7' Claims.

This invention relates to. new and useful improvement in paper hats.

More particularly the invention proposes an improved paper hat which is characterized by an elliptical top paper. sheet having a down-- wardly extending strip portion at the back and. associated. with a bottom, paper sheetv having a. sun shield front portion with side strips. bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into slots, formed in. said downwardly extending strip portion. It is pro posed that said side strips beprovided. with upwardly bent strip portions releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet for supporting the latter.

Theinvention contemplates a modified paper hat in whichv the elliptical top portion is provided with a flange portion bent downwardly around its edges and associated with means. for holding the flange portion in position. when the, hat is worn.

Another object of the invention is the construction of an article as mentioned which is. simple and durable and which may be. manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.

The paper hat in accordance with that form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1-3, includes an elliptical top paper sheet [0 having a downwardly extending strip portion II at its back. A bottom paper sheet l2 has a sun shield front portion or visor l3 with side strips [4 bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into vertical slots [5 formed in said downwardly extending; strip. portion H. The; said side strips M are provided with upwardly extending strip portions t6 which are releasably connected with. and assist in supporting the. elliptical top. sheet ill.

The strip portions- Iz6- extending. from the sidestrips M are formed with upwardly projecting small. substantially ovate or semicircular parts or tongues I! which extend through slots l8 formed in the. top paper sheet 10. shield front portion 13,- protects the wearers eyesv from the sun. A feature of the hat resides in the fact that air may circulate through the open spaces between the sheets, l0 and [2. Hat size graduations [:4 and glued portions- M are provided on one of the side strips M for securing the side strips to correspond with a desired head size.

This hat may be constructed of paper, cardboard or any other suitable material.

In Fig. 4 the elliptical top paper sheet wis formed. with a downwardly projecting flanged portion. 2c to afford further protection from the sun. This extension may be formed by corrugation or slots and may be of any desired size.

In Figs. 5 and 62 a modified: form of the: invention has been disclosed which is: very similar to; the prior form. distinguishing merely the fact that the elliptical top paper sheet It. has a. flange portion 213 which. is. adapted to, be bent downwards around its. edges. This flange portion 20 is defined by an elliptical score line 2|. The flange portion 20 thus is formed with a plurality of dart-like notches or V-shaped cut-outs 22 which provide segments which may be folded when the flange 20 is bent from the flat condition shown in Fig. 5 to a downwardly extended position from the position shown in Fig. 6, the same as the flange 20, as shown in Fig. 4. A plurality of slots 23 is formed in the flange 2B. A strand 24, such as a ribbon or lace is laced through the slots 23 and is passed through slots 25 formed in the downwardly extending strip portion II. This strand 24 is tied in the back into a bow 2B.

In other respects this form of the invention is similar to that previously shown and like reference numerals identify like parts in each of the several views.

A feature of this form of the invention resides in the fact that the paper hat is composed of two fiat pieces which may be bent into shape and connected together whenever the hat is ready to be used. When the hat is stored away the parts are disconnected and flattened out. To do this the bow 2B is opened which frees the flange 20, which may then be opened. The sheets Ill and I2 are then disconnected and flattened out.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, itis to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, and said side strips having upwardly bent strip portions releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet.

A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to-the back and slipped into slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, and said side strips having upwardly bent strip portions releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet, said upwardly bent strip portions being provided with reduced top ends engaging through slots formed in said top paper sheet.

A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into'slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, and said side strips having upwardly bent strip portions releasabl connected with said elliptical top sheet, said upwardly bent strip portions being provided with reduced top ends engaging through slots formed in said top paper sheet, said reduced top ends having undercuts at the sides by which they are securely held.

A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, and said side strips having upwardly bent strip portions releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet, said upwardly bent strip portions being provided with reduced top ends engaging through slots formed in said top paper sheet, said reduced top ends having undercuts at the sides by which the are securely held, and adjacent said undercuts there being shoulders which engage the bottom face of said top paper sheet.

A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, said side strips having upwardly bent strip portions releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet, said elliptical top sheet having a flange portion bent downwardly around its edge, and a strand laced through slots in said flange portion, said side strips being graduated to correspond with various head sizes and a glued area to permanently secure the said side strips at the desired head size.

A paper hat, comprising an elliptical top paper sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom paper sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and slipped into slots formed in said downwardly extending strip portion, said side strips having upwardl bent strip portions, releasably connected with said elliptical top sheet, said elliptical top sheet having a flange portion bent downwardly around its edge, and a strand laced through slots in said flange portion, said downwardly extending strip portion of said top sheet being provided with slots through which said strand is also laced.

A paper hat, comprising a top sheet having a downwardly extending strip portion at its back, and a bottom sheet having a sun shield front portion with side strips bent downwards and extending around the sides to the back and coengaged in overlapping relation with said downwardly extending strip portion, said side strips having upwardly extending strip portions, releasably connected with said top sheet, said top sheet having a flange portion bent downwardly around its edge, and a strand laced through slots in said flange portion, said downwardly extending strip portion of said top sheet being provided with slots through which said strand is also laced, and said strand being securely fastened at one point into a bow.
