GARBAGE CAN HOLDER Filed Oct. 21, '1948 Inventor Hoy A. Wel/er Patented Apr. 11V, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARBAGE CAN HOLDER Roy A. Welter, Grand Forks, N. Dak.
Application October 21, 1948, Serial No. 55,768
l 2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to improvements in garbage can holders for the usual garbage cans of commerce.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive device for holding such cans elevated off the ground so that the same cannot be upset, nor the lids knocked off and garbage strewn around the premises, by marauding animals, while at the same time the tops of the cans are within easy reach for disposing garbage therein and the cans may be easily removed from the holder for emptying or other purposes.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved garbage can holder in the preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is a view in plan of the same;
Figure 3 is a View in perspective of a modied embodiment of my invention;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3 and drawn to a larger scale.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, and first to Figures 1 and 2 illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, I designates the holder, as a unit, and which embodies a center post, or upright, 2 designed to be driven, part Way, or otherwise embedded in the ground, or set in cement, to maintain the same in upright position. The post, or upright 2 may be formed of any light, strong, inexpensive material, such as commercial pipe of a suitable diameter for the purpose.
A duplicate pair of skeleton can holding frames 3 are provided at diametrically opposite sides of the upper portion of the post, or upright 2. The frames 3 comprise a, pair of annular top members 4 of rigid wire and of a size suitable for receiving therein the conventional garbage can 5 of a given size, shown in broken lines in Figure 1, said members 4 extending horizontally in a common p'lane, in diametrical alignment, from opposite sides and the top of the post, or upright 2, and being spot welded, as at 6, to the bottom face of a crown plate 'I spot welded, as at 8, to said post, or upright 2 on top thereof.
A pair of U-shaped, rigid wire, frame members 9 laterally bent intermediate the ends IU thereof are spot welded, as at II, at the be'nds I2 of the same to opposite sides of the post,y or upright 2 at a, suitable point below the top members 5 to form pairs of bottom can rests I3 for the frames 4 diverging in each pair from the post, or upright 2 and from which the ends I 0 f of the frame members 9`extend upwardly to the top members 4 and are welded thereto, as at I4, with said ends disposed upon opposite sides of the median plane of the holder.
A pair of chains I5 may be attached in any suitable manner to the top members 4 within hooks I6 for catching in the handles I'I of the garbage cans 5to hold said cans in said frames 3.
A lug I8 is suitably fixed on the post, or upright 2 to extend laterally therefrom and be sunk in the ground, or cement, to the level of the surface thereof. The lug I8 provides against turning of the post, or upright 2 in the ground, or cement, and is fixed to said post, or upright 2 at a predetermined distance below the frames 3 to provide a gauge so that when the same is level with the surface of the ground, or cement, the height of the frames 3 from the ground is the same as the distance between said frames and lug. This is of particular advantage in providing for the holders I being used to elevate the garbage cans 5 at a, predetermined distance above the ground.
As will be seen, the preferred embodiment of the invention is, substantially, a duplex garbage can holder in which a pair of the garbage cans 5 tend to balance the post, or upright, 2 so that the same will not become tipped under the weight of the contents of the cans.
The modified embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 is a single can holder comprising a tubular upright I8, formed of a suitable length of pipe, with a crown angle plate I9 spot welded, as at 2E), on its upper end, and a similar plate 2I similarly attached to its lower end, said plates I9, 2li being provided with nail holes 22 for nailing said plates, as shown in Figure 4, to a wall 23, or the like, to attach the upright I8 thereto.
A can holding frame 24 like the frames 3 is provided on the upright I8 to extend forwardly therefrom, with reference to the wall 23, said frame 24 being like the frames 3 in that it comprises an annular top frame member 25 spot welded, as at 26, to the crown plate I9, and also to the upright I3. Bottom can rests 26, like the rests I3, are spot welded to the upright I8 at corresponding ends thereof, as at 21, with the other ends thereof upturned and secured to the annular top member 25 in the same manner as the ends I0 of the frame members 9 of the preferred embodiment of the invention. As will be understood, the rests 26 diverge relatively from the upright I8 and said rests 26 and the ends 2U thereof have the form of rigid wire frame members.
The described modied embodiment of the invention is designed to be attached to the wall 23 at any desired elevation above the ground.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufce to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modcation, Without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a holder for a garbage can, an upright adapted to be arranged in fixed position, and a skeleton can holding frame extending laterally from one side of the upright comprising an annular top member xed to said upright to extend horizontally therefrom, and a pair of bottom can rest members diverging horizontally from said upright and terminating in upturned ends xed to said top member upon opposite sides oi the median plane of the holder.
2. In a holder for garbage cans, an upright adapted to be driven partway into the ground,
and a pair of skeleton wire can holding frames attached to said upright upon diametrically opposite sides thereof for elevating a pair of the cans above the ground in a position to balance the upright against tipping under the weight of the contents of the cans, said frames comprising a pair of annular upper frame members extending horizontally in a common plane from opposite sides of the upright, and a pair of U-shaped frame members secured intermediate the ends thereof to opposite sides of the upright and bent to provide pairs of horizontal can rests for the frames diverging in the pairs from said upright with the ends of the U-shaped frame members upstanding and secured in pairs to the top frame members upon opposite sides of the median plane of the holder.
