J; TALBOT..
GIGAR. PBRPORATOR. No. 268,960 Patented Dec. l2, 1882..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN TALBOT, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
ClGAR-PERFORATOR.
SP-ECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,960, dated December 12, 1882.,
Application filed September 18, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, JOHN TALBOT, of -Saorameuto, county of Sacramento, State of Galifornia, have invented an Improved Cigar-Perforator; and I hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description thereof.
' My invention relates to a device for perforatiug the tips of cigars so as to provide a draft through the cigar without cutting ott' the end; and it consists of a pair of semi-conical jaws hinged together, so that they may be opened and closed by handles or otherwise. Within these jaws are a series of projecting pins, which, when the end of a cigar isinserted and the jaws closed, will perforate the cigartip transversely.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of my device in a portable form. Fig. 2 is a view showing it fitted to a stand for counter use.
A A are two jaws, yhaying handles B. The Shanks cross each other and are pivoted like a pair of shears, fso that the jaws may be separated or brought together by the action of the handles. Thesejawsareeachmadeinthel'orrn of a hollow semi-cone, and have pins or perforators C fixed in them, so as to cross each other transversely at a sufficientdistance apart when the jaws are closed to perforate the cigar-tipsv from opposite sides and iu asuflicient number of places to give a free draft. This arrangement is superior to any perforation from one side alone, because it forms a greater number (No model.)
of holes and at a number of different points,
which insures a more certain and free draf't. When it is desired to employ it upon a counter or in a fixedposition the handles behind `theV pivot may be omitted and the lower jaw be fixed within a suitable standard.
The upper jaw may have a loop or eye, hat the top and be connected With a stem,c, which extends up through the top of the standard, having a knob at the top by which it may be depressed whenever desired. A spiral ,or other spring, F, returns it when released.
The standard may have an opening at the side just iu front of the perforating-ja'ws, into which the top of the cigar is thrust, and the knob depressed, thus perfor-ating the tip, as before described.
I am aware that perforating devices have been employed in which needles have been forced through the cigar-tip from one side, and, I do not claim' broadly such a construction; but
What Ido claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- A cigar-perforator consisting of the pivoted semi-conical jaws A, provided on their interior faces with pins c, in combination with operating handles, as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto sel: my hand.
JOHN TALBOT.
