(Cl. 101373) This application is a continuation-in-part of the applicants copending patent application Serial No. 285,649, filed June 5, 1963, now abandoned, entitled Sliding Section Stamp.
Inking stamps of the type with which stamp pads are used are the field to which this invention relates and more particularly this invention has for its object to provide an inking stamp having multiple sections, each section being for printing a different part of a design, the sections being positionable for the independent inking of the printing surfaces thereunder each with a different color and also positionable for the simultaneously stamping of a surface of an object in a multicolor stamping, each color being supplied by a different one of the sections.
A particular object is to provide a stamp as described for making it possible that the different interfitting parts of a design can be printed in different colors.
Heretofore in the prior art, there has been a problem in printing parts of a design having more than one color. It has been necessary to use two stamps, one to be inked and operated separately from the other, in which case, it is difficult to make the second portion of the design to register in the proper position with respect to the first portion.
Still another problem in the use of two stamps has been timing. The length of time it takes to gain a twocolor design has retarded the popularity of multiple color imprinting. It is, therefore, an object to provide a device for multiple color stamping which is rapid and efficient in use and simple and quick to gain a good registration.
A particular object'is to provide a stamp as described, the multiple sections of which have interfitting sliding surfaces which hold printing undersurfaces of theseotions during a printing withtwo sections simultaneously, yet permitting the two sections to slide apart with respect to each other suificiently to permit the independent inking of the undersurfaces thereof each with ink of a different color.
Other and further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the followed detailed description, drawings and claim, the scope of the invention being limited to the drawings themselves as the drawings are only for the purpose of illustrating a way in which the principles of this invention can be applied.
Other embodiments of the invention utilizing the same or equivalent principles may be used and structural changes may be made as desired by those skilled in the art without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claim.

FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of the multiple section plate stamp of this invention shown with a sliding insert section thereof in a printing position.
FIGURE 2 is a right-hand end view of the stamp of FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the main body section of the stamp as it would be seen substantially from the bottom and right-hand side of FIGURE 1 with insert section removed.

The stamp assembly 10 consists principally of a main body 12 with handle 14 and has an outermost or lowermost primary stamping or printing surface 16. The main body 12 has a cavity 18 with grooves 20. A sliding insert 22 has an insert handle 24, ribs 26, a secondary stamping surface 28, and an additional stamping surface 31 The sliding insert 22 shown in FIGURE 5 can be inseited into the cavity 18 in such a manner that the ribs 26 will glide in grooves 20. By having a snug fit between the ribs 26 and grooves 24), the sliding insert 22 is securely held in the main body 12 of the stamp 10, as shown in FIGURES 1; 2, and 3.
The primary purpose of being able to remove the sliding insert 22 from the main body 12 is to transfer one color to the primary stamping surface 16 and another color to the secondary stamping surface 26, and an additional stamping surface 36 when the sliding insert 22 and the main body 12 are separated. By replacing the sliding insert 22 in the cavity 18 of the main body 12, the primary stamping surface 16 and secondary stamping surface 20 as well as the additional stamping surface 30, are all in one plane and it is thereby possible to stamp two colors at one time with one stamp.
In the design illustrated, the stripes of a flag are adapted to be printed by a resilient lower printing covering portion 82 of the main body section 12 of the stamp; whereas the sliding insert section 22 of the stamp carries on its undersurface a resilient stamp-printing portion 83 having an outermost or lowermost stamping or printing surface 2 adapted to print stars 9% the second stamping surface 30 adapted to print a fiagstaff $4.
It will be seen that each printing surface 16 or 28 substantially lies in the same plane during stamping for the simultaneous printing of a composite design by the main body or main body section 12 and by the sliding insert section 22 with a single stamping motion.
The interlocking sliding surfaces represented by the walls of the grooves 20 and the outer surfaces of the ribs 26 are disposed for maintaining the printing surfaces 16 and in the same plane during stamping and for permitting the insert section to be slidably moved with respect to the main body sufficiently to permit the independent inking of such sections with different colors preparatory to the placing of the sections together in printing position as shown in FIGURES 1 and 3.
It will be seen that the entire stamp is of a size for convenient use of a hand stamp and is not to be confused with plates for printing machines and the like as regards size. It is further distinguished by the presence of handles 22 and 24 not similarly represented in prior art plates for printing machines.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a sliding section stamp constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use, by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention can be changed and modified without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason, I do not wish -to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as claimed.
I claim:
A multiple section hand stamp assembly for the simultaneous printing of a unitary composite design of differing colors; said stamp assembly comprising a main printing section having a body portion provided with opposing surfaces and a periphery, one of said surfaces being formed partially with printing characters defining a main printing surface, said body portion being formed with a cavity opening through the periphery and having spaced opposing Walls, said cavity opening through the one of said surfaces so that the printing characters cover less than the entire cross-sectional area of the one of said surfaces, at least one secondary printing section having a body portion provided with wall portions slidable relative to the walls of the cavity in the body portion of the main printing section, interlocking means provided between the walls and the wall portions to releasably secure the secondary printing section in place in the cavity, said body portion of the secondary printing section having a surface provided with printing characters thereon and defining, when the printing sections are in assembled relation, a secondary printing surf-ace coplanar with and complemental to the main printing surface for the simultaneous printing of the composite design by said printing surfaces with a single stamping action, said body portion of the secondary printing section being slidable in the cavity through the peripheral opening of the cavity in a plane parallel to the coplanar plane in which the printing surfaces lie when the printing sections are in assembled relation, a handle element extending from the body portion of the secondary printing section and disposed out of the plane in which the printing surface of the secondary printing section lies, said handle element extending beyond the periphery of the body portion of the main printing section when the printing sections are in assembled relation so that the handle element can be used to effect a quick assembly and disassembly of the printing sections and to permit an independent inking of the printing surface of the secondary printing section when it is free from the main printing section and a handle extending from the otherof the said surfaces of the body portion of the main printing section for independent inking of the printing surface of the main printing section with the secondary printing section removed therefrom and for effecting simultaneous stamping of both the printing surfaces when the printing sections are in assembled relation so as to obtain the printing of the composite design in a single stamping action.
