G. B. DENNIS v FACE POWDER AND PUFF CONTAINER Filed Dec. 18, 1944 IN VEN TOR.
4 TTOENEK Patented July .27, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE"- Application December 18, 1944, Serial No. 568,609
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to containers in the nature of those designed to carry a supply of bulk powder and a powder puff, and the primary aim is to provide a handy, convertible container, having structure whereby the box of powder may be held in place for use when the lid of the container body is opened, or held in place with the top of the bulk powder container clamped in a closed condition for packing or handling.
Other objects of the invention include the specific manner in which the bulk powder container may be manipulated; the form and disposition of the powder puff pocket; and the relation between the said pocket and bulk powder container when the latter is held for normal use.
Further aims of this invention will appear during the course of the following specification, referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a face powder and puff container made to embody the instant invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the container showing the lid thereof in an open condition.
Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view through the container with the bulk powder receptacle clamped in place and in a tightly closed condition; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, but with the bulk powder container in an open condition where the contents thereof are accessible when the swinging lid of the body is open.
A container for face powder and the puff should include means for safely carrying a supply of powder and elements for rendering the supply of powder accessible when the powder box is to be an ornamental fixture on a dressing table.
The form of the invention chosen for illustration, comprises a body having an open top and bottom, the former being closed by a lid l2, while the open bottom may be closed by the cover l4.
Lid IZ-is hingedly connected as at It to body I0 and has a latch is yieldably holding the lid in the position shown in Fig. 3. This lid I2 is designed to present a pocket formed between a partial partition 22 and the inner surf-ace of lid l2. Partition 22 is contoured at its free edge to permit the thumb of the operator to grasp puff 24 with ease and convenience. An indentation 26 provided in partition 22 at its center, insures that pufi 24 may be withdrawn from pocket 20 while the fingers are against the central portion of one side of the puff and in a, place where it is usable as an applicator. This partition 22 is fixed to swinging lid 12 and therefore, moves therewith.
Cover [4 has a continuous annular flange 28 at its periphery and internal screw-threads on this flange 28 mate with external screw-threads on body It to removably hold cover I l in place. A continuous annular lip 30 formed to lie in a plane just below partition 22 when lid [2 is closed, is spaced from cover M a distance substantially the same as the height of bulk powder container 32.
This container 32 has a top 34 of the telescoping type and may be moved from the position shown in Fig. 3, to that illustrated in Fig. 4. When top 34 is closing container 32, it is held in place by pressure exerted from cover I4-thus, the bulk powder container 32 is packed for transportation and handling and danger of powder escaping therefrom is overcome.
When the user of the powder box desires to make available the bulk powder within container 32, top 34 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 4, and the container is replaced with its open end directed upwardly toward tthe top of the assembly. Thus, puiiZ l may be dipped into the powder within container 32 when lid I2 is in the position 1 shown in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that all of the parts of the face powder and puff container may be made as decorative as desired and that the container 32 may be sold separately as a, re-fill.
Such changes and modifications as may be within the scope of the appended claim are readily conceivable by those skilled in the art, and it is desired, therefore, to be limited only by the invention as defined in said claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A face powder and puff container comprising an open top and open bottom cylindrical body; an internal continuous lip on the body intermediate the said open top and open bottom thereof; a lid hingedly mounted on the body for swinging movement to and from a position closing the open top of the body; fiat, substantiallysemicircular wall on the innermost face of said lid and parallel thereto, said wall being spaced from the lid and having a lateral flange extending the length of its curved periphery and joined to the lid whereby :to present a pocket for a powder puff; a cover in screw-threaded engagement with the body to close the open bottom thereof; an open top powder container within the body between the lip and the open bottom of the body; and a top fittable over either the open top of the container or the bottom thereof, the distance between the lip and the open bottom of the body being less than the depth of said container whereby the container is compressed between the cover and the lip when the top of the container is on the bottom thereof, on its top, or entirely removed, said wall forming the pocket being parallel to the lip when the lid is closed and being spaced from the lid a, distance substantially the same as the distance between the lip and the open top of the body.
