2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in garbage can holders and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a construction and arrangement which is such that tipping over of a garbage can by dogs, the wind, prowlers, etc., will be positively prevented.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a garbage can holder of the aforementioned character embodying novel clamping means, said clamping means also functioning as a medium for opening the can when released.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the character described which may be expeditiously adjusted to accommodate cans of different heights.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a garbage can holder of the character set forth which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational View of a holder constructed in accordance with the present invention with a garbage can mounted therein, the concrete foundation being shown in vertical section.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the device, taken at right angles to Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a view principally in vertical section through the clamp structure, showing a portion of the garbage can lid secured thereto,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Fig, 6 is a detail view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is a detail view in top plan of the clamping arm.
Fig. 8 is a detail view in elevation of the ratchet which releasably secures the clamping arm in operative position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of crossed bars I of suitable metal having downturned supporting legs 2 on their ends. At their lower ends, the supporting legs 2 terminate in inturned feet 3 which are anchored in a concrete foundation 4, Secured, as by welding, on the ends of the bars I and rising above said bars is a metallic band or ring 5. The elements I, 2, 3 and 5 constitute a base structure which is designated generally by the reference numeral 6. The base 6 is adapted to receive a conventional garbage can, as at l. The reference numeral 8 designates the usual removable lid of the garbage can I.
, Rigidly secured, as by welding, in diametrically opposite sides of the ring 5 and rising therefrom are posts 9 and It) in the form of bars of suitable metal. The post ID has adjustably mounted on its upper end portion an extension II. The post In and the extension II have formed therein spaced openings l2 which are adapted to be selectively brought into registry with each other for receiving bolts l3 for securing said extension H in adjusted position. Adjustably secured in a similar manner on the upper end portion of the post 9 is an extension I4. The reference numeral l5 designates a metallic clamping arm having one end hingedly secured, as at 16, on the upper end of the extension II for swinging movement in a vertical plane. The lid 8 of the garbage can 1 is bolted to the arm I5 at an intermediate point, as at ll. At its free end, the arm l5 terminates in a handle l8 (see Fig. '7). Adjacent the handle l8 the arm l5 has formed therein an opening 19. At its upper end, the extension It terminates in a ratchet bar 20 which is 'engageable in the opening IQ for releasably securing the arm I5 in clamping posie tion.
It is believed that the manner in which the device functions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. The can I is adapted to rest on the crossed supporting bars I within the ring 5. When the arm I5 is swung downwardly and engaged with the ratchet 20,
the lid 8 is secured firmly in position on the can simply lifting said can sufficiently to clear the ring 5 and then moving said can in a horizontal plane from between the posts 9 and ID. The adjustable connections between the elements l0 and II' and 9 and I4 permit the device to be con? veniently used with cans of different heights.
It is believed that'the many advantages of a garbage can holder constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, itis, to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: 1. A holder of the class described comprising a base structure adapted to receive and support a garbage can, posts rising from thebase structure, an arm hingedly mounted on the upper end portion of one of the posts, a lid for the can mounted on said arm, and means for detachably securing the arm to the other post for securing the lid on the can and for securing said can on the base structure.
2. A holder of the class described comprising a base structure adapted to receive and support a garbage can, posts rising from the base structure, an arm hingedly mounted on the upper end of one of the posts, a lid for the can mounted on said arm, the arm having an opening in its free end portion, and a ratchet on the upper end portion of the other post engageable with the arm in the opening for releasably securing said arm in position across the garbage can.
