The present invention refers to a garter purse and relates more particularly to a purse of the type adapted to fit inside a ladys stocking and be attached to a garter button.

An object of the present invention is to provide various improvements over the previous garter purse described in Patent 2,072,352 of 1937. Said improvements include a purse which will lie flatter inside the stocking.

Another improvement is the manner of providing closure means for said purse, which means will not involve the addition of fastening elements to the purse.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of a purse of extreme simplicity and economy of manufacture.

In accomplishing the objects of the present invention, a purse was provided comprising two flexible lightweight wall members joined together along the two sides and an end to form a purse body and each extending upward to form tabs from the body. One of said tabs is shorter than the other, broader at its base portion and formed with a slot near its base. The other tab is led through said slot and is further formed with a slot in spaced relation to said first mentioned slot and an opening for a button above and in spaced relation to said second mentioned slot. The first tab is led through said second mentioned slot, it being remembered that the second slot is in the second tab which has been led through the first tab previously. The purse may now be fastened to the garter by the buttonhole or opening, it being immaterial which side of the purse is worn outward. This last feature is advantageous in that the two elements constituting the purse may be of difierent colors, such as black and white, and that color may be Worn outward which is least conspicuous.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:

Fig. 1 is a schematic view, the purse being worn under a stocking and attached to a garter.

Fig. 2 is a perspective front view of the purse.

Fig. 3 is a perspective rear view thereof.

Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the purse in open or unclosed position.

Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the first step in closing the purse.

Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the purse completely closed and: engaged by a-garter, the latter being shown in broken'lines.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the improved purse II] comprises the two lightweight flexible wall elements I I and I2 of sheet material, such as leather, cloth or plastic. These elements II and I2 are joined along the two longitudinal edge portions and the bottom edge portion by stitching I3 to form a purse body open at the top. Front element or member I I is formed with a tab I4 which is quite broad at its base and formed with the slot I5 at said base. Tab I4 has a tip portion I6 considerably narrower than the body thereof. Element I2 comprises a long tab II which just fits slot I5 at a corresponding point in its own length and then broadens considerably as at I8. Tab I1 is formed with a slot I9 in spaced relation to slot I5 longitudinally of purse l0 and tip portion I6 of tab I4 is led through slot I9 thereby emerging on the same side of tab I! as its parent sheet I I; that is to say, the front of Fig. 3. Tab I1 is further formed with the buttonhole 20.

It is evident from the above that the improved purse I0 lies substantially flat in all positions, the

sheet II and I2 being of lightweight and flexible construction and devoid of substantial bulk and rigidity. The button 2I of a garter 22 may therefore be inserted into buttonhole 20 from either the front or rear of the purse. The terms front and rear being used merely to identify rather than distinguish, as the purse is equally serviceable no matter which sheet thereof is worn outside. This being the case, the sheets II and I2 may conveniently be of different colored material so that the wearer may wear the purse so as to be inconspicuous or conspicuous according to desire, taste or fancy.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

I. In a garter purse, in combination, two light weight, flexible sheets of material joined together around their border portions to form a purse body open at the top, each of said sheets comprisin a tab portion extending above said body, one of said tabs being comparatively broad at its base and being formed with a slot substantially at said base,
