This invention relates to improvements in a combined chin rest and pipe support for use in smoking tobacco. Primarily, the 1nvent-ion resides in assisting the smoker in holding the tobacco pipe, cigar holder or cigarette holder as the case may be.

In smoking a pipe of tobacco it IS fIQ- quently observed that considerable strain 1s imposed upon the smoker by reason of the weight of the pipe and tobacco when the mouthpiece is held in the teeth. In this position the weight of the bowl of the p1pe and its contents is suspended at the long end of a leverage which is most unfavorable to the 5 smoker. The weight must be supported by a firm gripof the teeth and lips at the small end of the mouthpiece. As a consequence the muscles of the jaw and face are required to be constantly tense and no relaxation is possible.

The same condition exists where a cigar or cigarette is held in the end of a holder WlllCh in turn is held between the teeth of the smoker. Y

An object of my invention is the provision of novel means by which the smoker is relieved of the necessity of supporting the entire weight of the pipe or cigar holder by the unfavorable leverage obtainable at the 1 mouthpiece.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a device which may be fitted expeditiously to pipe stems, cigar holders or cigarette holders or even to the cigars or cigarettes themselves.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel adjustment of a support for smokers articles in which the leverage of the support may be varied at will.

A still further object of my invention is to provide that this support may be conveniently adjusted to rest against the chin of the smoker in whatever posltion he may find it most comfortable.

By way of example I have illustrated my invention as supporting the stem of a tobacco pipe 1. The support is accomplished by means of a saddle 2 semi-circular in crosssection and made of metal or other convenient material. The saddle is curved upwardly to include the perforated ears 3, 3.

A resilient helical spring or like member 4 is attached by means of terminal hooks to the perforations in the ears 3, 3. In this manner the opening in the saddle may be varied to receive pipe stems or cigar holders in different diameters and to hold them frictionally against accidental movement.

contact between the joint 6 and the bar 5 is also suificiently tight to provide enough friction to maintain the parts in adjusted position without danger of relative displace-. ment. It is intended that this adjustment be made by the 'smokers fingers whenever desired.

The joint 6 forms one end of a bar 8 which is screw threaded at its opposite end 9. An adjusting collar 10 is movable along the screw-threaded end9 and itself is externally screw-threaded at oneend 11'. 7,

An angle piece 12 is provided with a hollow end 13. This end is internally bored and threaded as indicated at 14, to receive the rest is immediately converted into a port by bending the rod 8 around the screw-threaded end 11. of the adjusting nut 10.

A supporting block 17 is rovided with a restricted collar 18 and ahol ing flange 19 as indicated in Fi 3. This block'may be of rubber, artificia resins or similar thermoplastic materials. he assembly of the above structural details provides for a chin rest to be used in the manner shown in Fig. 1 by the smoker as indicated by the numeral 21. The stem of the tobacco pipe, or of the cigar holder or smoking tube for a cigarette is easily adjusted within the saddle tube by means of the helical spring 4. The joint 6 is bent around the bar 5 to bring the rod 8 in line with the smokers chin and the nut 10 adj usted to bring the cupped block 17 conveniently against the smokers chin when the mouthpiece of the pipe is held between his teeth.

In this arrangement the smoker may rely upon the chin rest to maintain the pipe at a satisfactory angle without throwing this burden upon the teeth or lips. In this way the muscles of the jaw and face may remain substantially relaxed.

It is also to be noted that the adjustment may provide for the bowl of the pipe to be slightly depressed and thus prevent the undesirable fiow of moisture or tar into the mouthpiece. In this way a cool dry smoke is insured.

Whenever the smoker desires to take the I pipe or the like away from his mouth the chin supjoint 6 by the fingers until the position shown in Fig. 2 is reached. The pipe may thereupon be supported upon a level table 22 or the like by means of the block 17 and thus the pipe left in convenient position to be picked up whenever desired. Also such a support prevents the still burning pipe, cigaror cigarette from coming into contact with the table top or other articles which might be burned or cause fires.

The above description and illustration is based upon the preferred form of my invention but variations may be made in minor details and proportions without departing from the scope/of the invention as set out in the following claims.

What I claim is: 1. In combination, an article holder, a bar pivoted to said holder, a sleeve threaded on the free end of the bar, a bifurcated angle member threaded on the sleeve and a supporting block carried by said bifurcated angle member. 1

For use in combination with a tobacco pipe or the like, a saddle for the stem of the pipe, stem retaining means on the saddle, an arm dependlng from the saddle, a bar frictionally pivoted to the arm, a supporting block, and means carrying the block on the bar, said means being adjustable to bring the supporting block to rest on the smokers chin substantially beneath the mouthpiece of the p pe or beneath the center of gravity of the pipe when the latter is supported on a horizontal surface.
