UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
RUSSELL G. DUDLEY, OF JERSEY GITY, NEW JERSEY.
sHuTTER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,168, dated ovember 7, 1882.
Application filed July 15, 1882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUSSELL G. DUDLEY,a
vcitizen of the United States, and a resident'of reference' being had to the annexed drawings,
makinga part of this specification, and to the letters and ii gures ot' reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings-is a bottom view of my device detached from the window-trarne. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same applied to a window frame or sill, and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the two catches.
This invention has relation to fastenings for windowshutters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangementof the casedesigned to belet into the window-sill, and provided with a depending stop-flange in front, the laterally-opposed inwardly-turned hooks pivoted to said plate, connected by a spring, and provided respectively with horizontal inwardly-extending arms, one in front of the other,
and the operating-rod extending through a channel or perforation in the sill, and having a neck-recess around its inner end to receive a notch-bearing formed in a lug on the rear arm, all as hereinafter set t'orth.
In the accompanying drawings, the lettera designates the case, which is plane on its upper surface, which is designed to be flush with the surface of the window-sill when said case is let into a recess in thesame, said recess being made. at the outer margin .of the sill and protected in front by a depending flange, b, on each side of which are openings, through which the catch-heads of the hooks project.
c and c designate the hooks, which are laterally opposed to each other, having their catch-heads d turned inward, or toward each other, in front of the case a. .lhese hooks are pivoted to the under side of the case by screws e, which extend through perforations in their angular portions. These hooks are formed with studs y, to which the ends of a conmeeting-sprin g, h, which operates to draw the (No model.)
hooks toward each other, are fastened. The hook c is formed with an inwardly-extending or transverse arm, 7c, at right angles to its shank, said arm lying under the case and extending past the center thereof. The hook o is also provided with a horizontal transverse arm, c, extending past the center of the plate, in rear of the arm k, and designed, when pushed forward, to engage said arin. The arm k is provided with a vertical notch-bearing,
lug, Z, which engages a neck channel or bearing, n, formed around the inner end ofthe operating rod p, which extends horizontally through a channel or perforated way made in the sill. ln the front end ot' the perforation is inserted a wear-sleeve, z, which is located around the operating-rod and serves to protect said rod and the sill.
When the shutters are closed their hooks automatically engage the hooks c c of this fastening, and are securely held. In order to effect a disengagement, so as to enable the shutters to be opened, the operating-rod is pushed inward, causing the angular hooks to diverge at their catch ends, releasing the blindcatches. Then the operating-rod is released and the hooks c c return to their normal position, heilig held therein bythe spring and the stop-flange b of the case.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The shutter-fastening consisting of the connecting face-plate a, having the depending stop-tlange b, the laterally-opposed inwardly- 'turned hooks o c', pivoted to said plate, connected by the spring h, and having the horizontal inwardly-extending arms k k', one in front ot' the other, the notch-bearing lug l of the rear arm, and the operating-rod p, having a neck-channel to engage said notch-bearing lug, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of twq witnesses. i
RUSSELL G. DUDLEY.
