UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV KAUFMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. e
ClGAR-TI P CUTTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,679, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed November 5, 1880.
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUsTAv KAUEMANN, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cutting Off the Tips of Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the combination, in a cigar-cutter, of a holder or receptacle for the tip of a cigar, and a U-shaped, V-shaped, or angular knife adapted to be manipulated so as to cut off the tip and make a U-shaped or V-shaped incision in the end of a cigar whence the tip is removed. An advantage of such an incisionis, that a large surface through which air may be drawn is afforded, and yet the taper contour of the end of the cigar is retained. Another advantage is, that nicotine will he apt to remain at the cut surfaces, and hence will be less apt to come in contact with the mouth of the smoker.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, and also of a cigar delineated by dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a side view thereof'.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a holder or receptacle for the tip of a cigar. It maybe made of a wire ring o f suitable size, and its function is merely to hold the tip of a cigar while being cut.
B designates two side bars, which may also be made of wire, and are bent around at the ends to form bearings a, for the reception of trunnions b, whereby the shank C of the knife C is pivoted to them, so that it may havea vibratory action relatively to the holder or receptacle A. This knife C is a knife which is V-shaped, or composed of two wings joined at an angle to each other and sharpened at one end. This knife moves between the bars B, which serve as guides to direct it in its movements, and it makes a V-shaped incision in the end of the cigar in removing the tip.
The shank C of the knife may be provided with a stop consisting of a cross-pin, c, which (No model.)
laps over the bars B, and prevents the shank of the knife and the knife itself from passing too far between them. The shank of the knife may also be provided with a stop, to prevent it from moving too far outward.
I do not confine myself to the particular construction of the holder or receptacle A, the bars B, or the method of pivoting the knife to them, as various modifications of all may be made.
The holder or receptacle may be made in the shape of a socket conforming to the tip of a cigar, so as to support it more effectually when subjected to the action of the knife.
A back plate, A', is preferably in all cases employed opposite the knife for resisting the act-ion of the knife, or, in other words, for preventing the cigar from moving out of place when the knife comes in contact with it.
The device may form a complete article, or may be combined with a knife or other pocket article or other article.
It is obvious that a second U-shaped or V- shaped knife may be employed in lieu of the back plate, A', or a socket, and that two such knives may be connected by levers like ordinary pinchers. In such case each knife forms a resistance to the action of the other, and the space between the knives would form a holder or receptacle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a cigar-cutter, ot' a holder or receptacle for the tip of acigar, and a U -shaped or V-shaped or angular knife adapted to be manipulated so as to cut oi' the tip of a cigar and make a U-shaped or V-shaped incision in the end, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the holder or receptacle A, bars or guides B, the U-shaped or V-shaped knife C, and shank C', pivoted to said bars, substantially as specified.
