Application March 25, 1917, Serial No. 737,188
.7 t l i My inventionrelates toreels and more particularly to a reel that may be used to support a :sl'rein of: yarn or the like.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a conyenient adjustable reel that is equipped with a plurality: of projecting. arms which. may be equally expanded or retrieved with but a'single' adjustment means. a i,
Another object of my invention is to provide a device :of the character described that may be placed on any horizontal surface, and be constructed in amanner so it will occupy a minimum of space when stored. r.
A further object of my invention isv to provide a device that will revolve with a minimum amount of frictional resistance and may be actuated in a rotary fashion by a pulling action on fromv the skein disposed A still further object of my invention is to provide a device that is economical to construct, easy to operate and adjust, one that is efficienti'n performing the function for which it is intended.
*- 'It-is manifest to anyone familiar with yarn orthe like that the product is put up in skeins of various sizes and it is my intention to provide a device that may be easily adjusted for supporting any size of skein of yarn or the like, so as to permit the yarn to be relayed from the skein arrangement to a ball or the like for use.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds and when taken in conjunction with the drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the assembled device showing the projecting arms in a retrieved or folded position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the upper portion of the vertical standard.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the assembled device as shown in Figure 1, showing the projecting arms in an expanded position, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the lower portion of the vertical standard in its relation with the base and lower hinge plate.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, the device is provided with a base shown as which is arranged forplacing on any horizontal surface. Obviously, the device may also be supported by a clamp, the arrangement of the mounting does not in any way effect its operativeness. There is a vertical stem or standard shown as II which is shown having an upper thread I2 and a lower thread 1 Claim. (01. 242-127) p the lower portion of z 13. The lower thread [3 of the vertical stem II is threadedly engaged into a lower hingeplate shown as I. This hinge plate i4 is provided'wi'th a plurality of sockets l5 aroundits peripheral edge and these sockets I5 are arranged to accommodate adjustment links shown as I6 and which are hingedly attached to the lower hinge plate H by means of pins shown as I l.
The-lower hinge plate It is further provided with a downwardly extending member having-a conical lower portion l9 and recessed to accommodate a ball 20 which acts as a support for the lower hinge plate 14 when it is inserted into an aperture 21 disposed within the base Ill-and the bottom of this aperture 2| is provided with a recess of semi-radial contour to accommodate the spherical member or ball 20. i
-The hinge plate 14' is also supported in a vertical position by means of a ball bearing assembly 22 WhiChlS disposed within the uppen-portion of the base I'll and which is retainedv in position by means of a radial plate shown as23 which is attached to the base l0 and held in position by means of the screws shown as 24. The inner member of the ball bearing assembly 22 engages the extending face 25 of the lower hinge plate l4 and thus the plate I4 is supported in a horizontal and vertical position by means of the ball bearing assembly 22 and the spherical ball 20 respectively.
The upper portion of the vertical standard or rod ll engages an upper hinge plate shown as 26 also provided with a plurality of recesses or sockets 21 into which the adjustable links it are placed and hingedly supported by means of pins H. The upper portion of the upper hinge plate 26 is provided with an extending member 28 which has a radial groove shown as 29 around its entire peripheral surface,
The vertical standard H is also provided with a threadedly engaged hollow adjustment nut shown as 30 which is provided with a, downwardly disposed collar 3| into which the screws 32 are inserted and the ends 33 of the screws 32 engage the radial slot 29 in the upper portion 28 of the upper hinge plate 26 to retain the hollow adjustment nut 30 in rotatable engagement with the upper hinge plate 26 at all times and permit the upper hinge plate 26 to remain in position where it does not rotate on the vertical standard II when the hollow adjustment nut 30 is turned by means of the operator engaging the knurled surface of the nut 30. The
revolving of the hollow adjustment nut 32 will cause the upper hinge plate 26 to be raised or 30 willfcause the projecting arms to extend outward at all points so that the yarn canbe suspended with any pre-determined amount ofv 1561151011.: It is also obvious that any number otextending or projectin arms may be employed and the devicejfmay be constructed to accommodate any number or size of these projecting members.
While Ihave shown a specific'arran ement of 'thew component parts constituting the device, I am'- fully cognizant of the fact that many changes in their form and configuration may be made without in any way effecting their operativeness and efficiency, and I reserve the right to make such changes as I may deem necessary or convenien-t without de arting from the spiritof my invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having. thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letter Patent in the United States is: A device of the character described comprising a basela vertical standard rotatably supported bysaid; base, a lower hinge member forming a part'oi' said vertical standard, an upper hinge member provided with an extension having a radialgigroove, slidably supported by said vertical standard. a hollow adjustment nut threadedly shown, skeins of yarn or thejlike of various sizes may be placed onto the contact members 34 and the adjustment and rotary .movement of the hollow adjustment'nut nut provided with a downwardly disposed collar, said collar provided with a plurality of apertures, said collar journaled on said extension, fastening elements, said fastening elements adapted for insertion in said apertures and said groove for holding said collar on said extension, said nut employed for slidably movin said upper hinge member toward or from said lower hinge member, support arms comprising a plurality of link members hingedly attached at their central portion and ends to one another, the ends of a pair of said link members hingedly attached to said hinge plates, contact members hingedly attached at their upper end to the depending end of one of said link members, said contact members provided with elongated slots at their ,lower end for hingedly engaging the lower deengaging the upper ends of said standard, said pending end of one of said links, thereby causing the angle of said link members to change when said nut is moved on said standard causing said contact members to move toward and away'fr'om said vertical standard, said lower hinge plate having a reduced extension cone-shaped at its free end, said end provided with a recess, a .ball bearing assembly, a spherical ball, said assembly disposed within said base and supporting the upper part of said'extensiom'said ball disposed in said recess and said base. 1 1
