My invention relates to a trousers hanger, and more particularly a hanger for culed trousers. The invention is especially useful in connection with hangers which support culTed trousers without clamping, to which use, however, the invention is not restricted.

The usual form of trousers hanger clamps the bottoms of both trouser legs between clamping members which are supportedv by resilient at-l tachment means along which a metal loop slides' to hold the members in clamping position. Such arrangements frequently become loosened, and it is a common experience to iind ones trousers on the closet floor. members together more positively, various pivoted elements have been constructed which separately engage or form a part of the attachment means. Where attempts have been made to suspend the trousers from elements inserted in the trouser cuffs, either the legs of the trousers have been separated by the suspending apparatus or additional clamping means has been applied. In the first case, it requires but slight movement or but a slight pull to displace the cuff of one trouser leg from the element inserted therein. In the second case, the expense and uncertainty of the clamping apparatus is added to that of the hanger.

I have now found that a pair of trousers may be safely suspended from the pockets formed by the outer portions of the respective culs by means of a specially constructed trousers hanger,

The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a trousers hanger constructed according to the invention, a pair of trousers being shown in broken outline suspended from the hanger.

Figure 2 is a side elevation of the hanger illustrated in Figure 1, shown partly in section on the line II-II of Figure 3.

Figure 3 is a plan View of the same hanger seen partly in section on the line III-III of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a view of the same hanger as seen from beneath in Figure 2, and

Figure 5 is a fragmental section of the hanger taken on the line V-V of Figure 2.

In the embodiment of the invention which is illustrated in the drawings, there is shown a pair of supports or insert members I0, IIJ, one of which may be inserted into the pocket formed by the cul of one trouser leg, and the other of which 2 may be inserted into the pocket formed by the cuii` of the other trouser leg. The insert members I0, Ill are held in generally parallel relation to each other by attachment means. In the illustrated embodiment, the attachment means is shown as a U-shaped holder I I, the ends of which are fixed to the respective insert'mernbers Ii), IIJ which it resiliently sustains adjacent one another. A hook I2 is conveniently swiveled at the bottom of the U of the holder I I and serves to support the hanger and the trousers therein from a suitable fixed member. l v

As here shownyeach insert member I0 is formed of two like coplanar parts I3, I3, separated from one another and each joined, as by a rivet I4, to a connecting angle I5. This permits the insert member to enter the trouser cuff without interference by the usual tacking stitches which hold the culi to the trouser leg midway on each side. A substantial length of the bottom'edge of each part I3 is in contact with the connecting angle I5. The parts I3, I3 are, therefore, prevented from turning about the respective rivetsV I4 which join them to the connecting angles I5. The aggregate length of each insert member I0, that is to say the 4length of its two coplanar parts I3 and YI3 together with the distance by which the connecting angle I5 spaces the parts, is equal to the inside lengthof the pockets formed on each side of the trouser leg bythe cui thereon.

The end of each leg of the U-shaped holder II is riveted to a connecting angle I5 halfway between th'e two coplanar parts I3, I 3 which are joined thereto. It is preferred to rivet the ends of the holder legs, as by rivets I6, to the insides of the respective connecting angles I5, l5, as best seen in Figure 5. The U-shaped holder 1s thus fastened adjacent the mid-bottoms of the insert members. By so positioning the holder legs and the connecting angles that they are riveted together, with the squared ends of the legs flush with an adjacent flange of the angle, turning of the holder with respect to each angle is prevented. Furthermore, the attachment means or holder is outwardly offset from the outer faces of the insert members I0, I0 to permit their unobstructed entrance into the pockets adjacent the outer portions of the respective cuis. By bending each leg of the U-shaped holder II sharply outwardly over the parallel ange of the angle to which it is riveted, suitable resilient bowing of the holder is effected, the holder is spaced away from the trouser cuff and does not interfere with insertion of the insert member I0 therein, and

Acontact between the bend and the angle flange may provide additional stability of the connection. The hook I2 which supports the hanger and the trousers held thereby is necked at its straight end, is inserted through a hole at the bottom of the U (the top in supporting position) of the holder I I, and is held therein by upsetting its end inside of the U. The shoulder formed on the hook by the necking operation bears upon the outside of the U and prevents the hook from moving into the U. Thus the hook may be turned with respect to the U-shaped holder to support the hanger in convenient position. Obviously the hook I2 may be otherwise attached to the U- shaped holder I I.

Use of the trousers hanger to suspend-aA pair of trousers from the pockets formed by the outer portions of their respective cuis will be apparent from the description of the apparatus already given. The ends of the U-shaped holder II are separated against the resiliency ofthe holder, and

Vthe bottoms of the trousers are moved together between the insert members I until the cuffs are positioned beyond the innermost surfaces of the members, The trouser legs are then pulled away from the U-shaped holder II, thereby causing the insert members to enter the pockets formed by the cuis of the trouser legs, until their inner surfaces come in contact with the bottom of the outsidehalf of each trouser cuff. The two juxtaposed trouser legs and their `inner cuff portions are thus disposed between the opposed inner faces The hanger .carrying the pair of trousers is then lifted and the hook I2 is positioned over a rod or other stationary member to support the inverted trousers in the usual manner. It is to be noted that the resilien- ,cy of the U-shaped holder I I causes the inside of the cuffs of the two trouser legs to bear upon each other with gentle contact. This is in no sense a clamping action, but serves merely to hold the two trouser legs in proper position.

It is, of course, possible to add clamping means to the apparatus already described, but such. ad-

dition is not necessary and a Vpairof trouserswill be safely suspended from the pockets formed by the outer portions of their respective cuis by .means ,of a hanger formed in accordance with the invention.

The form of the invention here described and a illustrated is presented merely as an example of how the invention may be applied. Other forms and embodiments of the invention, differing in .4 detail from the particular form here illustrated but coming within the proper scope of the appended claims, will of course suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

I claim:

1. A hangerl for cuffed trousers comprising a pair of flat insert members suitably dimensioned to enter the cuffs on the trouser legs, and an inverted U-shaped holder connecting them togeth- .er and extending upward from points of attachment at the lower portions of said insert members intermediate their ends and holding them in generally parallel relation for embracing between their opposed inner faces the two juxtaposed trouser legs and their inner cuff portions, said holder being outwardly offset and spaced from the outer faces of said insert members.

2. A hanger for cuffed trousers comprising a pair of fiat insert members suitably dimensioned to enter the cuffs on the trouser legs, and an inverted U-shaped strap connecting them together and extending from a point of attachment at the lower, intermediate portion of one of said insert members to a point of attachment at the lower, intermediate portion of the other of said insert members and holding them face to face in gener- .ally parallel relation, said strap being outwardly offset at each vof its ends and spaced from the outer face of the respective insert members.

3. A hanger for cufed trousers comprising a pair of flat insert memberssuitably dimensioned to enter the cuffs on the trouser legs,.and a bowed, resilient U-shaped holder connecting them together and extending from a, point of attachment at the lower, intermediate portion Yof one of said insert members to a .point of attachment at the lower, intermediate portion of the other of said insert members and resiliently holding them face to face in generally parallel relation, said holder being outwardly oiset at each end and spaced from the outer face o the respective insert members.
