1 Claim. 1 This invention relates tonew and useful im'-- provements; ina garment of the corset ty More particularly, the present invention proposes an improved garment of the corset type characterized by a novel combination of'a corset and a. brassiere.

Another object of the present. invention proposes the construction of a garment in which the brassire portion is integralwith the corset portion at. the back of the garment but in which the brassieereportion is free of the corset at'the front of; the garment, but overlapped with the top portion thereof in order to provide freedom of movement in bending the body at the waist area.

Still another object of the present invention proposes forming the front of the brassire portion with a front opening which extends from the top to the bottom thereof with non-elastic members on either side of the front opening carrying interengageable fastener membersin a manner'to close the front opening of the brassire portion.

The invention further proposes forming the corset portion of the garment to include a nonelastic front panel and a non-elastic back panel having a top portion which: projects above the top edge of the front panel with elastic side panels secured between the adjacent side edges of said front and back panels between thetop: and bottom edges of the front panel with a front opening extended downward from the top edge of thefront panel in a manner to permit the garment to be conveniently put on.

A further object of the present invention proposes forming the brassire portion as wide as said front panel with elastic inserts secured between the adjacent edges of the brassiere portion and the top portion of the back panel for securing the brassire portion thereto.

Still further, the present invention proposes arranging the elastic inserts so that. their bottomedges overlap the top edges of the elastic side panels and are secured thereto in a manner toprevent separation of the adjacent edges of the elastic inserts and the elastic side panels andto provide elastic sections which extend the full length of the garment directly below the arm.

Still another object of the present invention proposes forming the elastic side panels of heavier elastic material than that used to form the elastic inserts in a manner so that the garment will have maximum compression on the abdominal region of the body and merely a comfortable supporting uplift on the breasts.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a garment of the corset type which is 1 claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The garment of the corset type, according to the present invention, includes a. corset portion 20'and' a brassiere portion 2 l The corset portion 2!] comprises a non-elastic front panel 22 which is preferably formed with the usual vertically extended reinforcin bones as is generally known in the corset. art. The bottom edge of the front panel 22. is curved slightly upward and provided. with two elastic insert 23 providing freedom of leg movement during walking. and other normal exercises. Extended downwardv from the top edge of the front panel 22 to a point approximately midway of the height thereof, there is a front opening closed by the usual slide fasteners 24 and internal hooks 25 and. eyes 26-, as most clearly shown in Fig. 4.

The corset portion 20' further includes a nonelastic back panel 21 which is also preferably formedwith the usual vertically extended re-- inforcing bones as is generally known in the corset art- The back panel 21 has a top portion 2! projected. above the top edge of the front panel 22 for attachment thereto of the brassiere portion 2|, as will become clear as this description proceeds. The center of the top portion of the back panel 21 is formed with an elastic insert 28, see Fig. 2.

Depending from the bottom. edges of the front panel 22 and the back panel 21 there are the usual elastic straps 29 upon which the customary hose supporters, not shown. are mounted for supporting stockings from the garment.

Elastic side panels 30- are secured between the adjacent side edges of the front panel 22 and the back panel 21. The elastic side panels 30 extend only between the top and bottom edges of the front panel 22 and having no connection with. the top portion 21 of the back panel 21. The side panels 30 are formed of elastic material arrangedto stretch in the horizontal with little or no stretch in the vertical. The front edges of the side panels 30, are connected to the adjacent side edges of the front panel 22 by lines The backedges' of the side panels The brassiere portion 2| is comprised of two 1 spaced pockets 33 of non-elastic material for,

Each of the pockets 33 is alike in construction and each comprises a top Informing the garment it is proposed that the elastic side panels 30 be formed of elastic material which is heavier than that used for formin the elastic inserts 4|, so that the corset portion 7 20 ;will have maximum compression on the abdomen region of the body while the brassire portion 2| willmerely exert a comfortable uplifting supportion 33 of a single layer of non-elastic material and a bottom portion 33 of a double layer of non-elastic material. The layers forming the portions 33 and 33 of the pockets 33 have a horizontal meeting line 33 and are secured .together by stitches 34, see Fig. 7.

Positioned inwardly of the pockets 33 there are brassiere members 35 formed of non-elastic material and having their outer edges cut to conform to the shape of the inner half of the pockets 33 from the top edges thereof to a point substantially midway of the bottom of the pockets. The adjacent edges of the pockets 33 and the brassiere members 35 are secured together by. lines of stitches 36. The adjacent vertical edges of the brassiere members 35 are overlapped and releasably secured together by conventional hooks 31 and eyes 38.

Disposed beneath the pockets 33 between the outer edges of the brassiere members 35 and the side edges of the front panel 22 of the corset portion 20 there are elastic members 39. The elastic members 39 are formed of elastic material arranged to stretch in the horizontal with'very little or no stretch in the vertical. The inner edges of the elastic members 39 are secured to the adjacent outer edges of the brassiere members 35, beneath the pockets 33, by means of stitches 40. The top edges of the elastic members 39 are secured to the bottom edges of the pockets 33 by lines of stitches 38 which form extensions of the stitches 36 which secure the pockets 33 to the brassiere members 35.

Elastic inserts 4| are secured between the adjacent outer edges of the brassire portion 2| and the vertical side edges of the top portion 27 of the back panel 21. The elastic inserts 4| are formed of elastic material arranged to stretch in the horizontal with very little .or no stretch in the vertical. The front edges of the elastic inserts 4| are secured to the adjacent outer edges of the pockets 33 and the elastic members 39 by lines of stitches 3| which form W overlapping the top edges of the elastic side panels 33 and secured thereto by lines of stitches 42. This prevents any separation between the adjacent edges of the elastic inserts 4| and the elastic side panels 30 and provides elastic sections at the sides of the garment which extend the full length thereof immediately below the arms. Furthermore, the construction provides a brassiere portion 2| which has a width equal to that of the front panel 22 of the corset portion 20. The bottom of the brassiere portion 2| is free of any connection with the top portion of the front panel 22 but does overlap the top pormovement in the waist area.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

An openable brassiere for an undergarment having a corset including an openable non-elastic front panel and a non-elastic back panel having a top portion projected above the top edge of the front panel with elastic side panels secured between the adjacent side edges of the front and back panels between the top and bottom edgesof the frontpanel, said brassiere comprising a pair of spaced breast pockets of non-elastic material having substantially vertically extended outer side edges, a'pair of brassire members of nonelastic material having adjacent edges releasably connected together, said brassiere members being secured to said pockets along the inner edges and partially along the bottom edges of said pockets and having substantially vertical outer edges depending below said pockets, elastic members connected to the substantially vertical outer edges of said brassire members and the remaining portions of the bottom edges of said pockets, said brassiere members and said elastic members having straight bottom edges and their bottom edge portions overlapping the top edge portion of the front panel of the corset, said elastic members having substantially vertical outer edges arranged in continuation of the substantially vertical outer edges of said pockets, and elastic inserts secured between the substantially vertical outer edges of said pockets and said elastic members and the top portion of the back panel of the corset, said elastic inserts having their bottom edge portions overlapping and secured to the top edge portions of the elastic side panels.
