BED LAMP Filed Feb. 18, 1932 I INVENTOR Q/SEPHL ,JrET/VE/fi.

Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED-STATES 'PATENTV' OFFICE JOSEPH L. STETNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK BED LAMP 7 Application filed February 18, 1932. Serial 1%;593521.
This invention relates to portable electric lighting devices and more particularly to that type of device known as bed lamps.
It is the object of the invention to improve the construction and operation of lamp shades of bed lamps.
Bed lamps as generally constructed include a lamp shade and supporting or suspending means usually engageable over the upper edge of the head member of a bed. In most such devices with which I am familiar, the supporting or suspending member is rigidly attached to the shade frame. This construction, however, has many disadvantages among the most prominent of which are first, the rigid attachment of the supporting or suspending member prevents free ad ustment of the shade, and secondly it renders awke ward packing such a lamp for shipment.
A feature of the invention resides 1n a novel construction whereby the suspension or supporting member may be readily attached to and detached from the shade.
A further feature of the invention resides in pivotally attaching the supporting or suspending member to the shade in a manner to permit of free swinging movement of the shade without subjecting the shade or suporting member to strain.
Still a further feature of the invention resides in a minimum of parts and the provision of a construction whereby, even when the supporting member is detached from the shade, there are but two parts.
Other features of the invention reside in the novel construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim, the nature of which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective new of a bed showing a lamp constructed in accordance with the present invention Figure 2 is a perspective view on an en larged scale of the shade and its supporting means, the latter being shown detached from the former,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation IQReferring specifically to the drawing, the "shade frame which may be of any desired free end of the Figure -5.
showing the supporting member attached to the shade, 1
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation, showing the supporting member in dot'and' dash lines in the position which it occupies when the shade is-packed for shipment, and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 55 of" Figure 3, the same being on an type is designated A, the supporting, member being designated B. I 7
In the'present embodiment of the. invention, the supporting member B comprisesa straight portion 10, and curved end portions '11 which latter terminate in outwardly disposed straight extremities 12. This supportingmember is formed from springy material preferably spring wireof such nature that the curved end portions may be bent toward each other within certain limitations without permanent distortion of the supporting member. i 1
The shade A" is preferably of rigid construction, and means is rigidly carried thereby to provide for attachment and detachment of the supporting' member relatively to the shade A. 1 As herein illustrated this means consistsof two spaced bearing members 13Yrigidly secured to one of the members of-theshade frame A preferably by spot Welding designated 1 1 in Figure 5. i W
Each of these bearing members is in the form of an ear-like member of elongated or rectangular form having a body portion 15 and a portion 16 rolled orturned thereunder to form a bearing. The body portions 15,..-
provide for the attachmentof the bearing 0 members to the shade frame in such manner that the bearing 16 of each member projects rearwardly'of the shade frame.
In forming the bearing members .16, the,
body portion is bent or-rolled thereunder as heretofore stated and in so doing it is so positioned that it engages that member of the :shade frame to which the bearing members are attached as 'at-18 in thereof and by the exertion of slight pressure,
move them toward each other which action withdraws the straight extremities 12 from their respective bearing members 13, the nawill permit of insertion of the extensions in the bearing members of the frame and release of the flexed arms will position the extensions within the bearing members to attach the support to the frame.
Signed at 277 Broadway, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 16th day of February A; D. 1932.
V JOSEPH L. STETN ER.
ture of the material from which the supporting member is constructed permitting of this operation without permanent distortion of the supporting member 13. To attach the supporting member, the curved portions 11 are grasped and moved towards each other until the straight extremities may be inserted in the bearing members 13. If now the curved members 11 be released, the resiliency of the material from whichthe supporting member is formed will act to move the straight extremities 12 into their respective bearing members 13; g V
, In packing the shade for shipment, the supporting member B is removed from the shade frame A in the manner heretofore described and placed within the shade frame as illustrated in dot and dash lines in Figure 4 inwhich position it is protected against damage as often results When the supporting member is, rigidly attached to the shade frame.
From the foregoing it will be readily ap parent that thepresent inventionprovides a new and novel construction of bed lamp in which a supporting member is removably attached toa lamp shade frame and in which a shade frame is freely suspended from its supporting member. 7
Whilei'the invention has been herein illustrated in its preferred form, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific construction shown and that it may be practiced in other forms which fall within the purview of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s: Y l
A lamp shade and support therefor comprising a shade frame, a pair of spaced bearing members rigidly carried by the shade frame, said support comprising a member having abody portion, a curved resilient arm projecting from each endof-said body portion, andan extension projecting-from each of said arms, said extension projecting in opposite directions whereby a flexing of the resilient arms in a direction towards each other
