes or recesses e in the rear side of the plows E, and prevent the said plows from turning upon the bolts D.
Several holes or recesses e are formed in the plows to receive the toes F, so that the said plows may be adjusted up or down, as may be required. This connection may be applied to wooden plow-stocks by attaching to their standards a slotted plate.
G are the handles, the forward ends of which are secured to the plow-beams by a bolt, H, which may be made long, so as to pass through two or more of the said beams to give a firmer support to said handles.
The handles G are supported at the proper elevation by the braces I, the lower ends of which are secured to the plow-beams.
J K is the coupling by which the two parts of the cultivator are connected, and which consists of the arched bar J hinged at its ends to the inner ends of two bars or blocks, K, bolted to the plow-beams.
This coupling allows either part of the cultivator to be raised without disturbing the other part.
It will be observed that the bow J is not only pivoted to blocks K to turn in a vertical plane, but the blocks themselves preferably allowed to turn or have slight play on their fastening-bolts in a horizontal plane. This gives the plows an opportunity to accommodate themselves to the movements of the horses. This mode of coupling two cultivators or gang-plows at the middle enables the plowman readily to turn or lift each frame laterally, so as to avoid stones or stumps. The frames themselves can also be turned on one side, back to back, and thus dragged from the field without even being held. by the plowman.
By detaching the coupling J K, and attaching another handle to each part, two single cultivators will be produced.
The outer beams 0 may be moved forward and secured by the bolts that secure the inner beams B; or the inner beams B may be moved back and secured by the bolts that secure the outer beams O or the outer beams 0 may be moved forward and the inner beams B moved back, as may best adapt the machine for the particular plow ing required to be done. Some of the plows may also be replaced with sweeps or scrapers when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with two eultivators or gang-plows, of a median coupling, consisting of the blocks K K, and pivoted bow J, as and for the purpose specified.
