REMOVABLE TRAY FOR TRAVELERS HAGS. 1
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14., 1919.
Application filed September 3, 181.8. Serial No. 252,371.
' main objects the provision of a device of this character which is exceedingly simple in construction although of great utility, the tray beingso constructed asnot to require any side supports or hangersfor the same when in use.
A. further object of the device is the pro-' vision of a tray for carrying small articles and adapted for arrangement withina traveling bag upon the larger contents thereof,
. such as clothing, and provided with cutout til portions in the ends, of the trayfor reception of the infolding ends of the traveling bag to securely maintain the tray in position.
With the above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ,aceompanying drawing nd claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this application, wherein like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is an elevational view of a traveling bag with the present invention arranged therein, a portion of the traveling bag being broken away and a portion of the tray being illustrated in longitudinal section.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially upon line Il[-l[l of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail fragmentary view taken substantially upon line H l[HI of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the tray detached, and
Fig. 5 is an end view of a, modified form of tray which may be used.
Referring more in detail to the several views, an ordinary traveling bag 5 is shownv having the usual hinged frame 6 at the top thereof consisting in two parts which are swung toward each other for closing the bag, said frame being maintained closed by suitable locking means 7 and 8 as shown in Fig. 1.
In traveling bags of this character, the
closing of the frame 6 produces an infolding of the'leather or other material constituting the body of the bag as shown at 9 in Figs. 1 and '2 and the present tray 10 has the ends thereof cut out as at 11 to accommodate these infolded portions.
The upper portion or sides of the bag 5 are usually inclined as at 12 and in order to accommodate the tray 10 in this portion of the bag, the sides 13 of the tray 10 are inthe tray sides when the bag is closed.
The corners of the tray 10 are preferably rounded as at 14 to enable the tray to be readily inserted within the bag and to allow a slight distortion of the body of the bag in order to be completely filled, at which time the corner portion 15 of the bag 5 may move clined inwardly so as to prevent damage to into contact with the corners 14 of the tray.
In order to provide for the ready removal .of the tray 10, suitable tapes 16 are attached to the ends of the tray 10, which tapes may bereadily engaged by the fingers to readily lift the device and thereby remove the same from the bag 5.
In the use of the form of the invention above described, the traveling bag 5 is usually well packed with clothing 17 in the bottom portion thereof and the tray 10 is then placed inside of the bag so as to rest upon the clothing 17 in substantially the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tray may then be filled with small articles neces sarily carried by travelers such as brushes, shaving brushes, soap, small books, etc, and
then the bag is closed so that the infolded portions 9 engage the edges of the cut out portions 11 so as to securely maintain the in'Fig. 5, the tray 10' has the ends thereof cut out as at 11 to accommodate the infolded portions 9 of the bag and the ends of tlie tray. l0. are also providedwith tapes 16 forming handles somewhat similar to the handles 16 hereinbefore described. The
tray 10 is provided with sides 13' which are not sloped inwardly so that the tray may be utilized to advantage if placed slightly farther down into the bag 5 than the tray 10 is positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This form of tray will also be found useful in traveling bags which are not provided with slanting upper portions 12,. I
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and utility of the present invention will be readily understood, it being noted that the bag 5 is opened at the top thereof andthe tray is p ac'e'd in the bag after other articles such as '2 clothing; etc., are packed therein.
It will be apparent that the present invention presents a tray for travelers which is of great convenience and utility and which may be manufactured at a nominal cost.-
While the forms of the invention herein the end walls thereof cut out for reception of the infolding ends of the traveling bag.
2. A removable tray for travelers bags comprising an open-top receptacle having the end walls thereof cut out for reception of the infolding ends of the traveling bag,
and handle forming tapes upon the ends of said tray adjacent the cut-ou portions thereof.
3. A removable tray for travelers bags comprising a receptacle having the end walls thereof cut out for the reception of the infolding ends of said travelers bag, and handles upon said tray.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. ISAAC SHRUM.
