Description
March 28, 1961 H. T. GARRISON ATTACHMENT FOR A GARMENT HANGER Filed June 6, 1958 IN VENTOR HOWARDT.GARRI5ON BY A W ,Wfi ATTORNEYS Howard T. Garrison, 444 Lakewood Circle, Virginia Beach, Va.
Filed June 6, 1958, Ser. No. 740,229
1 Claim. (Cl. 223-88) The present invention relates to a garment hanger and more in particular to an attachment for the usual wire coat hanger, said attachment to be used for hanging trousers and skirts.
Heretofore many attachments have been devised to permit the more satisfactory storage of clothing on the usual wire coat hanger. These devices have found extensive use in the storage of clothing, the trousers usually being passed over the horizontal bar and many methods have been tried to prevent the trousers or skirts from taking a crease where they are draped over this bar. Many of these prior devices have consisted of a sharpened prong which is forced through the clothing to suspend the same from the coat hanger. This has proven unsatisfactory because it damages the garment. Still other devices have been attachments that hang on the sloping part of the coat hanger and these devices have proven unsatisfactory because of the difficulty in retaining them in position.
The present invention overcomes these difficulties by providing means for suspending the trousers or skirts without passing the same over the bar.
It is an object of this invention to provide a clip which may be applied to the usual wire coat hanger to allow the same to be used in the storage of skirts and trousers.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a clip that may be applied to a coat hanger wherein the combination may be used to support a garment suspended from the clip either by the waist band or the cuff.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a clip that may be suspended from a wire coat hanger so as to support a pair of trousers from the cuff and to retain the same in such a manner that the trousers or skirt will not sag between the clips.
The various features of novelty which characterize this invention are pointed out with particularity in the claim annexed to and forming part of this specification. For a better understanding of the invention however, its advantages and specific objects obtained by its use, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings and descriptive matter in which have been illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of this invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view, showing the method of using the clip of the present invention for hanging trousers from a wire hanger.
Fig. 2 is an end view of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clip without the hanger.
In Figure 1 has been illustrated a desirable embodiment of the present invention comprising a pair of wire clips 10, attached to the horizontal portion 11 of a coat hanger 9, in the manner illustrated. These clips firmly grip the horizontal portion 11 in such a manner as to hold the same in position on this horizontal portion. Each clip 10, shown in detail in Fig. 5 consists of rates Patent 0 Fatented Mar. 28, 1961 an end portion of a generally double-U shape having a central inverted U, 12, and an upright U-shaped portion 13 on each side thereof. These two end portions are attached together by means of the horizontal bar portion 14, 14. 1
In assembling this device two of these clips 10, 10 are placed on the cross bar 11 as shown in Fig. 1, the central inverted U-shaped portion 12 firmly gripping the central bar 11, as shown in Fig. 3. The horizontal body portion 14, 14 lies parallel to and spaced from the horizontal portion 11 of the coat hanger. The cufis 15, 15 of a pair of trousers are hung one on each side of the clip 10 as shown in Fig. 4, so that the clips may be separated and the cuff drawn tight as shown in Fig. 1. This permits the hanging of a pair of trousers from a wire coat hanger without folding the same over the bar and it is therefore impossible for the garment to acquire a crease due to being hung in storage. A skirt may be suspended in the same manner, the waist band on each side of the skirt being hung from the clip in a manner similar to that described above for hanging a pair of trousers.
The cuff on a pair of trousers is a return portion of the trouser leg. The waist band on a skirt is a return portion of the skirt top and this term is so used in the claims.
While in the above description of a preferred embodiment of this invention a wire clip is described, it is to be noted that the invention is not limited to a wire clip, as the clip may be made of sheet metal, plastic or reinforced fiber board as desired. The hanger is incidental to the clip and any type of hanger having a bar or hori-' zontal portion between two sloping portions may be used.
While in accordance with the provisions of the statutes the best form of embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the form of the apparatus without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claim, and that in some cases certain features of this invention may be I used to advantage without the corresponding use of other features, and that this invention is only limited by the claim attached hereto, wherein:
What is claimed is:
The combination of a garment hanger having a horizontal rod-shaped member supported by and between two sloping members and a pair of substantially similar spaced wire clips disengageably mounted on said horizontal rod-shaped member, each clip comprising two generally parallel central elements, said elements having at their ends two adjacent U-shaped portions, the tops of the intermediate arms of each of said adjacent U-shaped portions being joined to form an inverted U-shaped portion between said U-shaped portions, the space between said joined arms being narrower at the juncture thereof than the diameter of said horizontal rod-shaped member, said joined arms receiving in frictional engagement the horizontal rod-shaped member of said garment hanger, said wire clips being engageable on said garment hanger at various points along the length of said horizontal rod-shaped member to accommodate garments having various widths, said clips being adapted to receive and retain the turned over portions of said garments.
