TYPE HOLDER FOR PRINTING PRESSES Filed June 10, 1946 y INVENTOR. FREDERICK B. J oReE-sEN Patented Dec. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
This invention relates to type frames, of the character used in box printing machines, and is an improvement over the similar structure in my prior Patent No. 1,801,507, issued April 21, 1931.
An object of the invention is to provide, in a frame of the class described, a double lock feature for securing the type-holding and spacer bars to the frame so as to insure against their detachment from the frame during printing operations.
Another object of the invention is to provide a type frame for rotary printing presses capable of being loaded through gates disposed intermediate its longitudinal sides rather than from an end as in previously proposed devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide,
in a type frame of the character described having associated therewith a plurality of separate typeholding and spacer bars, a single bolt element for looking all of the bars to the type frame.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood, however, that variations in the showing made by the said drawings and description may be adopted within the scope of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a portional vertical sectional view,
the type holder to an enlarged scale, taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a portional vertical sectional view, to an enlarged scale, taken in the plane indicated by the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 isa side elevational view looking in the direcion of the arrow 6 of Figure 5.
The illustrated embodiment of my invention is seen to comprise a rectangular base plate 1 having a substantially semi-circular cross-sectional form to permit its mounting on the type cylinder of a rotary press. The actual mounting on the press cylinder may be effected in a manner well known in the art and since it has no bearing on the present invention is not illustrated or described herein. The base plate I is of uniform thickness throughout its area and has a pair of grooves 8 extending along theconvex surface thereof and paralleling the respective longitudinal edges 9. Arcuate margin bars ll, rising from the convex surface of the base plate, are suitably secured to the opposite transverse ends of the latter and comparable margin bars l2 are suitably secured to and extend along the longitudinal edges of the plate. Each of the longitudinal margin bars [2, as will be seen in Figure 3, is provided with an integral lip portion l3 spaced from the surface of the base plate 1 and having, at its junction with the main body of the margin bar, a relatively perpendicular surface 14 which is aligned and coplanar with the side of the groove 8 nearest the longitudinal edge!) of the base plate. The disposition of the parts is such that parallel L-shaped grooves are thus formed along the holder, the longer leg of. the L paralleling the convex surface of the base plate while the shorter leg, represented by the groove 8 extends radially inwardly toward the center of curvature of the base plate. A section of each longitudinal margin bar l2 intermediate the ends of the latter, and defined by the spaced surfaces I6, is omitted to provide a loading gate which is adapted to be opened or closed by the provision of a detachable section I! which has a crosssectional form identical with that of the margin bar l2. Means for positioning and securing the sections I! in place are provided in dowel pins l8, secured in the base plate and slidably engaged in complementary apertures l9 provided in the sections I1, and in capscrews 2| which pass through suitable apertures 22 formed in the sections I1 and which are screwed into threaded sockets 23 provided in the base plate 1. The heads of the screws 2| are set in counterbores 24 so as to position the heads below the surface of the sections 11. Since the sections I! are similar to form to the margin bars l2 it will be seen that the L-shaped grooves are continued along the entire length of the holder between the end margin bars II. It will also be seen, in Figures 4 and 5, that the side of the groove 8 nearest the edge 9 of the base plate is provided with a bevel 26 which extends only between the limiting surfaces l6 of the gates and whose purpose will be presentlv described.
I provide type carrier by means ofvwhich any desired arrangement of printing type. may be attached to the holder and I further provide a single element means for locking up the type composition so as to prevent displacement thereof. Each carrier 21 comprises a bar which is longitudinally curved to conform with the surface curvature of the base plate I and which is provided with an inverted T-shaped groove 28 extending entirely along its convex surface and opening at the opposite ends of the bar. Into this T-shaped groove may be inserted, from either open end thereof, complementarily shaped type and space blocks 29 selected ones of which may carry printing characters 3!. Sufficient blocks 29-.are associated with each carrier so as to completely fill the groove 28 from end to end. As will be best seen in Figures 4 and 5, each end of the carrier is provided with an integral extension 32, projecting into the space between the lip portion I3 of the longitudinal margin bar and the adjacent surface of the base plate, the extreme end of the extension 32 being provided with an integral hook portion 33 complementary with and entering the groove 8. The type carrier, by this arrangement, possesses interlocking connection withftherholder unit. Spacing bars 34,.pofiaxvertical thickness equal to that of the type'carriers 2'!- and havin :end structures simiiar. to that 'justtdescribed in connection with the type carriers, ar provided for insertion between adjacent typezcarriers so as to-eifect an interline- =ar:spacing'between the type ofthe respective carriers. :A lockup barz'36 is provided which is identical in every respect with the spacing bars 3% with' the exceptionthat it carries .alocking bolt .sl'whose stem rpassesrthrough .an elongated slot .38'provided incandzextending longitudinally of the :base: plate, 1.. Anenlargement v39 of the slot 38 is :recessedintosthe :concave surface of the 'baseiplatefandtreceives the fiat sides of the bolt head Al." so "that the, latter will be prevented from rotating asithe .bolt nut $2 is tightened or loos-- ene'd. The-nut 42iis set into a counterbore 43 so "that theiormer will-not project beyond the surface of the lock-up bar.
Attachment or detachment of the type carriers,:spacing bars .and lock-up bar to and from the holder unit may :be effected by removin the longitudinal. margin bar sections i! so as to expose end portions of the L-shaped side grooves of .the :unit. The various bars may then be caused .toslide along the grooves until the extensions 32. register with the gaps created by the detached :sections I! whereupon the bars may be lifted from the holder unit. arrangement :of the various bars may be accomplished by reversing this procedure. However, before a bar can be released from the holder unit, aswillIb-e seen in Figures4 and 5, it is necessary tofree the hook portions 33 from the grooves 8.
Since. eachbar has a considerable amount of longitudinal .fiexibility, this detachment may be readily accomplished by inserting a suitable prying tool, such as a screwdriver or knife, into the recess formed by the face of the bevel 26 and the confronting surface of the hook 33 and prying radially outwardly of the holder unit so as to effect a chordal expansion of the bar sufi'icient to allowthe hook element to clear the groove 8 whereupon the bar may be lifted from the holder unit. It is obvious therefore that, in applying the various bar elements to the holder unit, a radial pressure applied to the elements when the latter are properly aligned with the unit will cause theends of the elementsto be sprung apart and'to thereafter snap into the grooves 8. Thus the bar elements will'be securely locked to the holder unit untildeliberately released as above described. I
The double lock described above, comprising Attachment or re- 1 the extension members 32 and the hook elements 33 which engage their respective grooved recesses, functions to provide an increased measure of operational safety for the printing press with which the type holder unit may be employed. In the printing of comparatively unyielding material such as wooden box ends considerable pressure is imposed on the type carrier and frequently, in the event that slippage occurs between the imprinted material and the press platen, the type carrier is buckledbehind the material sufficiently to release the means attaching the carrier to the holder, the carrier being then flung from the holder. In the improved holder of my invention such accidental detachment is not possible.
Another feature of advantage, the provision of a single bolt lock for securing the various type carriers and spacer bars in place and in proper relationship, tends to materially speed up composing operations andito remove the possibility of unequal-pressure strains-which multiple locking bolts might-cause. Forpurposes ofcconvenience, the headset the -screws 2i and the nut 42 possess the same dimensions so that the same socket wrench may be used on each.
A further'feature of my invention, it will be noted, is'theucase with'which type bars and spacer bars may be insertedainior removed from the carrier while .the latteris mounted .onthe press drum. This serves to greatlysexpedite theprocess of changing type setups between different jobs and preserves registry and alignment .of :the compositionsand the .materialon which the .-im pression isto be made.
Having .thus described myinvention: in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patentis:
