Description

July 21, 1953 E. BERGMAN 2,645,735
INFANTS TOILET SEAT MOUNTING MEANS Filed June 25, 1950 INVENTOR. ED BERGMAN ATTORNEY Patented July 21 I953 'Ed Bergman, New York, N. Y., assignor to Kiddie Seat Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application wheres, 1950, Serial No. 169,961
. The present invention relatesto"adetachable hinge means for mounting an infants toilet seat in position to overlie the conventional adults toilet seat usually found' in a household toilet appliance.
As is well known, the bowl of the toilet inthe home lavatory or bathroom is provided with an adult seat and a top or COVBITfOITthB bOWI'," each of which maybe individually raised-or lowered to uncover either the seat or the bowl.
It has been customary tomount on such an adult toilet seat, a toilet seatforinfant'sin' such manner that it (the infants seat) ,may be placed in operative position on the adult toilet seat in which position the top orcover' may be'lowered to cover the bowl on which the infants-toilet seat may have been swung, orythe infant's toilet seat shall be operable so that it can be swung into inoperative position away from the'adult toilet seat against the raised topor cover.
Thus, it is desirable that thefinfants toilet seat shall at all times be free to be'swung clear of the adult toilet seat or onto it in suchmanner that it will not interfere withthe conventional manner in which the householdtoilet appliance is used and oneof the objects of this invention is to provide a mounting means for an infants toilet seat that is so constructed jand arranged that it will serve this purposei An example of an infants toilet-seat to which this invention may be applied is illustrated in Pat. No. 1,950,016,. granted to. S. G. Zuckerman on March 6,1934. 1
The present invention contemplates the provision of a fitting or connection which may be mounted under tension on a conventional adult toilet seat in such manner that an infants toilet seat secured thereon will be,operativelyjposi tioned to overlie the adultwtoil et seat in such manner that the operative -raising or lowering of the top or cover and theadult toilet-seat will not be interfered with Y The present invention contemplates theapro- Q vision of such an infant toilet seat fitting or mounting means so arranged and constructed that a hinge on which the infant toilet seat may be operatively swung into selected position is provided as an integral part of the said fitting or means.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be clear from the following description and the drawings appended thereto, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a toilet seat on 1 @GCla'ims. (01. 4-239) collapsed overlying position by control.
hinge means embodying my inventionand'with the top or cover to the bowl in raised position.
Fig. 2 is a side view of my detachable hinge means to an enlarged scale; I
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof with the rubber sleeve partially broken away to show the spring Fig. 4 is a rear view thereof, the rubber sleeve broken away and also showing in broken lines the seat element on which the hinge means is mounted.
Referring now to the drawings, the conventional toilet bowl which is not shown since it forms no part of the invention, is provided with the toilet seat In, illustrated in normal horizontal position on the bowl and onwhich seat l9 rests the infants toilet seat assembly 12 in overlying-position, an example of which is *the'in- "fants toilet seat'illustrated' in said PatnNo.
1,950,016 and the cover or top [4 of the toilet bowl.
It is understood of course that both the toilet seat Ill and the cover 14 are swingablymounted in the conventional toilet appliance in'to vertical position, such as that assumed by the cover M.
In the specification and the claims hereof, I shall refer to the front of my detachable hinge means and the toilet appliance on which it'is j trated in Fig. 2 is secured to the infant seat 16 '(see Fig. 2) by means of the Z member I8 which is riveted thereto. Afiixed to one, the front or forward one, of the elements of the Z member I8, I provide the adjusting screws 20 and 22 which extend through the slot 24 I 26 at the front thereof.
I of the socket plate The rear edge of the plate 26 is folded over upon itself to form asleeve 28 open at both sides, in which sleeve are positioned the ends" 30 and 32 continuin inwardly toward the center of my mounting means from the arms 34 and 36 by means of which, as I shall describe, the toilet seat assembly [2 is detachably mounted in position on the toilet appliance.
The ends 30 and 32 with the sleeve 28 form a hinge about which the infants toilet seat assembly i2 may be selectively swung into raised inoperative position against the top or cover I4 which an infants toilet seat assembly is held in 5 away from the adult toilet seat 10 or together the detachable into the arms 34 and 36, which are bent inwardly to form the catch members 1 48 and- 5 9. jlfhe member or tongue 52 which normally extends from the rear of the conventional toilet seat I0 is grasped by the catch members. and 50,w hich are urged against it by the spring 42 to hold in place the infant's toilet seat assembly ;l2 bymy mounting means.
In order to protect the spring 42, I preferably provide the rubber sleeve 54 in which the spring is positioned.
-Further, in order to permit readier mounting of my mounting means in the conventional toilet appliance, I preferably form the catch members .48 and50 of two parts, as illustrated, though it will be understood that a single member unbroken at the ends. 3lland 32 thereof may be used, in which case a material sufliciently resilient required.
It will now be recognized that I have provided amounting means by which an infants toilet seat may be,detachably secured on any conventional toilet appliance.
This mounting means forms a hinge on which the-infants toilet seat assembly may be selective- .ly swung into vertical inoperative raised position awayfrom the adult toilet seat or into horizontal operative position on the adult toilet seat.
..While I have shown and described a certain specific example of my invention, it will be understood that such example is-illustrative only and is not given as a limitation, since other modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the'art.
Hence, I do not intend to limit myselfthereto, but intend to claim my invention as broadlyas :may be permitted by the state of theprior art and-the-terms of the appended claims.
