Description

March 21, 1944. J, DE GRAY TROUSER HANGER Filed July 21, 1941 INVENTOR L/EeEM/AH 0: Gen) BY AM, Maw
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Mar. 21, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TROUSER HANGER Jeremiah De Gray, Milwaukee, Wis. Application July 21, 1941, Serial No. 403,286
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in trouser hangers.
The object of my invention is to provide a trouser hanger for cuffed trousers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a trouser hanger wherein the supporting elements to directly receive the trousers are adjustable for various sizes of garments.
Another object of my invention is to provide a trouser hanger with members to be received in the cuffs of the trousers to support the weight and preserve the correct shape and appearance of the garment and yet provide for adjustment without possibility of maladjustment or misalignment of the surfaces which bear directly against the garment material.
It will be noted from the following description that my trouser hanger is particularly constructed for cheapness and sturdiness so as to provide my improved features at small cost.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective of my trouser hanger.
Figure 2 is a view showing in a transverse section the cuff supporting portion of the trouser hanger of Fig. 1 as it appears with fragmentary portions of the legs of a pair of trousers mounted thereon.
Figure 3 is a perspective of an alternative form of trouser hanger embodying some features of my invention, the View showing a fragmentary portion of the cufis of a pair of trousers mounted thereon.
Like parts are designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
In the preferred form of my invention a supporting member of hook-like configuration extends upwardly from the central portion of a bar II which may be made of wood, or plastic, or other suitable relatively rigid material. At either end of the bar II, a kerf [2 extends inwardly from the end of the bar approximately one-fourth of the bar length and adjacent the upper surface thereof. Into each of these kerfs is fitted a, web of a cuff wing clamp l3 which includes an inverted U-shaped clamp portion to embrace the bar II. At either side of the U- shaped clamp I provide upwardly extending cuii wings IS. A pair of trouser legs |6-l| having cuffs I8 are receivable upon the cuff Wings l as indicated most clearly in Figure 2 where it will be seen that my hanger is received between the trouser legs l6|1, and the cuff wings extend to the extreme end IQ of the trouser leg within the cuff so as to support the pair of trousers.
Obviously, trousers are of various widths at their bottoms I9, and by means of the construction illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, I provide for the various sizes of the trousers by making my cuff wing clamps slidable and frictionally mov able upon the bar II. The cuff wing clamp is, therefore, movable from the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 to the full line position, and the cuff wing clamp at the other end of the bar is likewise adjustably movable as desired.
The top margins of my cuff Wings are horizontal when the hanger is supported by the hook Ill. The outer margins of the wings are positioned in any degree of adjustment to bear against the inside of the crease of the trousers, therefore, there is no tendency when adjustment is desired to vary the angle at which the clips bear against the goods of which the trousers are made.
By making the U-shaped portion M of my cuff winged clamps out of material which is somewhat resilient, I provide for a clamping action between the cuff Wing clamps l3 and the bar ll so as to obtain clamping action upon the body of the bar H rather than to provide a splitting tendency which would prevail if the web cuff wing clamp were frictionally engaged in the kerf. In accord with my invention, the kerf is sufiiciently wide so that there is no binding action between the bar, and the web of the U-shaped clamp I4 which extends across the kerf.
The alternative form of my invention may be made of wire and include central hook 25 with its shank, and outwardly and downwardly extended resilient wing wires 26 and 21, each of which terminates in an upward cuff-receiving bracket 28. At the outer end of the cuff-receiving bracket 28, the wire is downwardly extended to a U-shaped trouser-leg bracket 29 to receive pressed creased margins of both legs |6-l1 of a pair of trousers, and this U-shaped bracket 29 terminates at its upper portion in a cuff-receiving terminal 30 so this alternative form of trouser hanger engages the outside of each trouser cuff, and the U-shaped portion 29 embraces the trouser leg.
Thus, I provide a principal and an alternative form of trouser hanger which engages in the cuffs of trousers hanging in inverted position, the principal form'of the invention providing for an adjustable exceedingly cheap device in which the hanger is disposed between the trouser legs, and the wings l5 are inserted in the cuffs 0n the inside faces thereof and the alternative form in which the hanger provides cuffreceiving brackets and terminals which engage in the outside folds of the cuff of each trouser leg.
I claim:
A trouser hanger having a supporting memher, a cross bar extending therefrom in either direction, said cross bar having a, kerf extending inwardly from either end thereof, an inverted U-shaped clamp receivable in each of said kerf ends of the cross bar with the intermediate web of the U extended across the bar in said kerf, and the legs of the U being clampingly engaged upon the her, said legs as to the free ends thereof being outwardly and upwardly extended to be received in the cuffs of trousers.
JEREMIAH DE GRAY.
