Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in steam generators and water heaters ofv the type having a boiler enclosing and permitting free circulation of a body of water.
It is the general aim of the invention to provide a steam generator or water heater of simplified construction, which can be easily and economically fabricated and installed and which will operate efliciently for an exceedingly long period and which will require little, if any, maintenance service during its entire life.
Other objects of the invention, as well as features of construction; will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description of the annexed drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of a steam generator or water heater constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken as indicated by line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the boiler removed from the firebox and taken as indicated by line 3-3 in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View through the boiler as indicated by line 4-4 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is an isometric view of the baffle tube and baffles lates utilized in the construction. 7 In each of the aforedescribed figures of the drawing, the reference numeral l0 designates a boiler which is supported in a generally horizontal position upon a firebox [2. A water chamber W is defined within the boiler l0 between the outer cylindrical shell l4 thereof and an inner cylindrical shell [6. The inner shell I6 is longer than the outer shell I4 and, in accordance with the present invention, is supported in eccentric relation to the outer shell by end plates [8, I8 welded or otherwise secured within the ends of the outer shell [4.
A walled opening or passageway 22 between the inner and outer shells is provided on the side of the boiler adjacent the front end thereof to permit the passage of hot gasses to and from the inner shell. The top wall 23 of the passageway is provided by bending the struck portion of the inner shell upwardly and welding the same to the upper marginal edge of the opening in the outer shell. The rear and bottom walls of the passageway 22 are provided by a plate 24 welded to the cut edges of the openings in the inner and outer shells. The front wall of the passageway 22 is provided by an insulating'liner on that portion of the front end plate l8 which is adjacent the said passageway.
The assageway 22 is in communication with a. flue 26 leading from the fire box 12. As will-be noted in Fig. 2, the fire box is lined with a suitable refractory 28, such as fire brick, so that a flame can be introduced therein from a conventional burner 30. The flame and hot gases produced thereby will heat the underside of the outer shell l4 and the hot gases will then pass upwardly in the flue 26 along the side of the boiler toward the passageway 22. The flue has an insulating liner 32, such as asbestos, to a point substantially at the midpoint of the passageway 22. The said passageway is divided by a horizontally disposed plate 34 welded to the rear wall 24 of the passageway and to the shell 36 of the fiue. Thus the baiile defines a gas inlet opening 38 so that the inner shell will receive hot gases from the fire box, said gases being introduced in the direction of the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2.
In further accord with the present invention, baffle means are provided within the inner shell 5 to circulate the gases therein to effectively heat said shell and the water chamber W. The baffle means includes a supporting tube 40 secured in concentric relation with the inner shell l6'with its ends abutting the heat insulating liners; 4.2, 42, provided on the inner faces of closure plates 44, 44.,located, respectively, on the endsof the inner shell. The tube 40 supports, as by welding to its outer periphery, a baffle 46 vwhich is disposed generally parallel to the axis of the tubeand which is inclined outwardly so that the outer edge of said bafile engages the inner edge 0f,, the flue bafile plate 34. Preferably, the baffles 34 and 46 are welded along their abutting edges. The baflie 46 extendsfrom the front end of the tube lengthwise thereof beyond the midpoint of the tube. At approximately the center of the tube 40, a transversely disposed plate 48 is welded to the tube and to the underside of baflle 46; As shown in Fig. 2, the transverse baffle 48 extends between the tube and the inner shell of the boiler and is approximately semi-circular in configuration. As will be apparent from the drawing, the baflles 46 and 48 direct the hot gases introduced at the flue inlet opening 38 downwardly and around thte tube 40 on the front half thereof. The gases then escape over the free end gases from passing completely over the tube and instead directs them downwardly at the rear half of the tube as shown in Fig. 4. The gases then pass upwardly and forwardly of the tube as a shown in Fig. 3 toward the passageway 22. That part of the passageway above the bafile 34 is designated by reference numeral 54 and defines a gas outlet opening to the flue which extends upwardly to a stack fitting 56 for the discharge of the flue gases.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that a boiler constructed in accordance with the present invention is adapted to circulate the heating gases internally of the water chamber to efiiciently heat the water contained therein. The eccentric arrangement of the shells provides for accelerated heating of the water in the lower portion of the boiler thereby causing water circulation to be quickly instituted. It will also be understood that blower means are unnecessary to effect gas circulation in the described manner. In each of bafiies 46,
48 and 52 gas vent openings 58 are provided to permit the escape of gas which might tend to build up in otherwise restricted areas. There is also provided a gas vent tube 60 extending from the top portion of the inner shell I6 through the outer shell it into the flue adjacent the stack fitting to permit the escape of gases which might be trapped within the inner shell.
It will be further understood that the boiler of this invention can be economically fabricated by welding the various elements and economy is further served by the elimination of flue pipes etc. which are costly in installation and which require frequent maintenance or replacement.
While one specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described,.it is not the intention to limit the scope of the invention except as indicated by the claims which follow.
I claim:
1. A boiler construction comprising a generally cylindrical outer shell, a pair of end plates closing the ends of said outer shell, a firebox supporting said outer shell in a substantially horizontal position, means defining a gas flue extending from said. firebox upwardly along the side of said outer shell, a generally cylindrical inner shell extending substantially horizontally between said end platesv in spaced relationship within said outer shell to define a water chamber therebetween, means defining a water tight gas duct between the interior of saidinner shell and said flue, a tube extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in spaced relationship within said inner shell, and bafile means extending completely across said flue and through said duct to said tube to separate said duct into a gas inlet passageway on the side of said bafile means adjacent the firebox and a gas outlet passageway on the opposite side of said baffle means whereby flue gases are directed into said inner shell and around said tube and returned to said fine.
2. A boiler construction comprising a generally cylindrical outer shell, a pair of end plates closing the ends of saidouter shell, a. firebox supporting said outer shell in a substantially horizontal position, means defining a gas fiue extending from saidfirebox upwardly along the side of said outer shell, a generally cylindrical inner shell extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in eccentrically spaced relationship within said outer shell to define a water chamber therebetween with the most restricted portion of said Water chamber disposed adjacent said firebox, means defining a water tight gas duct between the interior of said inner shell and sai'd'flue, a tube extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in spaced relationship within said inner shell, and baille means extending completely across said fiue and through said duct to said tube to separate said duct into a gas inlet passageway on the side of said baffle means adjacent the firebox and a gas outlet passageway on the opposite side of said baffle means whereby flue gases are directed into said inner shell and around said tube and returned to said flue.
3. A boiler construction comprising a generally cylindrical outer shell, a pair of end plates closing the: ends of said outer shell, a firebox supporting said outer shell in a substantially horizontal position, means defining a gas flue extending from said firebox upwardly along the side of said outer shell adjacent one of said end plates, a generally cylindrical inner shell extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in spaced relationship within said outer shell to define a water chamber therebetween, means defining a water tight gas duct between the interior of saidinner shell and said fiue, said last mentioned means including a portion of said inner shell bent generally radially outwardly and secured to said outer shell to provide one wall of said: duct and said one end plate providing anotherv wall of said duct, a tube extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in spaced relationship within said inner shell, andtbaflie means extending completely across saidfiue and through said duct to said tube to separate said duct-into a gas inlet passageway on the side of said baflie means adjacent the firebox and a gas outlet passageway on the opposite side'of said bafile means whereby flue gases are directed into'said inner shell and around said tube andreturned to said flue.

A boiler construction comprising a generally cylindrical outer shell, a pair of end plates closing the ends of said outer shell, a firebox supporting said outer shell in a substantially horizontal position, means defining a gas flue extending from said firebox upwardly along the side of said outer shell adjacent one of said end plates, a generally cylindrical inner shell extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in eccentrically spaced relationship Within said outer shell to define a water chamber therebetween with the most restricted portion of said water chamber disposed adjacent said firebox, means definin a watertight gas duct between the interior of said inner shell and said fiue, said last mentioned means including a portion of said inner shell bent generally radially outwardly and secured to said outer shell to provide one wall of the said duct and said one end plate providing another wall of said duct, a tube extending substantially horizontally between said end plates in spaced relationship within said inner shell, first baffle means extending completely across said flue and through said duct to said tube to separate said duct into a gas inlet passageway on the side of said bafile means adjacent the fire box and a gas outlet passageway on the opposite side of said baflie means, and second baflle means within said inner shell including a transversely disposed baffie plate extending between said tube and said inner shell and cooperating with said first bafile means to direct hot gases from said inlet passageway downwardly and then upwardly around said tube adjacent said one end plate, and a substantially horizontally disposed baffle plate included in said second bafile means extending between said end plates in spaced relationship to said transverse plate and cooperating therewith to direct gases from adjacent said one end plate downwardly and then upwardly around aid tube adjacent the other end plate and then into said outlet passageway.
