Description
E. KERN FILING DEVICE Nov. s, 1933.

Patented Nov. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FILING DEVICE Application August 12, 1937, Serial No. 158,682
'7 Claims.
The invention relates to filing devices and more particularly to readily operable means for detachab-ly clamping blue prints, maps, or the like for vertical filing or display.
Drawings, such as are used by architects, builders and engineers, are not easily filed and maintained in accessible arrangement because commonly such drawings are laid flat one upon another in drawers. The improved clamping means is particularly adapted for use in vertical filing cabinets of a type such as are shown in Patents No. 1,867,158 and No. 1,867,159, both issued July 12, 1932, in which the drawings, wall paper or fabric, are suspended in a readily accessible manner and from which they can quickly and conveniently be removed.
It is an object of the invention to provide supporting members for a vertical filing device with novel rotatably mounted spring actuated clamp-- ing elements.
Another object is to provide novel means to securely clamp drawings or the like to supporting members.
The foregoing and such other objects of the invention as will more fully appear hereinafter as the description proceeds, will be more readily understood from a perusal of the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion of a filing or display device embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevational view of a slidable supporting member showing the improved clamp in disengaged position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the slidable member and clamp.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevational view of a slidable member having a modified form of clamp thereon.
The improved clamp, indicated generally at II, is secured, in a manner to be fully described in detail hereinafter, upon a slidable member H. The member I2 preferably consists of an elongated strip of sheet material having its upper margin folded rearwardly and downwardly to provide a flange l3. The flange I3 is adapted to overlie the upper edge of a strip |4 forming a part of a hanger arm I5 whereby the member l2 may be freely slid onto or off of the strip I l. The hanger arm |5 may be formed independently of the strip I4 or the arm and strip may be made of a single piece of material stamped or otherwise bent to the required form. An eyelet or journal I6 is provided at one end of the hanger arm so that said arm may be mounted for swinging in a horizontal plane.
In use, a plurality of said hanger arms preferably are pivotally mounted in a readily accessible position upon a suitable support within a filing cabinet. To this end a mounting H is provided, which, in its preferred form, comprises a channel member having openings I8 in its flanges. The journal l6 of the arm is positioned between the mounting fianges, in alignment with a pair of the openings l8, and a pin I9 is inserted for securing said arm to the mounting. In this manner an independent filing unit supported upon the arm |5 is provided which is swingable therewith.
The clamp best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, preferably includes a suitable bracket 2| and a clamping element 22 each of which is provided adjacent one end with spaced apart ears 23-24, respectively, to receive a bearing pin 25. The bracket 2| is rotatably secured by a rivet 26 to the slidable member I2, an embossed bearing surface for the bracket2| preferably being formed therein. The clamping element 22 has its free end 28 bent outwardly slightly and an elongated opening 29 is provided therein adjacent said end to receive a hanger pin 3| therethrough when in clamping position. The clamping element is held in clamping position by a coil spring 32 carried on the bearing pin 25.
The pin 3| preferably is threaded at one end 33 to receive a nut 34 whereby it is rigidly secured to the slidable member l2. Two or more pins 3| and a like number of clamping members H are mounted on each slidable member l2. As shown, the drawings or other sheets of material 35 to be secured to the slidable member are suitably perforated adjacent one edge to receive the pins 3|. The, clamping members II are moved from a substantially horizontal ineffective position clear of the sheets 35 (as best shown in Fig. 2) into a vertical position to co-operatively engage over the respective pin 3| to clamp the sheets tightly against the slidable member I2. To remove any or all of the drawings or other sheets of material, the free end 28 of the clamp element is engaged and the clamp element is withdrawn from over the pin 3| and swung into its substantially horizontal position clear of the sheets of material.
In the clamp illustrated in Fig. 4, the aperture 29a is cut through one edge of the clamping element 22 thereby permitting said element to be rotated into or out of engagement with the pin 3| without the necessity of raising said clamping element to clear the end of the pin 3|. The clamp is identical in all other respects with the one previously described.
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim:
1. In a filing and display device, a slidable member having spaced pins to receive and support sheets and like material, and hingedly mounted clamps rotatably mounted on said member cooperating with said pins to retain said sheets thereon.
2. In a filing and display device, a unit comprising a supporting arm having means at one end to provide a pivotal support therefor, a member provided with a. downturned flange at its upper edge adapted to engage the arm, a plurality of pins on said member to receive and support sheets or other material on said member, and yieldable clamps mounted on said member co-operating one with each pin to retain the sheets in place.
3. In a. filing and display device, a unit comprising a supporting arm having means at one end to provide a pivotal support therefor, a member slidable on said arm, a plurality of pins on said member to receive and support sheets or other material, clamps pivotally mounted on said member each having an opening to receive the free end of one pin to secure the sheets to said member.
4. In a filing and display device, a unit comprising a supporting arm having means at one end to provide a pivotal support therefor, a member slidable on said arm, a plurality of pins on said member to receive and support sheets or other material, a plurality of brackets rotatably mounted on said member, and a clamp element mounted in each bracket to co-operate one with each pin to retain the sheets in place.
5. A clamp comprising, in combination, a bracket pivotally secured to a member, a pin on said member, and a clamp element yieldably secured to said bracket movable into engagement with said pin.
6. A clamp comprising, in combination, a bracket pivotally secured to a member, a pin on said member adjacent said bracket, and a movable clamp element mounted on said bracket apertured to receive said pin.
'7. A clamp comprising, in combination, a bracket pivotally secured at one end to a member, spaced ears adjacent the other end of said bracket, a bearing pin extending between said ears, a clamp element having an opening at one end, spaced ears on the other end of said element journaled on said bearing pin, means between said bracket and clamp element to urge the free end of the clamp element toward the member, and a pin on said member to extend through the opening in said clamp element.
