J. W. MAILLOT. COMBINED MATCH BOX AND GIGAR TIP CUTTER. No. 499,129. Patented June 6, 1893.
I G "56) j 0 imerz;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. MAILLOT, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX AND CIGAR=TIP CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,129, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed November 28, 1892- Serial No. 453,353. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. MAILLOT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Tip Gutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved match box and cigar cutter. It is of that class in which the cover is provided with a transverse opening, for the admission of the tip of the cigar, and the box with a blade arranged in a plane transverse to said spring.
My invention consists in details of construction all hereinafter set forth. These details are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1, shows the box in side elevation with the cover closed, and part of the wall removed to show the details. Fig. 2, is a similar view, with the cover raised. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional view of the cover.
In the drawings M, indicates the body of the box, which may be, as shown, of ordinary shape. It has a cover N, hinged at 0, on the rear edge. The knife A, is a thin blade, which is a part of the upper end of a spring shank F. The lower end of this shank is held by means of a socket p, in which it is insorted from above, the socket being fixed to the inner wall at the rear edge. The knife is thus made removable for sharpening. The cover of the box has the usual transverse openings 0, one on each side. These are both made flaring outward by swaging in the metal of the cover, as shown in Fig. 3, which forms short funnel shaped projections, extending inward toward each other with a smooth rounded flare outwardly. The blade is arranged nearer to one, and so as to act with a shearing cut, as the cover moves with the cigar, past the blade. The tip of the cigar extends across into the opposite funnel and when severed is turned out, by reason of the smooth and even flare of the interior surface. I-Ieretofore these projections have been formed by soldering in short tapering tubes, but this construction leaves an edge and is not so economical to make nor so effective. The upper part of the cover carries a peg B, which when the cover is closed, extends down in rear of the spring shank of the knife. When the cover is opened the peg is thrown forward and bears against the rear of the shank and presses it forward, thus moving the knife in a direction opposite to the movement of the cover and cigar. This quickens the cutting movement, and shearing action of the knife. The peg is better formed upon a block shown in Fig. 2. This block forms the upper part of the hinge and is soldered in the rear edge of the cover.
. A bar D, is placed across the box in front of the knife, to limit its movement.
In swaging the cover I make the upper back corner to conform to the holes and on the front edge form a boss Ir, which affords a bearing for the thumb in opening the box and cutting the tip. The knife shank and peg also form the spring, which holds the cover closed. The knife may be easily removed for sharpening and as easily replaced.
1. In combination with a match-box having a cover provided with an opening the knife arranged in described relation to the opening in the cover, and having a spring shank, a peg carried by the cover and operating upon the spring shank, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a match box having a pivoted cover provided with a perforation, a spring located within the box having a knife blade rigidly mounted upon its upper end, and means carried by the cover acting upon the spring for holding said cover normally closed, and forcing the knife across the perforation as the cover is opened, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. MAILLOT.
