The present invention relates to improvements in means for securing stereotype plates to the cylinder of a printing press, andthe object of the invention is to providea simple but durable means for effectively connecting the plates andcylinder so that relative move ment between them, either axially of the cylinder or circumferentially thereof will be positively prevented.
The invention is particularly applicable for use with presses employed for printing newspapers, asby it a material reduction in the amount of margin or space required at the fold of a sheet may be secured.
An embodiment of the invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, butit is to beunderfstood that there can be considerable modification or change in details from-the form illustrated without departing from theinvention, and'except where specifically referred to in the appended claims, the invention is not-intended to be limited to the exact arrangement shown.

Referring to the draw-1ng,.1n the several figures of which like parts are designated by theisame reference characters,-1 designates a printing press cylinderfwhich is shown as provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending channels adapted to receive clips for securing,stereotype-plates 2 radially against the surface of thecylinder. securing clips are held against movement radially of the cylinder but may be adjusted longitudinally of the channels as desired to cooperate. with plates of diflerent widths.
The improved clip comprises a body .3 adapted to be received in and extend through i any of the aforesaid channels formed in the printing cylinder and having at'its inner end flanges 4, which are received in marginal extensions of said grooves, so that the clip cannot be radially disengaged from the printing cylinder; As shown, the clip :bodyis of substantially rectangular form in cross section and of substantially the same width as the channel on which it fits. T At the outer end of the body 3 the clip is provided with a member 5, of substantially triangular form in crosssection having oppositely beveled faces, either of which is adapted to' cooperate with the inclined or beveled edge 10 of a stereotype plate 11, in substantially the same manner. as the clipsor plate securing means commonly employed.
. The member 5 is of greater length than the body-'3 of the clip, so that portions thereof project beyond opposite ends of said body.
The member 5 and body 3 of the clip are unlted by portions 6, which project laterally from the junction'of the member and thejbody 1 and the outer face of each of which is substantially perpendicular to the top surface of .the body 3 .and parallel to the sides of the body.
The laterally projecting web 6 extends I throughout the length of the clip body 3and' is adapted to fit in a notch 12 formed in the beveled edge 10 of the stereotype plate.
As shown in the drawing, the depth of the tion in such notch, the end wallsbeing in contact will effectively prevent movement of the plate over the surface of the cylinder.
It will'be seen that-theimproved clip acts,
by reason of the contact ofone of itsinclined faces with the beveled edge of the plate, to bind a plate radially against the printing cylinder; and, by reason of the en ment longitudinally thereof by any suitable means in the ordinary, usual manner.
As Wlll be evident fro-m Figures 2 and 3,
. theimprovements enable two plates 11 to be positioned in closer relation than has been possible with the securing means heretofore commonly employed. Two plates corresponding to the opposed pages of a folded sheet can be positioned so that the lower edges of the beveled sides 10 thereof will abut beneath the bottom edge of the member 5 (as shown in Figure 3) and thereby the blank space or margin at the fold, or between such pages, can be reduced to a minimum.
It will be seen that the width of the unprinted margin orofold will depend upon the distance between the plate engaging faces or sides of the member 5 of the clip. Instead of making this member of the form of asubstantially equal-lateral triangle, as shown, it may be made of isosceles shape in cross-section with the base or outer face of less width than the plate engaging faces.
By the invention, a clip is provided which will exert a maximum amount of radial pressure on the plates, and in addition by the projections 6 is positively inter-locked with the plates, preventing movement thereof over the surface of the cylinder.
The notches 12 may be formed in the plates 11 either when such plates are initially cast or at anysubsequent time.
For example, in casting such plates in a hand box, it is merely necessary to add a projecting part which will form the notch when the plate is cast. With another type of casting box, wherein the bevel on the plate is cast atthe bottom and a saw is employed for providing the top bevel as the plate is turned in moving from the box, the revolving cylinder would be provided with projecting pieceswhich slideover a groove when it en- ;ters the part where the casting occurs. With this type of apparatus, two projections would be provided for each plate, one being inside of the box when the plate is being cast, while the other is outside when the plate is being removed, the outer projectionsturning intothe castlng box as the cast plate 1s removed therefrom. I V 7 It is believed that the manner ofusing and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description in connection with the drawing. I claim:
1. The combination of a plate cylinder, a-
plate thereon, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and adapted to exert pressure radially on the plate to clamp it to the cylinder, said plate and clip being also connected by a member on one engaging a recess on the other, whereby the plate is held from movement over the surface of the cylinder.
- The combination of a plate cylinder, a plate thereon having a beveled edge, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and h( ving a beveled surface adapted to cooperate with the beveled edge of the plate to clamp the latter radially against the cylinder, said plate and clip having also an interenga-ging projection and recess whereby movement of the plate over the surface of the cylinder is prevented.
3. The combination of a plate cylinder, a plate thereon having a beveled edge, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and having a beveled surface adapted to cooperate with the beveled. edge of the plate to clamp the latter radially against the cylinder, one of said beveled portions being provided with a recess and the other with a projection fitting said recess and preventing movement of the plate over the surface of the cylinder.
4. The combination of a plate cylinder, a
plate thereon having a beveled edge provid ed with a recess, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and having a beveled surface contacting with the beveled edge of the plate, on both sides of the recess therein, and a projection fitting in said recess, whereby the plate is clamped against the cylinder and positively held from movement over the surface of the cylinder.
5. The combination of a plate cylinder, a
plate thereon having a beveledredge which is provided with a notch of less depth than the beveled surface, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and having a portion fitting in said notch and a beveled surface that contacts with the beveled surface of the edge of the plate throughout the length of and at opposite sides of the notch, for the purpose described.

plate thereon having a notch formed in an edge which has a beveled surface at an end of the notch, and a clip mounted on the cylinder and having a portion fitted in said notch and a beveled surface extending from said portion over the beveled surface of the edge of the plate ad acent the purpose described.

9. The combination of a plate cylinder, a plate thereon and a clip mounted on and projecting radialy from the cylinder and provided at its outer end with a member extending circumferentially of the cylinder and having a beveled face, adapted to cooperate with an edge of the plate to clamp the plate against the cylinder, and an element of means, comprising a projection and cooperating recess, for interlocking the clip and plate to prevent movement of the latter over the surface of the cylinder, the beveled surfaced member projecting beyond opposite sides of the clip body and having the lower edges of its projecting end portions radially spaced from the cylinder a distance in excess of that separating the cylinder and the means for interlocking the clip and plate.
10. A clip to hold printing plates in position on a plate cylinder comprising a body, adapted to be secured at its base to a cylinder, having a beveled surface adapted to con tact with a beveled edge of a printing plate to clamp such plate radially against the cylinder, and with a projection adapted to engage a recess in the plate to prevent movement of the latter over the surface of the cylinder.
11. A. clip to hold printing plates in posiadapted to be secured at its base to a cylinder, having at its upper end a beveled face adapted to engage the beveled edge of a printing plate and clamp the plate radially against a cylinder and provided adjacent said beveled face with a shoulder adapted to engage a cooperating part on the plate to prevent movement of the plate over the surface of the cylinder.
12. A clip to hold printing plates in position on a plate cylinder comprising a body, adapted to be secured at its base to a cylinder, having at its upper end a member which has oppositely inclined faces diverging outward from its lower edge to provide beveled surfaces adapted to engage beveled edges of printing plates, between which the clip is positioned, to clamp said plates radially against a cylinder, said clip body being provided adjacent each of the beveled surfaces thereon with one element of means, comprising a projection and cooperating recess, for positively interlocking the clip and plate to prevent movement of the latter over the surface of the cylinder.
13. A clip to hold printing plates in position on a plate cylinder comprising a body, adapted to be secured atits base to a cylinder,
having at its upper end a member which has oppositely inclined faces'diverging outward from its lower edge to provide beveled surfaces adapted to engage beveled edges of printing plates, between which the clip is positioned, to clamp said plates radially against a cylinder, said clip body being provided adjacent each of the beveled surfaces thereon with one element of means, comprising a projection and cooperating recess, for positively interlocking the clip and plate to prevent movement of the latter over the surface of the cylinder, the beveled surfaces of the clip being of such length that they project beyond opposite sides of the clip body.
