Description

July 7, 1953 J. c. qAsEY PALATE SUPPORTLFQR SMOKERS PIPES Filed June-B, 1951 uvwszvrozg 7 John W Casey Patented July 7, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PALATE SUPPORT FOR SMOKERS PIPES John 0. Casey, San Francisco, Calif.
Application June 8, 1951, Serial No. 230,655
This invention relates to improvements in a palate support for smokers pipes.
The principal object of this invention is to provide mean for attaching to a smokers pipe a supporting element which will contact the roof of the mouth so as to act as a support for the pipe, thus relieving the necessity of biting the stem between the teeth and to relieve some of the jaw tension thereby.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which may be readily attached to any ordinary pipe.
line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the I line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of my device; and
Fig. 5' is a perspective view on a reduced scale, showing my devic in use in a pipe.
The ordinary pipe used by a smoker consists of a stem, together with a bowl, both of which project a considerable distance out of the mouth and therefore there is an appreciable leverage between the teeth which tendsto push the lower jaw inwardly, and, consequently, considerable muscular effort must be exerted in order to keep the pipe in a substantially horizontal position.
Applicant has devised a palate support which projects backwardly into the mouth a sufiicient distance to counteract the leverage so that the lower jaw merely has to support the weight of the pipe, which is comparatively small.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a stem engaging portion having downwardly struck resilient tongues 6 and 1 and a palate engaging grooved, flared portion 8.
2 Claims. (Cl. 131228) With this construction it is possible to push pushed in against the tongues, thus loosening them from the bottom of the bore.
In th modified form shown in Fig. 4, the stem engaging portion is shown at I2 and is provided with screw threads so that it may be secured into a pipe or removed therefrom as desired. This threaded portion is split so as to provide resilient portions I3 and 14, the purpose of which is obvious.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that variou changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A palate support for smokers pipes, com- I circular cross section, conforming to the interior wall of pipe bore for bearing against'a portion of the bor of a pipe, said stem-engaging portion having resilient members connected thereto and 7 bearing against the opposite side of the bore of the pipe from the curved portion, said resilient members extending rearwardly toward the free end of the stem and a curved upwardly, flared palate-engaging portion having an upwardly convex palate-engaging surface rigidly secured to said stem-engaging portion.
JOHN c. CASEY.
