The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in book markers and has for its primary object to provide means for marking a relatively large number of the pages of a book.

An important object of the invention is to provide a marker of this character embodying a plurality of individual marking elements for marking a number of the pages of the book and pro-,

viding means for connecting the markers to each other to prevent separation from the book and. without forcing or stressing the binding of the book out of shape, or otherwise'causing injury thereto.

A further object of the invention is to provide individual markers for a large number of the pages of a book together with means for connecting the markers to each other between the covers of the book and in which each marker provides a reinforcement for the adjacent pages of the bookand serves to maintain the pages in a smooth unwrinkled condition.

More specifically, the invention embodies the provision of a plurality of marker leaves adapted for insertion between selected pages of a book and including tabs projecting outwardl beyond the edges of the pages and having indicating means thereon together with means for connecting the inner edges of the marker leaves in assembled relation to each other between the co-vers of the book.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a book in open position and with a group of the markers shown therein and including one of the anchor leaves for the group of markers.

Figure 2 is a similar view showing one of the intermediate markers.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of a group of markers in assembled relation, and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view of one end of one of the markers.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the nu- 1 Claim. (Cl. 116-119) meral 5 designates one of the book markers which is constructed of substantially thin sheet material, such as Celluloid or other suitable substantially flexible material, the marker being of substantially U-shaped construction and including a substantially wide bight portion 6 and leg portions 1.

The bight portion 6 of the marker is adapted for positioning vertically along one of the leaves 8 of a book 9, the pages being of a width adapted for positioning between the legs 1 of the marker as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings, the upper and lower edges of the bight portion of the marker being inclined inwardly with respect to the upper and lower edges of the book as indicated at ill to position the legs I outwardly at the ends of the book and with the legs extending in a; direction toward the binding of the book, thus straddling and freeing the binding.

The outer edge of the bight portion 6 of the marker is formed with a tab ll projecting outwardly of the free edge of the leaves of the book and each surface of the tab protruding beyond the leaves of the book is provided with a number designated at l2.

The inner ends of the legs 1 are formed with openings l3 adapted for receiving therein a cord or other flexible member I 4 having its ends connected by a conventional form of separable connector [5.

Any desired number of the markers 5 may be positioned between the leaves of the book and connected at their inner end by the flexible member [4, the flexible member extending around the pages of the book under the front and back covers 16 and H.

The identifying numbers l2 on the tabs ll of the markers are arranged in sequence beginning toward the front of the book, beginning with number I and numbering consectively.

As will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings, the bight portions 6 of the markers are positioned adjacent the free edges of the leaves 8 so that the leaves may be turned under the markers, when desired.

Also assembled on the elastic or flexible member I4 is a plurality of anchoring members I8 3 as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings. The legs l9 are also formed with the opening 20 for receiving the elastic or flexible member [4.

One of the members I8 is positioned between the pages and each cover of the book and one or more intermediate anchoring members 2| may also be provided for positioning toward the center of the book.

The anchoring members adjacent the covers and center of the book serve to keep the markers 5 in position during the opening and closing of the book and the effect of the opening and clos= ing of the book is todraw the anchoring members toward the binding by the elastic member l4 so that the markers will not become offset and will be maintained in alignment.

The flat area of the bight portion 6 of the markers will serve to maintain the pages in a smooth condition and thus avoid wrinkling thereof and the elastic member 14 extending around the pages of the book will serve to compress the same in a substantially compact form.

The markers further protect the binding from being spread and forced open and the smooth flat surfaces of the marker protect the leaves of the book from wrinkling or buckling, or becoming snagged at the'edges, thus overcoming some of the objectional features of the other types of markers.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is, believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention that the same 4 is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

In a book marker, the combination, which comprises an elongated sheet of material having outwardly converging ends wherein the outer edge of the sheet is shorter than the inner edge, said sheet having parallel arms extending from the ends of the longer inner edge thereof, said arms positioned to extend beyond the upper and lower edges of the pages of a book in which the device may be used with the sheet positioned substantially mid-way between the binding and outer edges of the pages, said sheet also carrying a tab extending outward beyond the outer edges of said pages, said arms having openings in the REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
