P. J. MQRANO i FOUNDATION GARMENT- Filed Jan. l2., 1946 By am Patented Oct. 28, 1947 FOUNDATION GARMENT Patrick J. Morano, Newark, N. J., -assignor to Even-Pnl Foundation, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 12, 1946, Serial No. 640,715
2 Claims.
of the corset, girdle Aor combined brassire and girdle types.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a foundation garment of the above kind, in which -effective support for the breasts and diaphragm is provided.
The invention contemplates the provision of a foundation garment of the above kind wherein the body portion -of l.the garment has a portion to be disposed over the diaphragm of the wearer below the breast cups, said 4diaphragm overlying `portion including a pair of inelastic overlapping ap extensions extending in opposite directions and adjustable as to extent of overlap, whereby said overlying portion may be drawn smoothly and 'with a selected degree `of tautness or tension over the diaphragm.
More specically the invention contemplates the provision, in a garment of the character described, of an adjustable diaphragm covering portion wherein pressure is exerted in a direction transversely of the body and across the diaphragm, and whereby upward creeping of the garment is avoided.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevational View of a foundation garment constructed in accordance with the present invention. y
Figure 2 is a front elevational View thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged horizontal section through the back panel and adjacent portions of the side panels of the garment, taken on line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation, partly broken away, showing the flaps on the adjacent edgeportions of the back panel sections above the flap extensions, together with the hook and eye members for adjustably and separably connecting said flaps.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present foundation garment comprises a vertically elongated body portion adapted to extend over the hips and above the abdomen of the wearer to provide a girdle, which body portion includes a front panel composed of inelastic sections 5 and 5a. sewed together along adjacent side edges as at E, and an elastic triangular gusset a between the adjacent side edges of the sections 5 and 5a. at the bottom of the panel. A lace or other suitable front brassire portion composed of breast pocket sections 'I and la are sewed together along adjacent side edges as at 8, .and sewed at their lower edges to the upper edge of the front panel as ,at 9. Adjacent portions of the sections 5 and 'I and 5a and Ia are provided W-ith fullness Ato provide ybreast cups at ID.
The body portion further includes elastic side panels IiI and IIrrI joined yto the outer Yside edges of the front panel from the top to the bottom of the latter, the major upper portions of the panels 5a and IIa. being suitably separa-bly joined as by a slide fastening at I2 and hooks and eyes at i3, to facilitate donning of the garment. The body portion still lfurther includes a back panel compo-sed of suitable sections I4 and 14a, preferably inelastic, sewed together along the major lower portions of their adjacent side edges as vat i5 and Ato the side panels at 16.
Adjustable shoulder straps IFI 4connect the upper edges of the rst brassire `portion and the back panel t0 properly support said brassire portion.
The body portion of `the garment provides an upper portion to be disposed over the diaphragm of the wearer, and this portion includes a pair of inelastic overlapping flap extensions I8 and I 8a on adjacent edges of the back panel sections, said flap extensions having tapered ends extending in opposite directions and carrying an attaching element I9, preferably in the form of a hook member. Spaced eyelets 20 and 20a are provided on the outer faces of the back panel sections for receiving the attaching elements I9 in any one of several selected positions to thereby govern the degree of overlap of the flap extensions. One of the back panel sections has a slit 2| through which the flap extension of the other back panel section is extended to reach the securing means on said one back panel section.
The adjacent edge portions of the back panel sections above the flap extensions t8 and I8a are provided with adjustably connected flaps 22 and 22a. As shown, the ap 22 is provided with laterally spaced rows of eye members 23, and the flap 22a is provided with hook members 24 adapted to coact with either row of eye members 23 to adjustably connect the aps 22 and 22a and thereby govern the snugness of the garment in the region of the breasts. The flap 22 has an elastic insert 25 to allow transverse stretch of the garment in this region.
In use, the garment is donned and partially fastened about the wearers body by means of the fasteners I2 and I3. The overlapping flap extensions I8 and I8a are adjusted to the proper tautness across the diaphragm of the wearer by ennary supporters 2E and 21 provided on the lower Y edge of the garment. Y
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated b y those skilled in the art. M inor changes may be made in details of construction,
such as fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A combined Ibrassire and girdle comprising an inelastic front panel, a front brassire portion sewed to the upper edge of said front panel, adjacent parts of said front panel and said brassire portion being provided with fullness to form breast cups, horizontally yieldable elastic side panels, one side panel being sewed along one side edge to one side edge of the front panel and one side edge of the front brassire portion, means for separably connecting one side edge of the other side panel with the other side edges of the front panel and the front brassire portion, an inelastic back panel sewed at its side edges to the other side edges of the side panels, the upper portion of said back panel being centrally divided and provided with overlapping flap extensions and with flaps above said flap extensions, one of said flap extensions slidably extending through the other, an attaching element on the free end of each iiap extension, spaced means on the outer face of the back panel for securing said attaching elements in one of several selected -positions to thereby govern the degree of overlap of the flap extensions and vary the tension imposed transversely of the wearers body in the region of the diaphragm, and means to adjustably connect said aps for governing the snugness of the garment in the region of the breasts.
2. A foundation garment comprising an inelastic front panel, horizontally yielda'ble elastic side panels, one side panel being sewed along one side edge to one side edge of the front panel, means for separably connecting one side edge of the other side panel with the other side edge of the front panel, an inelastic back panel sewed at its side edges to the other side edges of the side panels, the upper portion of said back panel being centrally divided and provided with overlapping flap extensions, one of said ap extensions slidably extending through the other, an attaching element on the free end of each flap extension, and spaced means on the outer face of the back panel for securing said attaching elements in one of several selected positions to thereby govern the degree of overlap of the flap eXtensions and vary the tension imposed transversely of the wearers body in the region of the diaphragm.
