United States Patent 3,288,305 GARBAGE CAN HOLDER Floyd C. Bryant, 4842 Gilmore Drive, and William F. Teal, 4009 Seaforth Ave., both of Charlotte, N.C. Filed Oct. 13, 1965, Ser. No. 495,525 1 Claim. (Cl. 211-71) This invention relates to a garbage can holder for elevating a plurality of garbage cans from an underlying surface in Order to prevent animals and pets from gaining access thereto.
Garbage can holders are known to the prior art to elevate garbage cans for similar purposes as that explained, and are usually made with an upstanding post provided with a transverse circular support on which a garbage can may be rested. These types of garbage can holders are not particularly suitable when it is designed to preclude an animal from reaching such a garbage can, since there are usually no means provided for stationarily securing the garbage can to the support.
It is a primary object of the instant invention to provide a garbage can holder for supporting at least one garbage can from an underlying surface in which the can is releasably secured against being knocked over.
Still another object of the instant invention is to provide a compact garbage can holder which may be cheaply manufactured, readily assembled and installed, and which is neat and unobtrusive in appearance.
Still another object of the instant invention is to provide a garbage can holder including a substantially upstanding post receiving a closed handle of the garbage can and also including a transverse member forming at least one groove receiving the lower edge of the garbage can, the post and the transverse member cooperating to retain the garbage can in a substantially vertical position.
A further object of the instant invention is to provide a garbage can holder having an elongate central upstanding support having a lower end imbedded into an underlying surface, the lower end 'being provided with means to prevent inadvertent rotation of the holder.
A still further object of the instant invention is to provide a garbage can holder of the type described including a transverse load supporting member which may be reciprocated vertically along a supporting column to accommodate garbage cans of varying sizes.
Other objects and advantages of the instant invention, as well as the invention itself, resides in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts and features of construction and utilization, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawing wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein like reference characters designate like elements throughout the several views thereof, there is indicated generally at 1li a garbage can holder imbedded in an underlying supporting strata 12 and carrying a pair of garbage cans designated generally at 14. lGarbage cans 14 are of a conventional type and include an inverted truncated conical garbage retaining wall 16 pivotally carrying a pair of oppositely disposed handles 18 which are formed as U- shaped loops to be received about can holder 1t). Closing the underside of garbage retaining Wall 16 is a circular bottom wall to which is secured a closed peripheral rim 20 extending below the bottom wall. Closing the upper end of garbage can 14 is a lid 22 forming a conventional U-shaped handle 24. It should be understood that garbage can 14 may be of any conventional type, the only requirements necessary for utilization with the garbage can holder of the instant invention being a rim projecting beneath a portion of a bottom wall and a closed handle for receiving holder 10 as will be more fully explained hereinafter.
Garbage can holder 10 has as its major components an elongated substantially straight support designated generally at 26, a transverse member shown generally at 28 forming a groove 30 on each side of support 26 and a connecting means shown generally at 32 securing support 26 and transverse member 28 together.
In order to accommodate garbage cans of varying height, transverse member 28 may be moved along support 26 and secured thereto by connecting means 32 at any convenient position. Connecting means 32 includes a bolt having a male threaded portion 42 received in female threads in transverse member 28 communicating with opening 40. Connecting means 32 is provided with a suitable head 44, which is illustrated as square, for tightening male threads 42 in transverse member 28 to tixably secure support 26 therein. It should be apparent that the outward threadable movement of connecting means 32 will release transverse member 28 from support 26 allowing for reciprocable sliding movement to accommodate larger or smaller garbage cans.
Although lower end 36 of support 26 may be imbedded in an encircling concrete plug for purposes of permanence and stability, it has been found that anti-rotation device 38 provides additional bearing area precluding inadvertent rotation or tipping of support 26. Anti-rotation device 38 is illustrated as a diamond-shaped plate 46 of considerably larger size than support 26 secured thereto in any conventional manner, such as by welding or the like. It will be seen that the attempted rotation of sup- 3 port 26 results in plate 46 being pressed against the adjacent soil. Although FIGURES 1 and 4 indicate that only one plate 46 is being provided, it should be understood that a pair of plates disposed perpendicular to transverse member 28 may Vbe provided to preclude tipping as well as rotation of support 26.
Referring now to FIGURES 5 and 6, another form of anti-rotation means is indicated generally at 48 which is made by mashing together opposite sides of tubular support 26 to form a portion having an enlarged area when viewed in front elevation. It will be seen that the attempted rotation of support 26 carrying anti-rotation device 48 will be quite difficult because of the at nature thereof.
In the installation of garbage can holder 10, it is necessary to imbed support 26 in load supporting strata 12 in any conventional manner with either of anti-rotation devices 38, 48 being used to provide a more stable foundation. Transverse member 28 may be inserted over upper end 34 of support 24 and slidably moved downwardly with connecting means 32 being tightened to provide a stable platform for the bottom of garbage cans 14.
To position garbage cans 14 on can holder 10, it is necessary to lift it until handle 18 may 'be received by upper end 34 of support 24 and then allowing can 14 to come to rest on transverse member 28 with groove 30 receiving peripheral rim 20. Because of the frusto-conical nature of garbage can 14, groove 30 is positioned a small distance away from support 26 to hold the longitudinal axis of can 14 in a vertical position. It will be readily apparent that garbage cans 14 are, in reality, releasably secured to garbage can holder rather than merely being positioned thereon.
It is now seen that there is herein provided an improved garbage can holder having all of the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
Since many embodiments may be made of the instant inventive concept, and since many modifications may be made of the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that the foregoing is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
A garbage can holder comprising a substantially straight cylindrical support adapted to be positioned upright in an underlying surface, the upper end of the support being free from obstructions for receiving the handle of a garbage can;
a pipe segment, of larger diameter than the support and transverse thereto, having a central circular opening transverse to the axis of the segment receiving the support, the pipe segment having a substantially straight groove spaced on each side of the central opening, the grooves facing generally upwardly for receiving the lower edge of a garbage can, the grooves being spaced a sufficient distance from the central opening to accommodate the lower edge of a frustoconical garbage can having the lower end smaller than the upper end; and
means adjustably securing the pipe segment to the support.
