HEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. Mnninrr, a
- citizen of theUnited States, residing at Dua heat aicurrent of air or water flowing lation chamber.
walls of said circulation chamber is a pasthrough passages therefor formed in the walls of the heater. With this and other ob jects in view, it consists of the structures, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my said invention. Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is a vertical central section on the line AB of Fig. 1, and on the line A B of Fig. 4. Fig. 4:, is a cross section on the line (3-D of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a vertical central section of the hereinafter described intermediate casting,
- upon the line EF of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, 1 is a base, preferably cast, provided with an ash door 1*, a draft door 1 and a passage 1 for grate shaking means, all of any suitable construction. Upon said base is mounted an intermediate casting 2 in which is formed a central fire chamber 2, a central fuel magazine 2*, de pending over said fire chamber, an air or water circulation and heating chamber 2 concentric with said fire chamber and magazine and extending in part over said fire chamber, and a plurality of vertically directed flues 2 positioned above said fire chamber and extending through said circu- Extending through the sage 2, for the frame 3 of a fire door 3 of any suitable structure, through which the interior of the fire chamber above the fuel bed may be reached for any desired purpose.
Surrounding the outer side wall of said circulation chamber and spaced therefrom is a casing 4, upon which a preferably cast cover 5 is supported at its circumference, said cover closely encircles the upper end of said magazine and is further supported by said magazine in any suitable manner, as by a collar 2 formed on the outer wall of the magazine. Said cover is spaced above the Patented Uct. 111, i921.
Applicationfiled October 10, 1919. Serial no. 329,675.
upper ends of said vertical lines, which fiues communicate with said space and thereby with the space between said casing and the outer wall of the circulation chamber. Smoke exhaust ports 6 and 6 extend through said casing, respectively near the upper and lower ends thereof, which ports are adapted to be connected in any suitable manner or by any suitable means (not shown) with a chimney, not shown. Said magazineextends through said cover and is provided at its upper end with a fuel hopper 7 of any suitable structure, which hopper is closed by a lid 7 of any suitable structure. Erected upon said cover and surrounding said hopper is a removable hood 8. Extending through said cover in alinment with said vertical fines are passages 9 covered by plates 9 through which passages access may be had to the vertical fines for cleaning the same. Any suitable form or structure of grate may be mounted in said base, as the grate 10. Water or air circulation pipes of any suitable number or structure as 11, 12, may extend through said casing and the outer wall of said circulation chamber whereby the heated air or water may be distributed to distant points and the cooled air or water returned to the circulation chamber of theheater.
In operation the chimney draft will be permitted to flow through the port 6 until the fire is well started whilethe port 6 will be closed by a suitable damper (not shown).
After the fire is well started the chimney draft will usually be permitted to flow through the port 6- while the port 6 is closed by a suitable damper (not shown). One of the important features of my invention is broadly the form structure and arrangement of said intermediate casting, whereby the walls of the central magazine, and of the fines formed thereon, and of the circulation chamber, and of the fire chamber may all be conveniently and cheaply formed in a single integral casting, and in such manner that a large area of circulation chamber wall is exposed to heat.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a heater, the combination with a suitable base, of an intermediate casting containing a fire chamber, a hard fuel reservoir depending into said fuel chamber, vertically extending radially disposed fines communicating with said fire chamber and open at their opposite ends, and a fluid conducting chamber surrounding said fire chamber and fines and magazine and extending between said fiues to the Wall of said fuel reservoir; a casing surrounding said fiuid conductin'g chamber and spaced therefrom, said casing having a smoke eX- haust port formed therein; a cover extending from said magazine to said casing, said cover being spaced fromsaid-flues, said fiues being adapted to communicate through said space -with said smoke exhaust port; a grate; and means for covering said magazine. r
2. An integral structure comprising a fire chamber and a fuel magazine communicatmg with sand chamber and a plurality of radiallydlsposed fiues extending parallel to said magazine and a fluid conducting cham ber surrounding said fire chamber and fluos, said fiues being exterior to said magazine, and the side Wall of said magazine being common to said fiues and to said fluid conducting chamber.
In'testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK V. MERRITT. Witnesses:
