BEVEL-DEVQICE Filed Aug. 8, 1945 INVENTOR Q/ HUWZHHD EALBEAITH ATTORNEY W Fl Patented Aug. 19, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BEVEL DEVICE Howard Galbraith, Vallejo, Calif. Application August 8, 1945, Serial No. 609,700 2 Claims. (Cl. 33-98) v( Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as
' amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) This invention relates to a bevel device and provide a bevel device in which a plurality of bevel arms, preferably four in number, are pivotally connected with extensible body members for movement in planes substantially at right angles to each other in order to define a geometrical solid having end faces oblique to the longitudinal axis in two different planes.
It is a further object. of the invention to provide for carrying out the foregoing object in a facile, economical and efficient manner,
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form'of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
The single figure is a perspective view of a bevel device embodying the features of my invention.
Referring more in detail to the drawing:
The bevel device of my invention comprises a first body member I and a second body member 2, the body members preferably being in the form of elongated prisms rectangular in cross section and rounded at the outer ends.
Aifixed to the first body member I adjacent an end thereof is an extension support member 3, which preferably carries a linear scale 4. The
support member 3 extends from the inner end of I the body member I with its longitudinal axis being substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member. The second body inner membe 2 has a groove or recessi extending from the inner end thereof, preferably in its outer face, in which the member 3 is slidably received. Preferably a graduation 6 is marked on the face of the second body member 2 adjacent the groove or recess 5. Preferably a second extension support member I is affixed to one of the body members I or 2 and slidably received in a, groove in the other body member on the faces opposite the faces on which the support member 3 is aiiixed and slidably received. The second extension support member I may be similar in construction to the extension support member 3.
The first body member I preferably has a channel 8 cut into the rounded outer end portion opposite the end to which the extension support 3 is affixed and the second body member 2 preferably has a similar channel 9 cut into its rounded outer end portion. The respective faces of the channels 8 and 9 are substantially co-planar.
A first bevel arm I0 is pivoted to the first body member I, preferably within the channel 8, on a pivot stud II. A second bevel arm I2 is pivoted to the second body member 2, preferably within the channel 9, on a pivot stud I3. The bevel arms I0 and I2 have straight outeredges [land I5 respectively that are tangential to the rounded outer ends of the body members I and 2 respectively. Pivotal movement of the bevel arms In and I2 is preferably in substantially the same plane. 1
A third bevel arm I6 is pivotally connected to the first body member I for movement in a plane substantially at right angles to the planes of movement of the first and second bevel arms I0 and I2. A fourth bevel arm I! is pivotally connected with the second body member 2 for movement preferably in substantially the same plane as the movement of the third bevel arm I6.
The third bevel arm comprises a straight edge member I8, an outer link I9, and an inner link 20. The inner link 20 ispivoted to the first body member I inwardly of'the first bevelarm I0 on a pivot study 2 I. The outer link I9 is pivoted to the inner link'20 on a pivot stud 22 and the straight edge member I8 is pivoted to the outer link I9 on a pivot stud 23. The fourth bevel arm I'I, pivoted to the second body member 2, is similar in construction to the third bevel arm I6 and hence is not described in detail.
Operation The bevel device of my invention has particular application in delineating wood blocks to be cut to fit as brace members between supports in which it is necessary to provide beveled end faces oblique to the longitudinal axes of the blocks in two different planes at right angles to each other in order to achieve a satisfactory fit. An example of such an application is in the cutting of rising blocks or clamp blocks which are fitted between the frames in boat construction. The surfaces of adjacent frames in a boat are ordinarily out of parallel in all planes due to the peculiar curved configuration of a boat. In order to provide firm construction in a boat, it is necessary to insert rising blocks and clamp blocks between adjacent frames to brace them.
In using the bevel device of my invention to delineate a block to be cut to form a rising block or a clamp block, for example, the device is placed between the adjacent frames of a boat and oriented preferably as shown in the figure. The first and second body members I and 2 are extended until the ends contact the surfaces of the frames. The graduation on the scale 4 opposite to the graduation B on the second body member 2 is noted.
The first and second bevel arms 10 and 12 are moved about the pivot studs II and 13 until the straight edges [4 and I5 are in contact with the adjacent surfaces of the frames. The third and fourth bevel arms i6 and I1 are moved in planes substantially at right angles to the planes of movement of the first and second bevel arms I and 2 until the straight edges thereof contact the surfaces of the frames. bevel arms and I 2 define the verticalangles between the frames and the third and fourth bevel arms l6 and I1 define the horizontal'angles between the frames. 7
The first and second body members I and 2 are moved inwardly toward each other and the device removed from between the frames. The body members. are moved outwardly until the graduation 6 on the second body member 2 is aligned with the graduation on the scale 4 with which it was aligned whenthe device was between the frames.
The device" is placed over a block of wood to be used: in making the rising or'clamp block and adjusted so that: th'e'first and second bevel arms l0 and I2. are against a surface. and the third and fourth bevel arms I6 and IT are against a surface at right angles to the first surface. The block of wood is marked with a suitable marking tool moved along the straight edges of the bevel arms. The block may then be cut to be used as a rising or clamp block to fit between the frames between which the measurement was taken.
I have explained the manner in which the devicemay beused to delineate wood blocks used as rising or clamp blocks in boat construction. However, it is obvious that the device may be used in a similar manner'to delineate. geometric solids of any material to be cut'in numerous other applications. The use in connection with boat construction'is thereforeto be considered only as an exampleof'the manner in which the device-may be used.
While I have shown but one embodiment of'my invention, it is apparent that the device is susceptible to modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I do not wish, therefore, to be limited by the disclosures set forth, but only by the scope of the appended claims.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
