The invention relates to improvements in garbage can'holders and protectors, and more, particularly to an improved standf designed to support one or more garbage cans, which stand is equipped with an upright post having one or more lateral bracket arms equipped with means for supporting one or more garbage can lids either in a lowered closed position upon the can,

or in a raised open position.

Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, reference numeral I denotes generally a base for a garbage can H, which base carries an upright tubular post l2. A sleeve I3 is slidably mounted upon the base and is held in adjusted position by a collar l4 and set screw I 5. The adjustment enables the device to be used with cans of various heights.

At the top of the post I2 is a cap member l having a flange l6, which cap limits the upward movement of the sleeve l3 and also provides a rest for the handle of the can top when the same is in raised position as indicated in Fig. 1.

At a suitable distance from the sleeve a bolt is provided extending throughthe two lateral arms and providing the pivot for a hinged bracket member 19 which carries the can top 29. The bracket {9, comprises an upper flat strap member 2! and a lower strap member 22 coacting with the member 2! to support the can top therebetween. As shown, the lower strap member 22 is provided with an offset portion 23 to receive the hinge member i8 and is also provided with a large loop 24 spaced from the ofiset portion 23, which loop embraces the inside of the can rim, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and the strap 22 is provided with a fiat end portion 25 which, when the parts are assembled, extends parallel with the upper strap 2!. Bolts 26 and 21 extend through straps 2i and 22 and through the can top 20.

The can support in is. of open construction for sanitary purposes. As shown, this support includes an open ring or rim member 39 which is provided with cross members 3!, 32, upon which the bottom of the can rests so that the Weight is supported by said crossed strips. The member 30 is provided with a pair of legs 33 and 34 at opposite sides thereof, and the member 32 is secured at one end to the ring 30 and at the other end is provided with a leg 35 so that the device as a whole is supported upon the three legs 33, 34 and 35, thus insurin a three-point support which prevents tilting so that the device is adapted for use on any surface.

The upright post !2 carrying the sleeve i3 is supported in a socket 36 on the end of the strap 32 remote from the ring 30.

In operation the sleeve 13 is adjusted to fit a can of any height. The lid 28, when in closed position, is securely held so that there is no danger of accidental removal, as by stray dogs or the like. It may, however, be readily pulled up, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position the handle All of the can top rests upon the top of the cap member lfi of the post l2. It will be noted that in the raised position the can top 25 is tilted rearwardly owing to the fact that bolt 13 is removed from the upright post a distance greater than the depth of the can top. When in the raised position there is no tendency for the can top to drop into closed position until positively moved by hand, which, however, is an easy operation.

The construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is similar to that previously described except that the stand Ill is equipped for holding two cans II' and I I resting on openwork bottoms composed of intersecting strips 3| and 32'. Cross members 50 and 51 connect the two parts of the stand which is likewise equipped with parallel side members 52 and 53.

The upright post I2 is mounted at the intersection of the cross members 50 and 5!. The sleeve l3 ha arms 60 which extend both ways from the center sleeve l3 and these arms are equipped with two brackets l9, l9, one at each end, which brackets are similar to the bracket l9 in the previously described embodiment of the invention. These hinged arms l9, l9 are secured to two can tops 20', either or both of which may be moved to the raised position shown in full lines at the left in Fig. 5, or may be moved to the closed position shown in full lines at the right in Fig. 5, and in dotted lines at the left of Fig. 5.

The invention has been described in detail for the purpose of illustration, but it will be obvious that numerous modifications and variations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. A combined support and cover for a garbage can or the like, comprising a stand having a circular rim for receiving the bottom of the can, an upright post supported by said stand and spaced from the rim, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said post below the top thereof having a lateral arm, and a top for the can hingedly carried by said lateral arm and adapted to rest upon said can when in closed position or to be tilted rear wardly to rest upon the top of the post when in open position, said stand including an open framework underlying the rim upon which the weight of the can is supported, one of said frame members forming the base for said upright post, a pair of legs underlying the rim at opposite sides thereof, and a third leg underlying the upright post.

2. A combined support and cover for a garbage can or the like, comprising a stand having a circular rim for receiving the bottom of the can, an upright post supported by said stand and spaced from the rim, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said post below the top thereof having a lateral arm, and a top for the can hingedly carried by said lateral arm and adapted to rest upon said can when in closed position or to be tilted rearwardly to rest upon the top of the post when in open position, said stand having a pair of legs underlying said rim, and a third leg underlying the upright post. p

3. A combined garbage can and cover support comprising a stand having a pair of circular rims for receiving the bottoms of a pair of cans, an upright post supported by said stand intermediate said rims, a sleeve adjustably mounted on said post below the top thereof and having a pair of oppositely extending lateral arms carried thereby, and cover supporting means hingedly carried by said lateral arms adapted to be moved to their horizontal or upright positions.
