1 Claim. (Cl. 248-226) This invention relates to a lamp bracket and more particularly to a bracket for attaching an electric lamp to a chair or the like.

The principal objects of the presentjnvention are to provide apparatus for resiliently embracing the back of a chair for holding a lam over the shoulder of the person using the chair; to provide a device of this character having means resiliently engaging the back of the chair and rotatable with respect to the lamp standard so that the lamp may be supported on either corner of the back of the chair suitable for the user; and to provide a device of this character simple and economical to manufacture.

Other objects of the present invention are to provide telescoping members having means on the ends for resiliently engaging the side of the back of the chair and one end of one of the telescoping members being pivotally mounted on the standard for the lamp and rotatable with respect thereto to provide mounting of the standard on the back of the chair.

In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. l is a perspective view showing my invention attached to the chair and the light on the left side thereof.

Fig. 2 is afragmentary perspective view of my invention showing the standard for attaching to the right side of the chair.

Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view particularly illustrating the resilient mounting of the fastening means engaging the chair back.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view particularly illustrating pivotal mounting of the telescoping members on the standard.

Referring more in detail to the drawings:

Fastening members 7 and 8 are provided for engaging the back of the chair and both are of identical structure and comprise tubular members 9 having one end flattened slightly as indicated at 10 (Fig. 3) and pivotally mounted by rivets 11 to a standard or base 12 for a lamp 13. Gripping members or jaws 14 are secured to the ends of the tubular members 9 and comprise rods or the like 15 having one end welded or otherwise suitably secured to the flattened end of the tubular members 9, and the other ends bent in the form of loops 16 to form the gripping members 14.

Adapted to engage in the tubular members 9 and be telescoped therein are rods 17 having their outer ends turned laterally as indicated at 18 and the ends also bent to form loops 19 providing gripping members or jaws 19' to engage the side 5 of the chair the same as the gripping members 14 engage the side 4 as shown in Fig. 1. United States Patent 0 'ice opening 20 is provided in the telescoping end of the rod 17 and adapted to engage said opening is one end of a coil spring 21 and the other end engaging the pin 11 as best illustrated in Fig. 4 for resiliently retaining the rod 17 in the tube 9 for exerting pressure on the fastening loops or grippers 19 and 14 respectively for holding the lamp in place on the chair.

The tubular standard 12 is provided with the usual bendable arm 22 and a cord 23 leads to an outlet (not shown) as is the usual practice.

In use of the invention constructed as described the telescoping members 9 and 17, respectively, are pulled outwardly until the gripping members 14 and 19', respectively, will engage the sides of the back of the chair and then the spring will exert pressure on each member to hold the bracket and lamp in place. When it is desired to use the lamp on the right side of the chair the fastening members are released and the tubular members 9 rotated on their pivots 11 so that they will extend in the opposite direction or in the position shown in Fig. 2 and then the gripping members are again engaged against the I side of the chair.

It will be obvious from the foregoing that l have provided an improved lamp bracket which may be adjusted for supporting a lamp on either side of the shoulder of the user as desired.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

Apparatus for supporting an electric lamp above one side of a chair by engagement with the side faces of the back of the chair comprising, a tubular standard for extending parallel with the corner of the back of the chair, the upper portion of the standard being positionable above said back and having a flexible end to which the lamp is attached for adjusting the lamp to various positions above the chair, an electric cord for the lamp extending through said tubular standard and said flexible end, spaced tubular members for extending partially across the back of the chair and each having a flattened portion at oneend thereof and provided with an opening, said standard having openings spaced longitudinally thereof, a pin extending through the opening in the flattened portion of each of the tubular members and said standard for pivotally mounting the tubular members on the standard, a gripping member extending from said one end of each of the tubular member and being turned laterally forming a gripping portion for engaging one side face of the chair back, rods, each having one end telescopingly engaging a respective tubular member, the free end of each rod being turned laterally and forming a gripping member for engaging the other side face of the back of the chair, a coil spring within each of said tubular members, one end of each spring being secured to the pin pivotally mounting its respective tubular member on said standard, and means securing the other end of each spring to the inner end of the telescoping rod in its respective tubular member, whereby rotation of said tubular members and said rods on said pins securing said members to the standard to extend the same outwardly from the opposite side of said standard said lamp may be mounted on the other side of said chair.
