BOILER.
Application filed November My invention relates to boilers and has a particular reference to boilers used for heating buildings.
lhe object of my invention is to provide a. boilerI ot a simple and compact construction with a large heating surface and withk a very el'iicient utilization of the heat ot the burned gases.
For this purpose I use a cylindrical boiler o with a Firebox inside and with a concentric semicircular shell between the cylinder and the firebox, this shell containing several return passages for the liuc gases.
My invention is more fully described in the accompanying .specification and drawing` in which- Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of my boiler, Fig. V2 is a cross section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a plan view in section, Fig.
o 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, Fig.
5 is a front view, Fig. 6 is a rear view and.
Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic view of the passages for the exhaust gases, the boiler being shown developed on a. horizontal. plane.
My boiler consists of a cylindrical shell 1 with a cylindrical ireboX 2 inside. rlhis lircbox (or fire tube) has an enlargement 3 in the front part oi the boiler to provide an ash chamber .for the grates 4. Back of the :so grates a. wall 5 is placed to protect the steel shell 2.
In the space between the outer shellL 1 and the iire tube 2 a semicircular shell 6 is placed supported by the end plates 7 and 8 of the boiler. This shell communicates with the fire tube 2 in the rear b means of a tubular aperture or a short tu e 9 and is divided into several compartments by means of longitudinal walls .10 and 11. rl'he Walls 10 enclose a compartment or Hue 12. They are provided with apertures 13 in the front of the boiler (Fig. 7 which form a communication with compartments or 'Hues 14. The walls 11 have apertures 15 in the rear forming a communication with compartments or fines 16. The latter are provided with apertures 17 in the front formed by short tubes 18 and extending outside of the shell 1. The tubes 18 form a communication between the y Ilues 16 and outside flues 19 formed in the briclrwork 20. These fines 19 are separated by a wall 21 and extend to the rear of the boiler partly encircling the boiler 1 on the outside. At the rear they are cpnnected to;
19, 1.927. Serial No. 934,375.
the foundationfbriclrworlr 2O to the smoke stack (not shown).`
The semicircular shell 6 forms two concentric water chambers 23 and 24. They are connected together lat .the front `by a tube 25. A tube 26 extends above the boiler vand connects it with the main heating pipes 27 (shown with dotted lines). The return or cold water is fed into the boiler through a tlanged nipple 28 connected with the return pipe 29 (shown with dotted lines).
The boiler' is covered on the outside with a layer of heat insulating material 30. The openings in the rear arecovered with covers 31 and 32 provided with a heat insulating material 33 and 34, such as fire brick, tile or similar refractory material. An aperture with a cover 35 is provided for cleaning the boiler.
Openings in the front are closed with covers 3G and 37 attached with bolts 38. The cover 37 is provided with additional apertures closed with hinged doors 39, 40 and 41. The first two doors are used for inspectingthe tire, adding fuel and breaking the clinkers, and the door 41 is used for removing ashes.
Important advantages of my boiler are that it has a large heating surface therefore allowing a very rapid circulation of water, so that a much smaller boiler can be used for the same amount of heating required than would be the case with an ordinary type of a boiler; also that a very complete utili- Zation of the exhaust gases is obtained due to very long iiues inside of the boiler.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a boiler, the combination with an i outer cylindrical shell, of an inner cylindrical shell concentric with said outer shell, end plates at the ends of said outer shell supporting the ends of said inner shell, means to burn -fuel in the front end of said inner shell, an intermediate shell between said outer and said inner shell, the walls of said intermediate shell being concentric with the walls of said other shells and being supported by said end plates, said inner shell being semicircular in crossection and occu pying the upper portion of the space between said other shells, a tubular connection between the rear ends of said inner and intermediate shells, a plurality of longitudi-` nal partitions in said intermediate shell proat the front and at the rear of said shell, tubular connections between the lower portions of said intermediate shell, and a brickwork outside of said outer shell with ines connected with said last named tubular cons nections, said fines with all ot said tubular connections, spaces in said intermediate shell between said partitions and apertures in said partitions forming continuons passages for exhaust gases from the inside ot' said inner shell.
2. In a boiler, the combination vwith an outer cylindrical shell, ot an inner cylin` drical shell concentric with said outer shell, an enlargement in the trent end oi said inner shell, means to burn luel in said enlargement, a refractory briclwork hetweei'i said enlargement and the rear portion ot said inner shell, a seniieircnlar intermediate shell in the upper portion of the space between said outer and said inner shells, the walls of said intermediate shell being concentric with the walls of said outer and said inner shells, end plates attached to the ends of said outer shell and supporting the ends ot said inner and said intermediate shells, a tubular connection between said inner and said intermediate shells, a plurality of longitudinal 'partitions in said. interniediate shell provided with apertures arranged alternately at the front and at the rear, tubular connections between the lower portions of said intermediate shell and said outer shell, all oit said tubular connections, passages between said partitioi'ls and said apex tures in the partitions lforming continuous fines tor exhaust from inside oi said inner shell.
